McKenna: Broken Week Due to Illness and Evans Suffers Setback
Thursday, 7th Apr 2022 14:24

Town boss Kieran McKenna will wait until tomorrow to pick his squad for the trip to Shrewsbury with a number of players having suffered with illness - but not Covid - during the week, while midfielder Lee Evans has had a setback in his recovery from his knee injury.

“We have had quite a broken week with illnesses, to be honest,” McKenna said when asked the fitness situation. “Not Covid, thankfully.

“We’ve had quite a few come down with illness, so we’re waiting until tomorrow for any team news. We’re going to give them all until Friday, the lads who have missed training.

“We’re going to have to wait and make a late call on the team and a late call on who is available to travel, so we’ll see who is available at tomorrow’s training session.

“In terms of injuries, no updates, Lee Evans unfortunately has had a little setback to his recover, so we won’t see him this weekend and it’s unlikely that we’ll see him over the next couple of games, so that’s obviously disappointing for him and for us. Other than that, everything is as it was on the injury front.”

George Edmundson (ankle), Kayden Jackson (hamstring) and Kyle Edwards (quad) all remain sidelined.

McKenna confirmed that as reported yesterday, centre-half Elkan Baggott won’t be joining up with an Indonesia U23s squad for a training camp ahead of the SEA Games this week.

“Elkan’s been with the squad and has been involved with a couple of squads lately and has been training with us for a long time, so he’s a player that is important that we have available and have with us until the end of the season,” he said.

“I’ve not been closely involved in those discussions but I believe that that is the case, that Elkan is going to stay with us until the end of the season and then he may have some more international duties in the summer with the senior team.”

Not suggesting we wholesale put out a weakened side, but would like to see a few new fringe player faces in the team for a run out. Lots of promising youngsters should get a crack like Baggott.
Ed Sheeran must have a bit of free time for a run around now he's not in court.

Could do worse than bring Humphries on from the bench. Evans hasn't really impressed me, more problems than anything, bit of a nothing player. We could do worse than Butcher at Accrington Stanley. We need a few thugs for next season. Note Wycombe won 4.1 away to Cambridge/ what are they doing right that we are not ?

Evans seems very injury prone and a player we can't rely on. Hope they all make speedy recoveries though. Our squad is big enough to cope. Little to play for either.

Shame about Evans, quite a whack he got against Burton, hes been out a while. Not sure I would call him injury prone though, hes had 2 injuries all season they've just taken a while to heal.
Humphreys needs to involved for me, Inevitably we will start with Bakinson away from home but CH is worth promotion above Carrol given our position.
Simpson too over Pigott, time to give these guys a taste if we can

jas0999 - I had this out with another poster (blues1( about Evans history of being injured calling him a 'sicknote' - okay a bit over the top but not that far from the truth. If you look at his playing history he rarely plays much more than 50/60% of a season, we signed him when he was injured (groin strain) and since he's been here had periods out due to various things but the knee injury is the one which keeps coming back...anyway not sure we've missed him that much as I've found him underwhelming particularly at dead ball situations and corners.

Mark chips- Sam Vokes. He's the difference. Can score, and ruffles defenders far better than any of ours. Ex prem league of course. Annoying, but is his dad grew up in Ipswich!!
