Harris Tight-Lipped on Town Interest
Friday, 10th Dec 2021 22:32

Former Millwall and Cardiff boss Neil Harris has refused to comment on his interest in the Blues management vacancy. TWTD reported earlier today that the 44-year-old has applied for the job at Portman Road.

“I'd never talk about any individual club,” the one-time striker told talkSPORT2. “I've turned down jobs in the past and Championship jobs this year.

“For me, I had a great six years [at] Cardiff and Millwall — two fantastic clubs in different ways.

“I'm looking for a project to get back in. I really enjoyed my time managing in the Championship, [and had a] great experience at Millwall, always being the underdog.

“But I really enjoyed League One as well. League One is a great division, [there are] some really good teams there and some really good players. I had a great time getting out of that division with Millwall.

“What I would say is I'm ready to go again. I've enjoyed the break, had great family time but watched a helluva lot of football as well.

“I've been at various different clubs to watch them work in the Premier League, League One, Championship and League Two with Kenny Jackett [at Leyton Orient] to watch them work and watch how they recruit, watch how they prepare for games, watch them on the grass, watch them at the games on a Saturday as well to see how it all comes together and to see if there's anything you can add.

“Me personally, I'm ready to go again — refreshed, recharged, had a lot of reflection time and good to go.”

Speaking about what he knows of Town, Harris said: "It's a brilliant football club. [It’s a] great challenge for somebody to go in and hit the ground running.

“They've struggled for a little bit of momentum this year and consistency, but it's a playing squad and a football club that deserves to be right at the top of the division, at least at the league above and have aspirations of finally getting back to the Premier League.

“Ipswich is certainly a club that deserves to be in the league above and fighting to get in the Premier League.”

It doesn't matter who is linked with the job, Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland are bigger clubs than we are and attracted Darren Moore and Lee Johnson, if they had been suggested as our next manager then it would have been outrageous in most peoples eyes.
We are where we are, and until supporters get out the clouds of champ manager then we will continue to mediocre.
Harris was recruited by Cardiff who are also a bigger club than us and did fairly well for most of the time, so I see this guy as just about the best that we can attract.
By the way Millwall loved him and it wasn't long ball stuff either and he lives in Rayleigh in Essex and can always be seen watching the local non league stuff in the area.
Get real guys!

Warnock for me to the end of the season if he's up for it !! Then we can take our time making sure we get the right man in charge , because this is a huge appointment and one we need to get right !! Or we could be heading the other way instead of up . Not sure about Harris but do agree we need to mix it up a bit in this league , and probably already need to change a few players who seem to be a bit lightweight in this league .

If this who we end up with we might as well have kept with McCarthy

This appointment would be a step backwards. I stopped going when we had the McCarthy dross football. I have returned to be entertained with the ball on the deck,..too tippy tippy at times however, a huge improvement. Also if this appointment is made, why was this not put into place as soon as Mr Cook was dismissed to achieve continuity. The man is out of work why have references to clandestine meetings?
Mr Ashton this will see smaller crowds, further under achievement, dirty tactics, ball in the air, we are scarred by memories of Millwall under this man. Mr. Ashton don't make this appointment you will regret this and be remembered for getting rid of a good manager and replacing with a lesser manager who failed.

Perhaps a bit of aggressive hoofball is what's needed to get us out of the third division pub?

Lovely sideways and backwards passing hasn't worked particularly well over the last 20 years has it?

Stocktractor. That is a typical comment of some of our fans. If they appoint Harris it will be bcse they will, having interviewed a number of people, believe he's the right person. Of course fans will have their opinions on who they'd like. But we aren't the ones talking to these guys. Seems loads have the impression he's a hoofball style manager? So don't want him. Yet, they'd take Warnock who plays the same way. What they actually both do is like to play the ball up to the strikers then play their football in tbe oppositions half. So surely thats what fans want. As have moaned constantly about us playing the ball around too much in deep positions. And would almost certainly play 2 up front. Something else fans have been crying out for. End of the day, whoever they appoint, we all need to get behind him. All the negativity from fans has to stop. Else this club will go nowhere. We have to play our part.

If he has a plan b, does subs before the 67th minute and can bring a decent assistant manager then he will be an improvement on Cook.

Blues1 I agree in principle of what you say and I will stick up for certain
Managers but if it happens (which it will) I'm angry because in no way is he a step up from what we had already…no way near and he's nowhere near as good as warnock.
It will
Be a shocking appointment which we will all
Be on here in less than a year arguing about our next new manager and hopefully new CEO because if this does happen and it's a massive f up the Ipswich David Brent has to go as well.

This might be of interest:
Harris' first interview for Millwall - He might not be that bad you know. by wkj 10 Dec 2021 21:58
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Exm1joh5JNQ

He talks well, he's experienced with working with the youth and he knows the importance of fans.

I respect that he seems like an underwhelming choice for many, but he doesn't come across as clueless. The important thing - Harris used to be a striker, not a defender.

It is also worth mentioning that NH's 2016/2017 season saw Millwall finish 6th in the league. As a L1 team they also beat Bournemouth, Watford, and Leicester in the FA Cup - all three teams being in the premier league.

He might not actually be as bad an appointment as a fair few seem to believe.

He wouldn't be my ideal choice but if we do appoint him I'd be happy to give him a fair crack of the whip. None of the managers we're being linked with are getting me that excited to be honest, hopefully whoever we get can prove to be a useful surprise package.

Ashton knows how critical getting the decision right is. I think we have to recognise, however, just how difficult an exercise he is faced with. Would anyone on here honestly welcome that responsibility, and being forever held accountable for his/her decision?

For me, out of all the potential ‘suitors', as well as possessing the required coaching and management skills, the next manager should have that - almost indefinable - football intelligence, that makes them able to operate at that higher level than just training ground/match day focus.

Finding that individual, and one who is a good ITFC fit, certainly ain't easy; and it's highly probable that the Board's ideal choice would not chose to come here. So it's then trying to bring in a body who comes closest to the template. Harris might be that man; but as ever, only time will be the final judge - whoever gets the job.

Essexnblue.Re your post I too see him regularly watching local matches as I live in Eastwood not far from Rayleigh.I just don't think his style of football would suit this club nor the players we currently have.By the way I disagree with your comment on Cardiff being a bigger club than Ipswich.

Who ever is appointed it's a gamble . It looks like to me Harris is favourite to get the job. If so i shall be right behind him and not calling for his head if he doesn't start well like some morons on here feel free to mark me down. Personally i would have gone for Farke simply because he would have been able to attract some very good players to the club. Cannot believe the club have not approached him possibly he's already fixed up elsewhere or said early on that he was not interested. Short term Warnock would have been a good option he would have got the team playing as a unit.

People keep mentioning Farke who just left Prem club, who do think wr are, we are in league one and Farke will have loftier ambitions. Remember these managers are not itfc fans. Wake up! Harris is the kind of level we will attract.

Stocktractor. Doesn't matter who I want. It's who the club want that matters. Unfortunately we have fans such as urself who think we should be able to get top managers in. We cant. Ideally I'd like Lampard as I feel it would be a good thing for both parties, but I know thats unlikely. As for the rubbish of we'll be looking for a new ceo? Laughable. Hes the best thing that's happened to this club for years. The fact u even say that shows ur sone1 who purelyvwqnts to be negative about the club. As for warnock being miles better? How can u try tocompare some1 who's been in the game as long as he has as a manager to some1 who's only managed for a few years. And anyway, warnock has retired. Oh and I'm guessing ur a psychic as u know that if we appoint harris we'll be looking for a new manager this time next year. Frankly, he wouldn't be my choice neither tho, but if he should get it, I'll back him fully. As all true fans will.

Blues1 you're a big ball of contradiction, and you need a big cuddle.

I don't have unrealistic targets at all I just think even people out of the work are better than Harris.
Warnock being only one.

I'd like an ex player being given the job or someone with emotional ties to the club, poyet/tarrico, mowbray/Venus or even Venus, magilton or burley/butcher

If not that, have slightly more ambition than Harris and try get Coleman or someone with premier league experience, not someone that was a fans favourite at millwall and they got rid of him and a bog failure at Cardiff who basically said it was unrealistic of them to finish in the top 6.

And there's a difference between being a loyal support and just accepting whatever the club gives you, or do you just accept everything in life and don't strive to be better.

And as for ceo..we'll see.

..as I have said before Cook was a place holder and Ashton had a chance to see which of the new players could cut the mustard in advance of Jan. I'd be surprised if he didn't know all along who he wanted. To think that Evans finally got it right appointing a manager is akin to a leopard changing his spots.

Neil Harris’ preferred formation? by NorthLondonBlue2 11 Dec 2021 11:37
4-2-3-1 apparently.

Sigh …

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/neil-harris/profil/trainer/32718

I guess those stats look at the formation he played the most often while manager. Any Millwall or Cardiff fans should be able to confirm this as being the case or not.
