Bonne: Unfinished Business at Town
Monday, 4th Jul 2022 09:19

Former Blues loanee Macauley Bonne believes he has “unfinished business” with Town, his hometown club who he supported as a boy.

Bonne, 26, spent 2021/22 at Portman Road on loan from QPR, scoring 12 goals, 11 of them by November 2nd.

“I feel I have got so much unfinished business with Ipswich Town,” he told the EADT in a lengthy interview about his time with the Blues.

“It could happen this summer, it could happen in January, it could happen next summer when I become a free agent.”

Bonne says he has had interest from other clubs who want to take him on a loan or a permanent basis this summer.

“They sound like really good football options, but it’s not all about the football side of things,” he reflected.

“I could move miles away from my family and be miserable. I’ve got lots of friends in football who have experienced that.

“It’s a short career, so I have to assess every single option. Those offers are still in play.

“I don’t think I have given QPR a good crack yet. It might still work there for me yet. There’s definitely a buzz about the place right now with [new manager] Michael Beale.

“I guess I’m in no man’s land right now. I’ve just got to be patient and see what happens.”

A Bonne return to Portman Road this summer would be a surprise with manager Kieran McKenna having already signed Freddie Ladapo following his Rotherham exit and with other players, including Leicester's George Hirst, on his list of potential targets.

Meanwhile, Derby County are reportedly weighing-up a move for ex-Blues striker David McGoldrick, 34, a free agent having left Sheffield United at the end of last season.

Bottom line, if we bring in Macauley Bonne again this summer, we won't be signing the 20+ goal a season marquee forward that we are all hoping is still coming; and that is irrespective of Pigott being sold.
So the question you've got to ask yourself is, do you like MB enough, and trust him enough to bang in the goals in a McKenna formation, to forsake us signing another striker of quality that McKenna will have identified to fit his style & squad?
Nice guy & fan of the club, but for me it's a no.

He scored goals yes but apart from 3/4 of them were easy for a striker and the chances he missed would have been the difference of us being in the play offs imo but if you think of any good strikers out there that are available or affordable we let one very good striker go in Norwood I don't think there are any as good as him that are available so a silly move in my eyes!!!!!

Am i the only one who thinks Piggott might have a good season this year ? I have an inkling he will score goals if given a run......he's done it before consistently.

You cannot buy a 20 goal a season striker. You can buy a striker that's potentially a 20 goal a season striker there's no guarantees. Piggott was a 20 goal a season striker potentially but didn't do it. Players don't just get given a run in the team they have to impress and earn it.

Sounds to me very much like he is angling for a return. Maybe worth another shot as he started so well. Perhaps off the field issues played their part.

Blue Harmong. How was piggott given enough kf a chance? Scored 3 goals in 5 games af start of season. Didn't play again for months. Then when he did jt was an odd start here or there, or mainly 10-15 minutes at the end of games. How was he supposed to get any match fitness or confidence when he hardly played. Needs to be given a run of games then maybe we'd see the real piggott. You don't go from scoring 22 goals one season to being a terrible player the next. Whether he will get those games here remains to be seen of course. If he's not going to then I'd say yes, may as well move him on. But otcto bring in bonne.

blues 1 Piggott scored those goals in the Micky mouse cups. Secondly you don't get picked on reputation. He failed to impress Cook and McKenna. No player gets given a run of games to see what he's like maybe in a pub league but not in professional football. He needs to buckle down work hard in training and impress McKenna that's how it works in professional football I'm afraid no special favours. If you remember Kayden Jackson done that and impressed McKenna dispite being treated badly by Cook. Perhaps you think McKenna's not the man for the job which is ok we are all entitled to our opinions.

@bazza8564 - jj our FIRST choice striker, really!! If he is then we ain't going up this season, bare in kmc plays 1 up top, a raw kid who hasn't exactly got a good scoring record is not someone who will be starting

we REALLY need a good striker this year, Bonne started last season like a goal machine, everyone wanted him signed up, then all the wheels came off, really dont think we can afford to take a chance on him again, but that said no player can be guaranteed to do what is needed.IMO we should look elsewhere because if he came back and didnt start banging them in his failure last season will be a cross to bare.

I just need to address a little something I picked up on throughout the comments so far, I can't speak for others but making my comment on MB earlier I had no thought of bringing him back as "our main striker" just bringing him back as he imo is a very decent striker to have in the squad, even if he played in a front 3 every match he would indeed be one of the main strikers in that respect but I think as others whom have commented do and that's "Our main striker" whether he is a signing or very high calibre loan that man is yet to come!!

That's the trouble with comments its impossible to get into someone else's mind and see what their interpretation of what you have written is.

Superb player, so much better than any striker we've had in years, up there with Murph as a talent. Would love him back and to be played week in week out on a three year contract. What he does off the ball alone is enough to justify it, strong, powerful and clever player. Another who's at standard a league higher but wants to play for us because he's one of us. Bring him in!

Not sure if you are talking about me as one of 'the others' (Lost!), but just to be clearer on my comment if so. KMcK has signed Ladapo & John-Jules already during this window, so we are only bringing in 1 more striker/center forward, if any, before the window shuts, even if Pigott is sold. Jackson is very much in the manager's thoughts, so we already have 3 strikers that are 'his guys'.
Ok, so he may change up his formation this season & play with one in the hole behind 2 strikers, and he may even go 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 at times, but for many games he is likely to play just one up front again, So if we were to bring back Bonne, would we have a real natural finisher among that group of 4?
Jackson, for all his pace & effort will score goals, but is not someone you'd bet a week's wages on in a one on one with the keeper. Ladapo is a different type of player, who will score different goals to Jackson, important ones that we'll need at times, but again, many of them are not the cleanest of finishes & he'll miss some big chances along the way. John-Jules might turn out to be a quality finisher, but is still very much unproven in senior league football.
Even when he was scoring early last season, Bonne missed some shockers, and as the season went on, whatever the reasons were, they got worse and worse. Unfortunately I just don't have the confidence in him to put that right this season, and I don't believe that he does either, given that it has happened him before too.
Arguably, Conor Chaplin is the best finisher we have, and he is likely to be deployed as a #10 behind the striker(s) most of the time.
I don't expect us to pick up somebody of Marcus Stewart's quality in the next month, but I do expect us to try.

Why is no one mentioning Chaplin when it comes to scoring 20+ a season?
He's a notorious goal scorer, even when coming off the bench and playing every other game from start (as people would call not being given a decent run of games). He's already in the building, why not play him on top? Any thoughts? (yes, I know he is not big and strong - but who cares as long as he keeps scoring goals)

Linkboy13. Where did I at any point say that I think mckenna us not the man for the job? Making up ur own agenda for me, are you? And no, not all piggott goals were in the " mickey mouse cup", as u put it. Tho even if they had have been what difference does it make? He still had to score them. U day about needing to impress in training and yes, thsts right too, but mckenna praised piggott forces performance in training but he still didn't get games. U say players don't get a run of games in processional football? Well bonne did, even when he wasn't scoring. Eventually yes he was left out, but piggott still wasn't given the chance. So if you don't sign a player on his reputation/ previous performance, what do you sign him based on? Let's face it, would we have signed him if he'd only scored 3 goals the previous season? Of course not. Endcof the day, give him chances, he'll score goals. Trouble is, he's had very few chances created for him in any game he's played. It could be that maybe he just doesn't fit in with our style of play but unless given the opportunity, we'll never know. I'll guarantee you one thing. If, like with will keane, some fans get their way, and he leaves, he'll go somewhere else and score goals.

The only thing unfinished is last season where you didn't turn up for half of it
