Wednesday Set to Face Investigation For Objects Thrown On Pitch
Sunday, 18th Sep 2022 15:54

Sheffield Wednesday are expected to be investigated by the FA following the incidents in which objects were thrown onto the pitch during yesterday’s 2-2 draw with the Blues at Hillsborough.

The match was held up late in the first half when what is understood to have been a vaping device was hurled towards a linesman, then after Town scored their second goal plastic bottles and other smaller objects, including a lighter, were thrown into the goalmouth defended by Town keeper Christian Walton. A young fan at the front of the stand is believed to have been struck by one of the bottles.

Referee Peter Wright, with whom home fans made their frustrations known throughout the game, spoke to both managers after this incident telling them that the game could be suspended or abandoned.

The FA will consider Wright’s match report and the Owls and South Yorkshire Police are likely to be asked for their observations.

In a statement, Wednesday said: “Following incidents at Hillsborough during Saturday’s League One fixture between the Owls and Ipswich Town, play was delayed on a number of occasions due to objects thrown from home stands towards the pitch.

“Sheffield Wednesday roundly condemn these unacceptable actions from a tiny minority of people who have undermined the good name of our club whilst putting into jeopardy the safety of players, officials and supporters.

“Such actions will not be tolerated and the club are currently in the process of conducting a thorough and robust internal investigation.

“For the avoidance of doubt, any individual identified as having breached EFL Ground Regulations and indeed the law will be sanctioned in the strictest possible manner, both by the club and relevant authorities.”

Quizzed what Wright had said to the two bosses, Blues manager Kieran McKenna said: “He was just speaking about the objects which had been thrown onto the pitch and said from a safety point of view that they were going to have to possibly review whether the game would be suspended if it continued. We’re glad that it didn’t reach that point and the game was able to finish.”

Wednesday boss Darren Moore added: “He said if another object was thrown on the pitch he was going to abandon the game for the safety of everybody on the pitch. He said he won't condone and have it any more.

“While ever we grow frustrated, we are not a sole entity in terms of how we manage the game. We have got to all govern and adhere to the rules. We know that objects being thrown onto the pitch is something that you don't do. It is something that we can all learn from today.

“He did warn me and Kieran that he would take the teams off and abandon the game, which would have been an absolute catastrophe for us as a football club being the home team.”

Very disappointing behaviour. Wednesday supporters are vociferous and in great number but they are usually very well behaved. Sadly like with all clubs it only takes a few supporters who don't behave as they should to destroy the good name of the majority.

I'm afraid we are moving towards having to be less and less tolerant of this sort of behaviour ; punishment will have to become mandatory and swift . It may well be to the detriment of the majority but so be it ; standards must be acknowledged and reinforced or mayhem and disorder will prevail !
Time for action from the FA ,no holds barred !

I think a fair outcome would be a fine and a warning of future sanctions including a points deduction and a behind closed doors fixture. All the Wednesday fans I've met are decent people and I'm sure the perpetrators will be identified and banned.

What would have been the outcome if the match was abandoned at 2-0 to us? Would we have been awarded the three points?

There will be a nominal fine of, ohhh £5k or someth8ng a slapped wrist, a round of drinks. I doubt Sheffield W will lose too much sleep over it.

It'd be good if the EFL started getting a grip on this sort of thing, but if they do it'll be against a club that doesn't matter like FGR or Burton for spilling a drink or something.

Deduct their point: undeserved anyhow.

I have to say that their forums seem very toxic. I mean we have negative fans and I'm not immune to it myself (until Kieran mainly) but some of the comments about Darren Moore are just ridiculous. Genuinely seem to think they should win every game three to five nil so the second goal probably brought out the Putin in them. Or maybe just that Moore was still the manager at kick off.

Wednesday are very fortunate to have a

Comparing yesterday to Millwall in 78 is OTP- no bricks, punches thrown, No ambushes, pitch invasions etc as far as I am aware.
But throwing things on the pitch is an increasingly common event - Marseille had a game last year abandoned and mindless copy cat action occurred and WILL Occur I nearly got by a full plastic bottle at Oxford away last year
Weed out the villains make examples of them- ban them, fine them and make them spend every Saturday litter picking on the A1. Castration ?
Did I dream it or were cans being sold inside the ground yesterday ? That seems like an accident waiting to happen.

It does make you wonder if the intimidation influenced the lino into ‘bottling' the offside for their equaliser.

Nothing will be done as per usual. The FA are spineless .

A mandatory ten point deduction per item retrieved from the pitch. That should do the trick.....

I'm sure the linesman didn't wanna put his flag up because he knew the reaction there would be. Whilst not right it is an example of passionate fans making their home ground a hard place to go and somewhere where they can help influence the game. I hated just about everything about Roy Keanes time at Portman Road but he was right about one thing, Ipswich town can be too nice

4 points cheated from us last few games. If I were Gamechanger I would be wondering if they can sue the league for the poor quality refereeing.

These decisions could cost them millions

OliveR16 interesting you say that, I went with a good mate who's a Wednesday fan. He was saying there's way too much negativity in the fans and it often works against the team. Apparently they have had several junk throwing incidents in the recent past and the club have never sorted it out properly. Maybe they will now... However the officials definitely got intimidated by the vitriol of their support in that game. The ref was not up to the standard required for a fixture of that magnitude.

The way to combat this is to shut the stand(s) the objects were thrown from for 3 games - making sure that the good fans will have no second thoughts of reporting the thugs to stewards in the future

A clear offside “goal” - could it be the atmosphere intimidated the officials ?

I went with a friend from Yorkshire and we made the mistake of sitting in the North Stand section of Sheff Wed supporters nearest our away end. They threw things at the lino on our touchline on at least three separate occasions, two of what looked like lighters being retrieved by the ref but other objects going unnoticed. A foghorn bloke behind me spent the best part of the match shouting at the lino that he was a 'bent bas**rd' and a 'c**t'. It was a highly unpleasant tinderbox atmosphere when we went 2-0 up that turned into a cauldron of support for them at 2-1. You have to wonder whether that influenced the officials on allowing the equaliser, which looked suspiciously offside to me in real time from much further away than them...

No doubt the incompetent authorities involved will issue a small
Fine and slap on wrists, don't do it again children. Points deduction far more meaningful to both club and fan base and a statement of no tolerance exemplified.
