Adams Disappointed to Lose
Sunday, 9th Oct 2022 09:52

Morecambe boss Derek Adams was disappointed not to take anything from his side’s 2-1 defeat to the Blues at the Mazuma Stadium yesterday.

The Shrimps took the lead in the 34th minute through Kieran Phillips but Town hit back via George Edmundson and Lee Evans, who converted from the penalty spot after Conor Chaplin had missed an earlier spot-kick.

“We’re disappointed not to take anything from the game,” Adams told his club site. “I thought it was an entertaining game, it was probably one of our best performances of the season.

“I think we took the game to Ipswich. We started on the front foot, and we got that goal, ahead from a set play, a great ball in and Kieran Phillips was able to put us 1-0 ahead.

“We looked very comfortable, we limited Ipswich to very few chances throughout the 90 minutes, they had openings, but they weren’t clear cut.

“All we’ve shown is we’ve got some really good players who will enable us to move in a positive direction.”

He added: “We pressed Ipswich all over the park, the second-best team in league at this moment in time, and they didn’t like it. We fed off that because we created openings from it.

“They then changed things about, we adapted to that, I thought they started the second half well, they got a foothold in the game, then they scored from a set play we shouldn’t have conceded.

“Over the 90 minutes, I’m proud of the players. I thought we put in a magnificent effort, the 11 and then the substitutes coming on helped us as well. I was just delighted with the players.”

In the first 5 minutes they were a mess but then I thought they changed to a 5 at the back and coped really well with John Jules on the half turn getting 2 players around him and being super aggressive.
Not sure why they dropped to defend the penalty area in the second half but they invited us on to them and we took advantage. I think we will see a lot more of this tactic in the coming games but it will open the wings
Morsy and Evans were not in the game in the first half but dominated in the second
Morecambe could have had 2 players sent off - Stockton, who should have scored after pushing Donacien, Elbowed Evans - a definite red.

31% of the ball, ten fewer shots than us and two on target to our six and you think you should have got something out of the game?

Absurd optimism is alive and well and living in the NW of England!

I think the teams in this division have taken note of how we can dominate games and are collectively frightened. This is probably why teams try different approaches ranging from trying to bore us to death to punching us on the nose. Either way we have a big enough and capable enough squad to deal with most things thrown at us.
The five substitutions is certainly playing into our hands also.
I was delighted to see Richard Keogh in the starting line up. He was certainly needed yesterday. That is not a knock on Luke Woolfenden either who I think is an excellent player but Richard's presence at the club both on and off the field is valuable.

Deluded, or just building up his players?

They only had 2 shots on target, in addition to our goals we had a missed penalty and hit the woodwork 3 times plus they should have had a man sent off.

Tbh if Morecambe apply their approach against us, to the their remaining opponents I'd say they'll be a league one club again next season. They caused us problems in that first half, mire than many supposedly bigger clubs have this season.

You and me both Derek! Only on this occasion you and your team did nothing of note to warrant a win or draw for that matter!

Just to echo Grimsbys point we hit the post 3 times missed a penalty, now if those 4 had gone in, it would have been a flattering score line, but he can't bemoan the fact his team came second!

Football managers and politicians seem to lead the pack when it comes to spouting drivel. Thankfully, our manager doesn't follow that trend.

Adams says they limited us to very few chances [ we had 17 shots , 6 on target & 69% possession ] I would say that is more than very few !!
