Bakay: European Super League Driven By Greed
Monday, 19th Apr 2021 18:32

New Blues co-owner Berke Bakay has hit out at the planned European Super League, which he says is driven by greed.

Istanbul-born Bakay, 42, is one of the Three Lions, along with Brett Johnson and Mark Detmer, who own five per cent of Gamechanger 20, the Blues’ new ownership, and who are also co-chairmen of USL side Phoenix Rising.

“I am being asked a lot about my thoughts on the creation of the Super League,” he wrote on Twitter. “This is a massive disservice to global fans of football and it is driven by greed.

“If it goes through as planned (which I do not believe it will) it will cause significant damage to the beautiful game.

“I think the founding members are underestimating the power of their own fan base of football and the power of UEFA and FIFA.

“Competition integrity is the cornerstone of football and eliminating consequences of relegation and promotion will be one of the worst outcomes for the fans and for football itself.

“Plus, who wants to see the same teams playing over and over again? Total nonsense! Football clubs belong to the fans and I am hopeful that the global fanbase will hold these clubs accountable!”

A super league for the super rich clubs, super rich owners and super rich fans. Says it all about the money driving this. I hope most of the fans boycott home games should this happen ...... which it probably won't because UEFA and FIFA will provide a counter offer which keeps the football pyramid intact but gives the big six more say and even more revenue from tv. ITFC may be in the football doldrums but give me a community club any day over the corporates.

With a fifth or sixth wave through Europe would be interesting to see how ESL would survive without a domestic competition.

Could be a very eggs in one basket situation should they be expelled from their domestic leagues or relegated.

Qualification for the Champions League is already grossly unfair, it should only be for the champions of all European countries. Having four entries from the richest leagues has led to this snowball of greed, while winners from poorer leagues have to qualify against also rans from England or Spain who happen to be among the richest clubs in the world. The 'big 6' have been playing with loaded dice for years and now they want to fix the whole format of the game in their favour to the detriment of what remains of free competition.
This has been coming for years and the only way to stop it is to boycott the teams involved in the new ESL.

IT'S UP TO THE FANS OF THESE CLUBS!!!

They have to have the courage to say I don't support this League by boycotting matches and not subscribing to TV channels that cover the matches.

THE FANS HAVE TO SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH....WE'LL NOT SUPPORT YOUR GREED BY SUBSCRIBING TO WATCH MEANINGLESS MATCHES. IF THE PLAYERS WERE ALSO BANNED FROM INTERNATIONAL TEAMS I DON'T THINK THE'D BE VERY HAPPY EITHER!!!

It is in the hands of those clubs fans. Dont turn up (after Covid), stop buying shirts and other merchandise, dont select their players for European Cup or internationals and leave them to reverberate around in their pathetic closed competition and wait and see how long it is before the players revolt..... to hell with them. Very happy that PSG and Bayern do not appear to be part of it.....

This is good to read and well put. However, let's not kid ourselves that if we were one of those 6 clubs our new investors would absolutely be part of the new super league. They are obliged to gain the maximum return on the investment of their backers. American owners want to marry the global appeal of football (as opposed to the comparatively limited global interest in their own sports) with the ability to control and exploit to the max the commercial potential of sport. In their world it is vital to take away the jeopardy that could affect their investment by creating a closed shop. A world where teams like Arsenal and Spurs can fail on the pitch and apart from the wrath of their fans there will be no major financial consequences.

If nothing else this situation will show who truly loves the game more than the money. Good to see Jurgen Klopp's strong words on the subject, let's see which other players and managers are prepared to stick their necks out. Players, managers and fans could kill this proposal instantly - if the game means more to them than extreme personal wealth of a few individuals.

Time for journalists to come to the fore, in every single press conference or interview from now on all top flight players and managers need to be challenged and a very clear message sent to the club owners that football is not their personal play-thing.

...eliminating consequences of relegation and promotion will be one of the worst outcomes for the fans and for football itself... Plus, who wants to see the same teams playing over and over again? - did he just describe the American MLS?

Joking aside, completely agree with the man. These clubs should be suspended for a season from all national and international competitions just for having the audacity to conspire something like this.

It looks to me that Arsenal and Tottenham have signed up to perhaps never win another game of football ever again.

Can't see how this new super league will survive. Boring, repetitive same teams matches, no relegation / promotion, players banned from World stages etc. Where will they get their feeder players from? OK, EFL / Prem but what happens in reverse when players want to transfer or frozen out of squads or sacked? Where then? Surely Lifetime player bans from FIFA/ UEFA & respective confederations limits their long term careers etc. Big gambles. Surely players see the pitfalls & pressure from fans & moral dilemma too. Only greedy players left will stay/ join. If it happens, it will be the downfall of all involved. Hundreds of millions of fans will make it so. Stay strong.
