Downes Linked With Posh
Wednesday, 30th Jun 2021 08:19

Peterborough United are reported to be showing interest in Blues midfielder Flynn Downes.

According to the EADT, Championship new boys Posh have the 22-year-old well up their list of summer targets, having already made ex-Town keeper Dai Cornell their first signing of the close season.

It’s expected that they will face competition for the Brentford-born Town academy product with Barnsley previously having shown interest, although with manager Valerian Ismael later departing for West Brom.

Downes was the subject of a number of bids from Crystal Palace last summer, the highest £1.6 million, and the former England U19 international subsequently handed in a transfer request.

It’s understood Downes remains keen to move on to a club in a higher division and was among the many players told he could find a new club by manager Paul Cook at the end of 2020/21.

As revealed a week ago, Downes was listed among those starting pre-season training with the U23s rather than with the first team.

Meanwhile, former Blues striker Jack Marriott, 26, is expected to return to Posh in the next few days with his Derby County contract up.

The next few days will tell us if he is buying into our ambitions. If not, no need to slate him, he just doesn't want to be aiming for the same target with ITFC. He might shine elsewhere, but I totally trust Ashton to do great business if he does go. If not, I'll cheer him on in a blue shirt, with no grudge held.

As long as we get a good price for him...

Best of luck Flynn. I believe this is a player we should have definitely kept hold of. Hes certainly a talented footballer and under the right coaching can develop on to the next level, even perhaps premier league standard.

Good luck. Red card on debut?

Some of the comments on here are ridiculous. If he had been told he was wanted then it's still no reason for the lad to not want to play at a higher level. It's a short career. I doubt Barnsley is his dream move but they have plenty of money and made a good fist of last season. Perhaps who becomes manager might make a difference but also perhaps West Brom might now be interested? A football career is a short one so I won't criticise him for wanting to make the most of it professionally and financially. I can't blame any player for wanting to better himself especially given he's done two seasons at this level.

Seriously why would he go to that little club with what's going on here at the moment?

Time for a fresh start, methinks, although when he was a teenager I thought he would do well here.
However, one young player who is not getting a mention is Corrie Ndaba. Very impressed with what I saw of him before he went off on loan to Scotland last season. He is young, big and strong, and a left footed defender, which is always a big plus. Could there be a bonus for us here, unless I have missed something.

TimmyH…. Barnsley have considerably more money than we have. Also we wouldn't be the first club to splash loads of cash and it not work. It wouldn't be the first time we've done that and it not worked. You have to look at it without our town tinted glasses on. What if he stayed, hardly played and we still didn't get promotion?

Monkey blue I think you will find Timmy h is referring to the story which says posh! Also how much money have Barnsley got and how much money has Itfc got? Do you know the figures?

Perosnally, i would like to keep Downes, but if he no longer wants to be here and if Peterborough are interested then we should make sure we get top dollar - just like they did when they sold us Taylor and Edwards.

Yep, as some have already mentioned, if Cook doesnt want him and Downes wants to try at a higher level then best all round to sell him on.

I like Flynn and think hes a decent enough player for league one/championship. Had his head turned last season and neither he nor the club dealt with it in the right way. It really wasnt a good environment for any (young) player to flourish

All the best to Flynn if he does move on

Good, I'll give him a lift if he likes. Another overrated nobody from last years dreadful squad. I'd laugh if he gets relegated with them while we go up.

DissBoyIttc. As the figure £40m has been bandied about and we can't spend that on players right now even if we wanted to let's just say that's the level we are operating at for be sake of argument. Barnsley are owned by people with a net worth off around £10billion.it's their money. Do the maths. Barnsley Finished 5th in the championship. The fact you or me would stay with Town no matter what is irrelevant, firstly because we are town fans and secondly we are never going to be tested in that scenario.

I'm a mechanic at Ford (a brand I really like) but if vauxhall headhunted me with a decent pay rise u can guarantee I'd be handing in that notice. In the real world flynn has to do what's right for him. I doubt Barnsley or posh are his dream move, but he will know if he performs for them then a move to West ham, Palace or Newcastle etc could be on the cards. Its a short career he needs to move, and he'll go with my best wishes

a major reason why the team was poor last season was because the mid field was made up of players like Dozzell and Downes who struggled to compete in League 1.

His not a paul cook type of player. He was never as good when he thought the grass was greener. Trot on downes next !!!!!

Just move him on. He doesn't want to be here and other clubs know it. If we get anywhere near £1m we've done good business. He was one of the best of a bad bunch last year but didn't exactly shine.

Don't carry players that aren't 100% committed to the cause.

Has not been the same player since the Palace offer, injuries also contributed to a poor last season. I will be sorry to see him leave. Bottom line the manager said he can leave and it is difficult to stay motivated when you are told that. I am sure Cook is actively looking for a replacement so he might end up being a fringe player if he stayed - Cook is bound to prefer his new signings so he may only get a chance if there are injuries or a drastic drop in form.

I would have preferred a more nuanced approach from Paul Cook in relation to last year's squad - yes many had to go but perhaps he wielded the axe a little indiscriminately. Only time will tell!

I suppose I might wish to leave if I was stopped from joining a Premier league club when in league 1 under the uninspiring leadership of Paul lambert. Then the new manager comes in and put you in the reserves when your the best midfielder at the club. This could have been handled much better from the outset. Wish him well would have liked to see him stay

Monkey blue your quote said Barnsley have more money to spend, not that they could spend more because they were in a higher division! I have done the maths using your figures for Barnsley owners having a net worth of 10bil well the owners of Ipswich have a net worth of 14bil I believe!

I think Downes would be better staying, getting a better season under his belt and (hopefully) getting promoted with us rather than going to Posh who could get relegated next season. Cmon Flynn, show us you want to stay and fight for your place!

I wonder how Flynn sees it?
He is the youngest player to captain the senior side.
I appreciate that there are many ways to see this.

He'll be fine at Posh, one more over inflated ego to add to the list already at their club. The fact that Dobra was the only player that came out publicly to declare his willingness to fight for his place speaks volumes and confirms everything that's been reported about the state our club was in. Bye bye Flynn, we won't be seeing you back at PR for some time as Posh and Town will switch leagues next season!

Jack Marriott would be a fantastic signing . Town could do worse than having a punt on him
