Former Blue Downes Close to Palace Move
Saturday, 2nd Jul 2022 20:34

Former Town midfielder Flynn Downes is reportedly on the verge of a move from Swansea City to Crystal Palace.

Downes, 23, left the Blues for the Swans last summer for a fee of £1.4 million and had a hugely impressive campaign with the Welshmen.

Now, according to BBC Sport, the Essex-born schemer is close to joining Premier League Palace.

No fee is mentioned but earlier in the week reports in Wales put Swansea’s valuation at £11 million to £12 million but with the Championship side ultimately expected to have to accept a lower but still significant figure.

Town look set to receive a windfall from the deal with it appearing likely that a sell-on was included in last summer’s deal, probably around 10 per cent of the Swans’ profit, although the club won’t comment on whether such a clause was put in place.

Palace previously tried to sign Downes in the summer of 2020 when the Blues turned down two bids from the Eagles, the second of £1.6 million.

Elephant in the room. Talking nonsense. Doenes asked for a transfer bcse we refused palaces offer. So how is that bring driven out. And if woolfenden was being driven out by Ashton too, how come he's still here. Some so called fans don't half talk som tripe.

Downes did himself no favours in his last season here.

He came across as petulant after the bid from Palace was turned down and was a loose cannon on the pitch, he head butted someone in a pre season friendly for crying out loud!

Good luck to him but getting rid was the right decision at the time.

I'm delighted for Flynn. Hope he gets plenty of first-team action at Palace and doesn't just stagnate on the bench.

The economics of football are hilarious. Ipswich turn down an offer of £1.6 million and Palace don't increase their bid, yet in a short time (if the rumours are true) they are prepared to offer over £10 million to Swansea. Let's hope they do pay a ridiculous amount and Ipswich gain a large sell on fee.

Cook saw that we needed a Clear out. I don't think many would argue with that. As for Downes, he obviously has enough talent to play higher up but we often saw a non-league thug with a poor attitude. He seems to have grown up a bit and I wish him well.
