Warnock Considering Coulson Swap Deal
Friday, 16th Jul 2021 09:32

Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock says he is looking at doing swap deals for players such as Blues target Hayden Coulson.

The 23-year-old is surplus to requirements at the Riverside with Town keen to bring him to Portman Road, while Sunderland have more recently been linked.

Asked about players moving on, specifically Coulson, Chuba Akpom and Lewis Wing, Warnock told the Sunderland Echo that he is looking at potential swaps as he tries to add to his squad.

“I’m more concerned with players, you talk about Coulson and Wingy, it’s players I want,” he said.

“I’m trying to do more with swapping players than I am with letting players go, because we just haven’t got enough bodies at the moment.”

Boro are one of the many Championship clubs to have been linked with wantaway Blues midfielder Flynn Downes, although there has been no confirmation of their interest.

Quizzed on where he is looking to strengthen, Warnock said: “I think everybody knows I’m looking for strikers but it’s amazing what crops up later on.

“We’ve got a couple in the pipeline that we’d like to if we could agree with the clubs, we are a little bit away from agreeing at the moment. Things can change.

“I’m glad I’ve got four in but you’ve seen how thin we are really so it’s just a matter of being patient and trying to get the ones you want in.”

Gateshead-born Coulson came through the ranks at Boro before spending time out on loan at St Mirren and Cambridge United, both in 2018/19.

Coulson, who also plays wide on the left, broke into the Teessiders’ first team at the start of 2019/20 and has now gone on to make 28 starts and 21 sub appearances, scoring once.

He is contracted to Boro until 2023, however, with his involvement having been limited last season he is expected to move on this summer.

Town have already signed one left-back this summer, Matt Penney, who joined after leaving Sheffield Wednesday, but with Stephen Ward having been released at the end of the season and Myles Kenlock among those told he can move on this summer, and currently training with the U23s, the addition of a second left-sided full-back has looked on the cards.

Makes sense. Would like to see us secure a dominant experienced centre back though, along the lines of the lad from Luton that sounded like a near miss. Also another prolific striker and wide man - I like the look of Jacobs if he's got over his injury problems. Those coupled with Crooks, Celina and maybe the young CB from Everton that's gone a bit quiet would be pretty awesome.

I personally think Jackson is championship player if he was a the right team with the right service.....Jackson for Coulson....lets try it!

We need to improve Defensively, so we really need a CB

This is like big boys Panini sticker swapping in the playground. You get to a point where you have a tonne of common swaps and will swap the whole pack of spares to get the remaining few you need.
Bit like ITFC at the moment.
Warnock wants a bunch of players, we have plenty to swap, we just need a few specials & shinys to finish our collection.

I don't know anything about Coulson so I'm not sure how valuable he is or potentially could be but I'd be reluctant to let Downes go for a straight swap.

I would think that if Warnock is suggesting he is wanting to play swapsies for players, Boro have no money to buy new players, might be wrong though

Jackson isn't a Championship player. Downes would be the obvious make weight here.

If Mike Ashton can get Warnock drunk enough maybe we can swap Jackson with Coulson. Let's face it tho, anyone willing to sign Jackson would have to be totally mullered.

Warnock wont be interested in Jackson.

Give them Downes and Jackson. Downes wants out and Jackson is hopeless

I'd let them have Norwood. I don't care if he scores goals, he has a history of drink driving and for me that's not acceptable. I recall GB booted players out for alcohol related incidents that didn't even involve putting other people's lives at risk by being behind the wheel of a car.

Davefromwatford.

Jackson is definitely good enough for the Championship.
Well that's what we tell Warnock

I'm not sure about a Warnock reject (he's a pretty good judge), but the swap suggestions made above sound pretty good to me!

Wily managers know we have players who for whatever reason have no future at this club, but that is no reason to just get rid
I know many of you will not agree (as he was a Hurst signing) that Jackson has goals in him (certainly in this league) if given anything that can be classed as service. Lump the ball to him and hope you get something out of it is not service !!!
With this in mind a swap for Coulson is not in the best interest getting a 23yo player with less than 30 appearances in english football (14 in L2)
If as swap for either if these would have to include a decent 'wad' of cash.

That said, if Cook is not going to play them...whatever the circumstances then they need to be moved on, however not cheaply just to get rid !!!

Jackson good enough for the championship??!! He's not good enough for league 1! If our guys can sell that deal they're instant club legends!

atty…. I take you approve of drink driving then? If have sacked Norwood unless there were any extenuating circumstances. It's not about football it's about respect for peoples lives and the image having a “hero” who drinks and drives presents, especially to kids. It's not like he was close to the limit on either occasion he was actually caught.

Jackson couldn't play Championship football he has decent pace but his touch and decision making are probably division 3. Any average defender would p,ady off his touch and simply Nick the ball. We'd have to give him away as no potential buyers

He's looking for a striker , guess that rules out Jackson then!
