Barnsley Linked With Downes
Saturday, 12th Jun 2021 16:05

Championship Barnsley are reported to be preparing an offer for Blues midfielder Flynn Downes.

The 22-year-old has been told he can find a new club this summer along with most of his team-mates.

Now, according to Football Insider, the Tykes are set to make a move for the former England U19 and U20 international.

Last summer, the Blues turned down two offers from Crystal Palace for Downes of £1.2 million and then £1.6 million with the Brentwood-born academy product subsequently handing in a transfer request.

Downes, who is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2022 with the club having an option for a further season, made 17 starts and eight sub appearances for Town in 2020/21 and in total has made 75 starts and 25 sub appearances for the club, scoring three times.

For those knocking Barnsley - Championship Play Offs, entertaining, forwards like Dike (loan) and one of the best managers in the Championship in Valerian Ismael. Just ask Benjamin Bloom. I would love to see their squad and manager at ITFC - ITFC will be in the Premiership very soon if Cook can do better.

It's very sad to see so many of our potentially good home grown youngsters not recognized by the new coaching team! I hope this decision will not come and haunt us in the future! Kieffer Moore, another discard has gone on to become a full Wales International!

Cook has lost the club at least £2m in the handling of Downes and Dozell.

Cook's out of his depth, and with money to spend he's a real liability.

I can't see him making past Christmas.

Surely it's a proven fact that all the players we have had a the Town had very little interest other than self interest during last few years, when asked to do extra training were they really incapable of doing extra which is a damming indictment of there self conditioning lazy mind lazy body, the only person trying at seasons end was Dobra, the only one I'd keep is KVY hoping he's now fit again

Betty blue. Do everyone a favour and did off and support some1 else. Mind you I use the word support in ur case very lightly. Cook only wants players who want to be here, so a player who put in a transfer request in january hardly fits that bill. And he hadnt sacked the whole squad. Hes told them they can find other clubs. So they have the choice. Do exactly that or stay and fight to prove they want to be here. And frankly I cannot see barnsley making a big enough offer to get him anyway. But instead of spouting ur negative rubbish, why not try getting behind the club.

Bettublue. How the hell has cook lost the club money on dozzell and Downes? For1, theres nothing to say that Downes is actually going to go. And if he does, we dont and maybe never will know how much he will go for. And the same with dozzell as despite people saying on twitter , the fee is £500,000, that's more conjecture. And we'll never k ow that fee neither. So just stop talking rubbish

blues1 - I am happy if what you say is correct about players can stay and fight if they want but as someone has pointed out, it is going to cost us money in the fact that if Dozzell/Downes want to move then QPR/Barnsley will offer less money and we will HAVE to accept as the players don't want to play for him having been told they can go- we all saw the results at back end of last season when players just didn't give a sh1t.
Should have just kept his big mouth shut and sold players if and when it came about.
Also you can't blame Downes for wanting to leave- if you were offered 4/5 your wage and you get to possibly play in best league in world what would you do- the club was sinking and he could see this but it may be different now we appear we are going to be going onwards and upwards

Timandkatieitfc. No. We won't have to accept less for them at all. If we have a price we want we dont have to accept any less . And no, I wouldnt blame Downes if he wanted to go somewhere to earn 4/5 times what hes on here. Something he definitely wont be doing if he goes to Barnsley tho. End of the day, like any other human being, hed want to earn more money. But theres always of going about it. And that's not putting in a transfer request bcse ur having a strop bcse the club turned down the derogatory offer palace put in for him. I'm sure had the right offer come in, hed have got his move.

The whole squad has failed and not been good enough so if the new owners are going to back Cook to get the players he wants then that's a good thing after all the current crop has achieved is relegation from the championship and 2 mid table finish in the 3rd tier so none of them are good enough

Let's actually remember that cook hadnt told any of the under contract players that they have to find another club. Just that they can do. If rather than take that statement at fa e value, you read between the lines, that's clearly a challenge to those players that if they wanna stay and prove there good enough, they can do that. Also, as usual, some of the reaction to this link is over the top. At the end of the day, it's exactly that. A link. At this stage means very little. Personally, even if theres any truth in it, I cannot see Downes agreeing a move there. That's just how I see it mind you.

Let's have a bit of a logic check here. Paul Hurst was an inexperienced manager - OK, he had done well at Shrewsbuty, but not much else. He had no budget (thank you ME) and bought badly, and essentially made certain that we would go down. He's done the same for Grimsby this season.

In contrast, Cook is a highly experienced, successful manager, and what's most important (given the troubles Mick McC, Hurst and Lambert all had) he has a budget to bring in better players.

So it's not really valid to compare Hurst's clear-the-decks spree with Cook's.

I believe that his telling them all they can go is, as others have noted, a challenge to raise their game and show some fight, knowing that they'll not get on the pitch, and may well be out of the door if they don't.

It will be sad to see him go but we have hardly torn up trees with him in either.

The main issue here though is money. A number of the younger players that we wanted ti get top dollar on were offered deals whilst we were still in the Championship and I know for a fact that a number signed for longer deals to capitalise their value on the condition that those contracts did not have a relegation clause in them.Three years in L1 on championship wages isnt sustainable under the new rules. Hence some of the better younger ones will have to be sacrificed to enable the rebuilding within the rules.

That is why a more than average number of players have been told that if they reach valuation, they are free to move on. PC has not told everybody they can go, he has suggested they may move if their value is met. That is very different, and if you think about the interviews that the management team have given, all of them reference the % of income and salary restrictions.

Sometimes people dont think things through before they type on here, its a much bigger picture.....

Don't believe some of you , he is hardly Pele , he,s one year older than Phil Foden , same age as Mason Mount , year younger than Marcus Rashford and a year younger than Gascogne was at Italia 90 18 months younger than Jack Grealish , he,s playing 3rd division football Only Ipswich fans can believe their youth are world beating when in fact hardly set the division alight

Bazza8564. Yes, they may have signed deals without a?relegation clause in them, but that was bcse their wages were a lot less than others anyway. Thus nothing to do with the wage situation now if they go or not. But yes, as u say some may have to move on and that would clearly also help. Tho I suspect those coningvin will be earning more than the youngsters who leave are. And as u also say, he hadnt literally said they can go. Ur spot on that it's a challenge to them to prove they're good enough to be here.

What's changed? Beginning of last season Downes worth at least £1.5m.

After Cook opens his big mouth, lucky to get £500K.

Cook has an even worse record than Lambert, Hurst or even Duncan. So keep bigging him up keyboard warriors.

Too many dissing Barnsley. They were Championship playoffs so thats a million miles ahead of us. Why wouldn't Downes want to go to a young ambitious club. If Cook doesn't want his he should move on. He will p,at Championship football for sure. Cook has to recruit quickly and effectively and has to start well. This new structure would put up with more than a couple of months outside the top six. I've read their credentials and they are ruthless winners which is fantastic news for the fans. Cook on the other hand may have a twitchy bum

Betty blue. There u go again. Still spouting rubbish. How the hell do u know what the club are asking for Downes? Certainly will become than £500,000. But then, u clearly know nothing about football. The only person who would have changed whatcdownes is or was worth, is Downes. Although his lricexactually would have dropped now anyway as he has less time left on his contract. But as he wasnt caluesxat £1.5 m last season anyway. That's what the club rejected. So why dont you stop opening ur big mouth and allowing so muchvteipe to come out of it. Only one keyboard warrior on here. You've clearly never been to a game in ur life. Cook has a worse record than Lambert who's had 4 succesive relegations, hurst who's had 2 in his last 3 jobs, whereas cooks had 3 promotions as champions at all 3 clubs hes managed. And before you say ur talking about here you need to remember we are still unbeaten at home under him. At a time when the so called professional players in our squad decided to down tools.

My opinion: I like what is happening at PR.
These players had a perfect opportunity to impress the new manager and the new owners but gave nothing, no spirit no fight and no desperation to get into the Play offs. Paul Cook reminded them game after game but still tepid uninspired performances.
All the players remaining have been in a losing culture at ITFC and they all need a big shake up.
Ashton has said that there ARE players at the club who will still be here in August, I see those as Norwood, Nolan, Vincent-Young, Dobra, Woolfenden, El Mizouni, (possibly Donacian, Kenlock, Bishop and Nsiala)
Meaning a starting x1 could be:
New, V-Y, New, Woolfenden, New, Nolan, Burns, Evans, Dobra, Bishop, Norwood

Vanisleblue. Agree with much of what ur saying. Ur exactly right with ur view of the players this last season since cooks arrival. Dont think th team you've posted tho, will be anywhere near the starting line up come the start of the season. Will be more than 5 new players coming into the club.

Not sure he actually does too much and seems to have a temper too. Shows glimpses that he can be a better player if developed properly, but if he doesn't want to be here then I don't think I'll lose sleep if he goes

Vanisleblue - i do hope nolan and norwood are not in the starting line up. They should be sold before Downes.

Blues1 - i kind of get your point about Cooks history, but to me he turned a team on the cusp of play-offs to a mid table team. Yes we might be unbeaten at home, but 4 wins from 16, no goals in 6.5 matches, rubbishing the players does not sit well with me. He should of kept his gob shut until the end of season. Another thing that concerned me was after winning the three games prior to his appointment, there was no new manager bounce.

His backroom appointments are questionable.

I hope he does well but at the moment he has the team in relegation form. I will give him 3 to 6 matches depending on the football he serves up . I should give him longer but his part in last seasons shenanigans (and the players are also culpable) were a major factor.

Now lets shake up the scouting staff and look further afield for players.
