Barnsley Linked With Downes
Saturday, 12th Jun 2021 16:05

Championship Barnsley are reported to be preparing an offer for Blues midfielder Flynn Downes.

The 22-year-old has been told he can find a new club this summer along with most of his team-mates.

Now, according to Football Insider, the Tykes are set to make a move for the former England U19 and U20 international.

Last summer, the Blues turned down two offers from Crystal Palace for Downes of £1.2 million and then £1.6 million with the Brentwood-born academy product subsequently handing in a transfer request.

Downes, who is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2022 with the club having an option for a further season, made 17 starts and eight sub appearances for Town in 2020/21 and in total has made 75 starts and 25 sub appearances for the club, scoring three times.

Can we really afford to let the 'future England capt' go?! I never rated him as highly as others, but his absence was definitely felt last season as bog standard opposition waltzed through our midfield. At the very least he'd have made a token gesture to put a foot in. I'd sooner he stayed !

Emphasis here on "Barnsley are preparing an offer....."
He hasn't agreed to go. Cook hasn't agreed to sell him.
I can't see Downes swapping Town for Barnsley and I hope Cook's "You can go" speech will give him the impetus to prove himself here still.
With some decent midfielders around him, like Evans & maybe Crooks, Downey could shine here still.

Downes wants to go. He's a saleable asset. Could be good for all parties.

Moggasnotebook I could give you ten pluses for that. So many Town players just clearly don't have the belief in themselves or aren't up for a challenge.

If he handed in a transfer request then it's clear he doesn't want to be here and I for one don't want him at our club. Let him go and let us recruit players that do want to be at our club and will give their all on the pitch for ITFC!

If the club let Downes go with the impetuous of a new owner and new players coming in and a newish manager with new ideas I think it will be a mistake.

@ stopmoaning- you referring to the same Barnsley that have just made championship play offs, a real drop from where he is now.
Keep him he's a great player at this level and would be good in championship.
Not saying get rid of Cooke like some are on here but I think it's REALLY pi55 poor of him to say everyone can go- how many would be happy if KVY were to be sold for instance.
I'm all for getting rid of a lot of the players but IMO KVY/Norwood/woolfenden/Downes/Bishop/Dobra should stay with some quality added

I think Downes soured his relationship when he wanted to leave, and that mutual trust hasn't been rebuilt. Downes is probably still a bitter and PC doesn't like his attitude, so they are on a collision course. [All supposition, I admit.] Although I will be sad to see yet another Academy product go missing, it's probably the best result for both parties.

Isn't the “if you can find a club you can go” just part of the rebuild strategy and keeping within the 60% revenue rule. Presumably any transfer fees received would go towards the revenue figure which means 60% of it will be available to pay wages for players who on the whole will be brought in on free transfers.

Nobody that is decent will be allowed to go for silly money. I expect PC would be happy to keep the likes of Downes, Bishop, Woolfenden but if they can command a decent transfer fee he will sacrifice them to get a good player in on a free.

I think what's happened to Christian Eriksen tonight should put things into perspective.

personally i was sick of the whole ITFC scene ,the owner, the manager. the squad, i d got to the point where i really didnt care if all the players went, and im surprised so many on here still want to hang on to many of that squad. So i'm not bothered by any players moved on ,with exception of Dobra and those youngsters who were denied the chance to prove themselves. Good luck Flynn if you do go all the same .

Even if we sign another 8 or 9 players, it still means a dozen or so of last years squad will remain. PC was just letting the players know he would'nt stand for slackers at the club. It's up to the players to step up to the plate. We can see already those who were not willing to do so.

I'd personally prefer to hold onto Downes unless we can get very good money for him which I suspect we wouldn't get right now.

I worry that if we sell him, we won't be able to get another player with his ability and Championship experience.

Good riddance. I'll drive him if he likes.

I understand what you are saying moggas but it really depends on the tone of the words from Paul Cook to the players. I think it has proven to be completely de-motivating and he will need to replace all of the players. If he gets it wrong his job is on the line.

From what I saw last season....nobody had any fight or desire. The whole team was an absolute disgrace and deserve to be released/sold. We move on from that dross, onwards and upwards, i certainly won't lose any sleep over any of them leaving!!

Linkboy13 added 21:52 - Jun 12
Must not be allowed to leave until a replacement is brought in. Has not actually said he wants to go there and will probably play a waiting game hoping for a move closer to home.

No matter how far we have sunk, surely it's bizarre to tell ALL of the players that they are not good enough. We've been poor but we did finish top half, right?

Surely every team at this level has at least a couple of good players and PC is a brave man if he attempts to get rid of every one of them, sign loads more, and expect ALL of them to be better?

I remember Paul Hurst trying something similar and that didn't turn out awfully well. At least there is money to spend this time which gives PC a better chance but it's a dangerous game. Personally I would want to keep a few (Downes, Woolf, Andre, Bish and Dobs spring to mind)

NITFC,
Why would you keep those players, over the last two seasons they have been terrible, no room for sentiment, move on!

It's always good to have a strategy but it's even wiser to make exceptions to it. I just hope that Cook really knows what he is doing in this fire sale. I'll judge him come Christmas.

Karlosfandangal added 22:42 - Jun 12
To all those who think Cook's management style is not good.

I think he has given them time about 15 games to prove they could step up to the mark. So what will be different next season, they will still have the same mind set.

I think of the matches I saw with Cook in charge (6) only Norwood, Dobra and KVY seem to give it a go

Cadiar added 23:47 - Jun 12
Agree with Moggasnotebook, the only player to come out and say he wants to fight for his place is Dobra. Downes had his head turned by Palace & really who can blame him. I would like to see him stay along with KVY, Wolfie & Idris el M who could become an xlent player.
Warkie doesn't rate Norwood so thats good enough for me, don't see Bishop being as good as he thinks he is and really there's not an abundance of talent left.

Dog added 01:24 - Jun 13
I would rather keep Downes, Woolfenden, Dobra and get rid of Cook.

And cook can take his kitman/first team coach with him.

Dreadful decision by manager and owners if this is allowed to happen. More bristol city, accrington, portsmouth, wigan or oxford rejects on their way presumably
