Lambert: Kayden Let Everybody Down
Tuesday, 26th Jan 2021 23:28

Boss Paul Lambert slammed striker Kayden Jackson for letting everybody down, including himself and his team-mates, after being sent off in the 10th minute of the Blues’ 1-0 home defeat to Sunderland.

Jackson was dismissed for catching Black Cats defender Bailey Wright with a boot halfway up his shin.

“Horrendous, horrendous, if I was Sunderland I’d be angry as well,” Lambert said. “He’s let everybody down, let his team-mates down, let himself down.

“I've not really seen it from the Sky angle, but I’ve seen it from my own angle and it was terrible. He'll know himself exactly what it means."

Reflecting on the battling display put in by his other 10 starters and his subs, he added: “Brilliant, really good. Fight, everything was there, there was nothing in the game but when you go down to 10 men it becomes harder. We were competitive but we lost. There’s a way to lose, as I’ve always said.”

Asked whether he thought of making a change to bring on a striker at half-time, Aaron Drinan having eventually been introduced on 55, he said: "The plan was to go in at half-time still 0-0, hopefully, but that never happened. You've got to stay in the game for as long as you can and think when it’s the time to try it, and that’s what happened.

“I think we made really good substitutions. The guys, they gave me everything, I can't ask for any more. There's no way on this earth you can ask for any more.”

With the Blues now down to 10th having won just three of their last 10 and losing six of their last seven at home, Lambert was quizzed on whether he fears for his job.

“I don’t worry about anything,” he insisted. “I don’t worry, I just get on with it and I guess that’s football.”

Does he understand why more and more fans are getting on his back? “Yes, but that’s life. When you do well, people think you’re great and when you don’t do great, people think you’re rubbish. But you do your best, that’s all you can do.”

Questioned on whether he believes he can turn things around with this evening's result having been a further blow, he reflected: “You have to win, as I said before, there aren’t too many managers who can walk away from their careers and say they’ve never been sacked,” he continued.

“That happens, look at Frank Lampard the other day. That's football, everybody knows you have to win."

Asked whether he would step down if he felt someone else could do a better job, he said: “[Owner] Marcus [Evans] has to say to me what's going on. I said to you last time, Marcus is the one that calls it, he’s the owner of the club.

“I don't get involved, I don't read anything, I don't get involved in anything. You don't know me that well, obviously. I get on with the job.”

Does he believe Evans still backs him? “I spoke to him yesterday, I certainly get on well with him. There's not a problem there, he’s been good. I think he knows. He's been good.”

But he knows he needs results: "Yes, no problem with that, none whatsoever. As I said before, it's up to Marcus what he does."

Jackson is now banned for three games meaning the Blues are even shorter on strikers with Oli Hawkins set to undergo knee surgery and James Norwood struggling with his hamstring.

Asked whether he’s going to up the search for another frontman - who would have to be a youngster aged under-21 due to the constraints of the salary cap - he said: "I don’t know, I really don't know.”

Sunderland manager Lee Johnson was pleased with the victory having beaten Shrewsbury by the same scoreline at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

“It’s a massive result and it completes back-to-back wins,” Johnson told the Newcastle Chronicle.

“It was a bit edgy, the sending off in the first half was pivotal, but they [Ipswich] did really well because they forced us into central, straight passes and we took the bait. It took us until half-time to settle the lads both emotionally and in terms of the team shape.

“We told them they needed more width, to feel the five zones across the pitch, and to manage the game a bit better.

“I’d have liked to have scored a second goal — if you don’t, it always makes it a little bit hairy in the last five or ten minutes because they can throw caution to the wind. But generally we saw the game out well with good possession, and it was another clean sheet.

“We have got quality, we have got that movement in the box now, the timing is good, and that has been consistent over the last five or six games.”

Play with one striker and get a man sent off...you reap what you sow.His stubborn insistence on playing a lone striker, which in 27 months has NEVER yielded anything, has shown itself to be what it is..a failed strategy. When Jackson went, we had no striker. What a bonehead...

Jackson is in no way good enough if this club want promotion. He thinks he's a PL player but his football brain is not there and he cannot control a football. Get rid of him and quickly he's a negative influence. Take Lambert and Evans with you

Let's get one thing straight here you cannot blame PL for KJ being sent off it was an horrendous tackle and he fully deserved the red card. What I'm angry about is the way PL has hung Jackson out to dry.He has fully used this excuse to cover up his ability as the manager and the way he has run this club into the ground. For some reason after every match he comes out with a ridiculous explanation to cover up his inadequate management. The owner needs to show some guts and get rid of him NOW.We are 10th in a terrible league and show not one sign of improving.Even with a few games in hand I doubt very much we will manage to creep into the top six under this appalling management. He is a disgrace to the club the supporters and owner.I am quickly loosing interest in my team after 60 odd years support. It really hurts me to say this but that's how I feel and I'm sure this resonates with many others.I've said enough.....

Let's just compare this with about 16 years ago: Pablo sent off, we're down to 10, we're in administration... we win 3-2. We had fight, togetherness, a mission. That's all been dissolved away under successive poor managerial appointments by an owner who really only seems to value the real estate price of Playford Road.

Martin587 same position and age as yourself. I may even have taught you at school. We have seen brilliant times at our club and where are we now, unbelievable! There seems little the fans can do at our club because the owner is either deaf or blind or both to what is going on. We feed off scraps, moments of delirium when we win by a single goal. My son-in -law is a director of Norwich City and his view of Lambert was very limited as it was his assistant who was behind their success. Lambert's record as a manager is dismal and now ME has given him this long contract. Cushty or as Mark Knopfler said 'Money for Nothing'. He's going nowhere when there's money sloshing in his pocket. Even the new manager at Chelsea has only an eighteen month contract. If PL was capable of flexible thinking I would have more respect for him but sticking to one up front is unforgivable.
I just wish he'd throw up his arms and look at everything differently and admit it doesn't work. If we're doing well with the juniors bring some into the team but not just in singles but in partnerships. Norwood used to score lots of goals because he had feeders and since he arrived here we have seen precious little. Kayden was at fault but the problem goes much deeper and lies at the feet of PL.

We can give Lambert all of the £2.5m we got from the Premier League fund supposed for keeping the club going.

Ipswich Town Nil is now a foregone conclusion. Two up front MUST happen. All of our successful teams had two up front. John Wark scored huge numbers of goals from midfield behind two strikers, I doubt if even he would have had many behind a lone striker. He fed of Johnson, Whymark, Mariner, Brazil and the chaos they caused defenders.

Norfolfbluey. Not unless you live in Southend.😃.I have been a season ticket holder all that time and I used to travel to most away games with my grandson but due to COVID this has stopped..I can tell you Southend Utd might be in Div 2 but there is more effort and determination than seen at Ipswich over these last two years. It's a crying shame to see the deterioration of our club.PL has to go otherwise I dread to think where we are heading. This once proud club is in dire straights and it's hurting us all.MARCUS please get rid of Lambert now to give us a fighting chance this season.🙏

Lambert is A problem, Evans is THE problem!

Yes, we need to get rid of Lambert but do people seriously think that in itself will cure this? Evans has been slowly killing the club since he got here, long before Lambert appeared. He will continue to do so long after Lambert has gone.

Take off the blinkers people and start placing the bulk of the blame where it belongs!

Evans out!

The bit that worries me is Shambert's quote 'He'll know himself exactly what it means'.
What does he mean by that? The auto 3 match ban or is there a more sinister meaning?
Or is it just me looking for something that isn't there?

Playing 1 upfront is no problem in Prem Lge where most players are international standard, but this is not the case lower down the chain where abilities are much more limited. While not defending Jackson for a terrible tackle would he have been so gung ho if he had a bit of support. Like others he has to put himself about a bit to get into the game and is 1 up front also part of the problem of so many striker injuries. How can Norwood look after his hamstring if, when he does come back, he is once again going to have to chase all over the place to try to make things happen. Aaron Drinan is a young lad still learning the striker role but with no partner to guide him through games.
2 up front will ease the striker strain and will also allow knockdowns to be picked up by attacking midfielders even if not in the same as class as Johnny Wark. As someone posted earlier Lambert must be the only person around here who thinks 1 up front is the answer.

He doesn't worry about getting sacked ,what do that tell you about this idiot ,and what co the players think of that , he isn't going to walk away from a five year contract , so Marcus do the only thing left and sack him NOW

And here's the reason we have declined past 13 years APATHY! Lambert doesn't worry about being sacked and this is the concern when you hire managers at the latter end of their career there isn't that fear. I work in a field as a key worker where I'm targeted and if I was to continue not meeting my target I'm out of work and does that worry me yes it does but it pushes me as most people are targeted in jobs in gives you that push to do well or exceed expectations and can also give you the kick up the arse when struggling. Lambert, Evans, certain senior players none of these guys are bothered or appeared bothered about the club or the shirt these days. Players come off against Swindon smiling laughing, certain players stay in the team week after week after poor performance after poor performance the manager stays in his job even during relegation form and not beating a top 8 side still and they all appear to get away with it. We all want what's best for our club and to see us improve but there is none. Again the apathy is what has made us this way and that unfortunately includes some fans. The owners not doing anything to correct our slide towards league two or even national league and DONT think for one minute it won't happen I never thought we'd end up in league one I definitely didn't think we'd finish 11th first season or be 10th possibly going 13th after Saturday either.

Regency blue I 100% agree with you and have been saying this for some time and i implor all fans to keep the pressure on evans to sell up even if and when he gets rid of lambert I know there aren't loads of multi millionaires out there wanting to buy div1 football clubs(how is he a multi millionaire by the way ?)but this man is killing our club (I actually think he is on the budgie payroll ) and I hate to think how this will end under his ownership

inghamspur added 12:26 - Jan 27
Don't think the sending off would have made one jot of difference. We are a poor side who do not create chances and can't stop other teams scoring, it's as simple as that. Most of that is down to team selection and then how we're set up to play, which is the manager's responsibility. Add to that the squad not being up to it and hence why we're losing every week. Therefore need a change of leadership, which has been the case for months. Keep losing and change must happen surely.

Lambert didn't appear at all well in his post match Sky interview, and will have claimed some sympathy from such - but simply he has to go, because as a tactician he is completely lost and nothing will change that.
As for Jackson, NO excuse, a complete let down to everyone - maybe he didn't like the we conditions ... !!
How else could one explain such an idiotic challenge within the first 10 minutes of a game ??
Should be fined a months wages for such irresponsible, couldn't care less behaviour... !!
