Chambers: We'll Be Seen as a Scalp in League One
Tuesday, 16th Apr 2019 13:51

Town skipper Luke Chambers says the Blues will be among the favourites to be promoted from League One next season and as a result will be viewed as a scalp by other clubs.

“There is a great group of players here, a lot of good young ones as well and the challenge for everyone here is to get straight back up,” Chambers, who picked up the Player of the Year award on Saturday, told the club site.

“We will start the season as one of the favourites to get promoted. We will be seen as a scalp. That will bring pressure because we will have to deliver. That’s where the mentality of a footballer comes in. Can you deal with that?

“It’s important when you are a player that you learn from every experience. I’ve been around in the game a long time but this season has been a learning curve for me.

“It will be the same for the other players, especially the young ones. They will be better for the experience in the long run.”

Bookies SkyBet have already priced the Blues at 7-1 to become League One champions next season.

True that by league1 standards we are a big name, but when august comes around there will be no aura about us and we wont strike fear into anyone. We are there because we deserve to be. A few weeks ago I saw Accrington run Sunderland ragged at the stadium of light. So along the way there will be defeats to the likes of Rochdale or Shrewsbury or Fleetwood etc. We need to earn the right to consider ourselves a cut above the rest but Its going to be very tough. We are certainly nowhere near good enough to arrogantly assume that its going to be a procession.Strangely though im looking forward to it more than any of the previous 7or8 seasons. A trip into the unknown. Hoping we don't sacrifice league form in order to have a good run in the checkatrade !

Naa..... meaning that Ipswich is still regarded as a “big club” with a “big stadium” in comparative terms .

Bookies said we would go down this year and 20 put of 30 BBC pundits said we would go down.

Let's hope the bookies are right again.

2 good goal scorers and we are in with a very good shout next season

Well I'm very sorry but don't see it. We are talking about playing a team of kids against seasoned league one players. We will finish around mid table. We've also been on the slide for years, so I very much doubt we will be seen as a big draw in a League One.

If we keep the majority of our squad and players get back to full fitness I Can see us being a force in league 1 but not maybe champions. As a lot of sides realise (aka Sunderland) it isn't an Easy league but with the right mentality and supposing they get the ticket prices right a good crowd we should be OK. Let's not get defeatest mentality before a ball is kicked. COYB

Whether we go straight back up will be down AGAIN to the owner and resources he gives the manager the same as the past ten seasons!!! Same budget as burton Albion last season that's why we're going the same way. He failed to invest when top of the league and if he fails to invest with the very very promising youngsters and pros like judge then more fool him AND the idiots on here who stick up for him even now after taking us down!

Bookmakers generally get things right 7/1 makes us play off contenders at best. My fear is that we will become a scalp too often, you can't take a team that has only won a handful of games in 18 months and suddenly make them world beaters

7/1 is flattering us.. We are shocking to say the least. Where is this good news we are supposed to be getting. I'm the biggest fan of this club and always will be, but we half been lightweight for ages!! I'm expecting League 2 before long.

Mid table at best, anything else people are living in cuckoo land.

Evans is not going to spend 3-4 million on two strikers it is just not going to happen

It will be Jackson and sears up front with maybe a u23 and one other

That is not going to blast us out of league one

Portsmouth would destroy us and they are not even in the auto promotion places.

We need players in to supplement what we have as what we have will not be good enough. I don't mean someone who isn't good enough for Newcastle we have plenty of our own potential what we need is current ability to nurture the potential.

Mark my words if the season starts rubbish for us some of the worse times under PH and MM will seem like a positive atmosphere.

Expectation is a very hard belief to manage

If we sort out the problem in central defence and the supposed protection from a deep midfielder coupled with getting a goal scorer(still think Freddie with a big man beside him would get loads) then we can do something next season, I just cannot see our seasoned pros in the central defence and holding midfield positions coping with what is the helter skelter of div1

Here we go again blaming Chambers, can't see how a defender can be responsible for our abysmal goal scoring record.

Does anybody on here feel any positivity for next season? I'm not thinking we'll walk it but personally feel we will be well up there next season. Our performances this season have at times deserved more, and against some of the stronger championship teams. A fully fit squad will be massive for us. I agree that a decent striker would help but that said, I also think Freddie, Lankester, and Jackson will be decent in lge1. It's important that we stick together and back whoever we have at the start of the season. Patience may be key, especially with a young squad.

Of course he's right - but it's really a glimpse of the bleedin' obvious!

But, if we've got anything about us, we should be saying ‘Yep, bring it on', and be ready to fight tooth and nail to beat whoever and whenever. Unless we face up to the undoubted challenges that await without fear and with max determination, then we start on the back foot. Anyone who heard Ray Crawford on Radio Suffolk yesterday morning will understand his key point about players' needing to step up to the plate and give 110%. Something he implied might not have been the case on some occasions this season. Beat too easily, not done enough to fight back etc. Unfair criticism? Perhaps not. So in making his latest statement, Luke knows what he and other seniors need to do.

thank goodness there are some realists on here. IT WONT BE A WALK IN THE PARK. Our youngsters will be up against hardened pros still, We need to be firing on all cylinders from day one. If we dont come straight back we really will be in deep poo, though and that is the serious worry that i have. next season could be the death of the club.Gates may hold up next season if we are doing well but will dive to new depths if we fail.

i dont know how much of league 1 people on here watch,i always watch quest every weekend highlights and it will be a battle next year no doubt about it ,yes us Sunderland Portsmouth are the 3 scalps so to speak but that means nowt unless we are ready for the slog that awaits, lincoln may have momentum like luton did from a promotion, and obviously bolton charlton and maybe Rotherham as well,we certainly need to buy that proven goalscorer we no longer have,as feel freddie may take a while to get back from this injury, funnily enough did anyone see luke hyam crack one in at fleetwood a couple of weeks back?....no i thought not :) it could be fun next year

The tradition of the club will make us a big "draw". However the quality of Chambers defending will make the league a challenge. Unless we can get another experienced defender to help him or find a striker to score more than we concede

Reality is that in the main, our youngsters have still to step up - not too much evidence of the one's that have had the chance to do so - as yet .... !!

Excuses cannot keep being made for these lads, plenty of youngsters are doing their bit, and more, elsewhere so let's not be too delusional that the youngsters will be the answer to all our prayers.

Far from it will be the reality I suspect, but hope otherwise.

Seems as if he may well be right ..... !!!

It's incredible how the predjudice blinkers people into reading what they want to read! Did anyone actually read Evans "apology"? He quite clearly states that if there are areas that need improvement that we have no upcoming talent to fill these roles then he will invest, but will not buy or loan players that stand to block the progress of our own. Is this not exactly what most have been screaming for? Years of loan after loan player coming and going, nurturing other clubs talent to watch them grow and move on. Lambert is being instrumental in developing us as both ITFC the Team, and ITFC the Club. Where has all the positivity gone? What happened to all the "lge1 over MM anyday" mentallity? All seems like very empty sentiment now the inevitable has been confirmed.

It should be remembered that the task of staying up, is less difficult than going up.

League 1 is tough in a different way to the Championship - some of our youngsters will need to grow a pair for sure.

Mark my words - but forward we roll.
