Defoe Linked But Deal Unlikely
Wednesday, 26th May 2021 13:20

Town have been linked with veteran Rangers striker Jermain Defoe, however, it appears a move which is unlikely to happen.

Defoe joined Rangers on loan from Bournemouth for the second half of 2019/20 before signing on a free transfer last summer. He scored seven times in five starts - three in the league - and 15 sub appearances during 2020/21.

The 38-year-old is in talks with the Glasgow giants regarding a new deal but with Football Insider reporting that Town are trying to lure him to Portman Road.

Defoe’s name has been linked with the Blues on social media for a number of weeks and while we understand he has been discussed as a potential target, it’s not a deal which is likely to happen.

Town are looking to recruit players of a higher profile than is the norm at League One level but it seems likely that Defoe’s wage requirements would put him out of the running given the SCMP limitations the Blues are working within.

Defoe is reportedly on £30,000-a-week at Rangers although will have to take a pay cut if he wants to remain at Ibrox this summer.

The Londoner was with Charlton’s academy before joining West Ham where he made his senior breakthrough having spent time on loan at Bournemouth.

Spells with Tottenham (twice), Portsmouth, Toronto FC, Sunderland and back at Dean Court on a permanent basis followed as well as 57 England caps and 20 international goals.

Even if he only played 20mins he's likely to be top scorer for the season. Would I take Shearer, Lineker and Defoe ahead of NorwoodJackson and Drinan.....too buddy right I would !

Would score a lot of goals at league 1 level. Problem is wages but if we had 4 strikers and one was Defoe I would not be disappointed

Hi blues1 I know its called humour because at the moment it's a joke. On a serious note you don't sign a player to be a 20 minute man he's a NO for me but opinions are like Ar&*holes every bodies got one.

I hate the idea of signing “high profile” players at lower league clubs. It basically means a shirt sales marketing strategy but no long term plan…. Any relatively high profile player dropping to league one is in the November or December of their career and will only come for the money not the long term project.

All of these links mean nothing. Not long to wait now, once the new ceo is in place we'll see where we're at. Can't wait

@blues1
Are they the same people who said they wanted to sign Drogba at 43, or is it just other people posting here?

The more income the club gets then the more they can spend on wages and the best way of achieving that is to widen the fan base. Getting a top name in is a good way of getting this as long as it doesn't cause a schism in the dressing room. Drogba was attracted by factors other than wages so this is an avenue which should be explored.
38 isn't old, Wark was playing in the Championship when he was 40.

Hi Monkey Blue I'm from Woodthorpe but there's a few ITFC fans in Arnold then there's Kev from Ollerton Goes Home and way like us we normally do about 2500 miles a season.

So no one has noticed that our current strikers are unable to find the back of the net? I am quite sure that Jermaine Defoe is still a better finisher that Norwood and still twice as quick. He might even be able to control and pass better than Norwood. I suspect he will still be doing these things better than Norwood when he is 48! These are desperate times and short term desperate measures may be needed.

I wouldn't have been upset if we sold Norwood and Jackson but it's a backwards move to sign a 38 year old when people have been moaning Skuse and chambers are too old for a couple of years. Don't look to football fans for rational analysis and consistency of thought. It's head in the clouds and emotionally driven drivel. At the moment if Paul Cook signed Maradona and he's dead many on here would find reason to call it a genius move and hail his move away from live players and say it proved he didn't just like scousers.

Probably irrelevant to post on this topic as it's unlikely to happen but if you check out his stats, although not a guaranteed first team player, he tops the list.

No, the Scottish premier league isn't of the highest standard but easily on a par with the league we find ourselves in.

Yes he is 38 but unlike the older players we have released, he was/is a top class player.

I do understand that we should be building for the future and sending out the right messages but surely getting out of this division is the number one priority.

Defoe, despite his height, would stand head and shoulders above any strikers we currently have at the club and I'd love to see him here.

I guess we'll just have to wait to see the quality of the first signings to come in before we can assess the new owners intent.

I really don't know why people are moaning about the club taking on a 38 year old for one it's only paper talk and we will be connected to anyone and everyone this summer and two no one moaned when john Walk came back under Lyall and who was majorly responsible for getting us up. We do need a blend of experience and youth and deigns went back to Chelsea at a ripe old age. Just chill out people stop believing everything you see or hear this summer until it happens!
