Dyer Issues Health Update
Friday, 28th Oct 2022 14:12

Former Town midfielder and coach Kieron Dyer has issued a positive update on his health situation, a year on from announcing he would require a liver transplant.

At the end of October last year, the 43-year-old revealed he had been diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare disease which attacks the bile ducts, leading to them becoming scarred, with a liver transplant the only current treatment.

Ipswich-born Dyer, who left his role as Blues U23s coach in March, went on the transplant waiting list and had expected to undergo the surgery early this year, however, following more recent tests, the need for a new liver is now regarded as less urgent.

“It’s well documented that I need a liver transplant,” Dyer told talkSPORT. “We thought that I would be having that within three to six months but I have my bloods checked regularly and my markers are so good at the moment that they are delaying the operation.

“We don’t know when I’ll have the operation because my bloods and my symptoms and everything, I’m doing really well.

“It’s good news in a way, but sometimes you just want it done so you can start to crack on with your life and do a job properly.

“But I’m really positive and in my off time, because I want to be a coach, I’ve picked different managers’ brains, watched training sessions, watched all sorts of football from the National League all the way up to Champions League clubs. I’m like a sponge at the moment absorbing all this knowledge that I’m getting.”

Best wishes to Kieron. Still remember when he threw his shirt into the crowd after the Bolton play-off game and I was gutted, as I knew it almost certainly meant his time was up at Ipswich.
And if you haven't read Dyer's book it's a must read. Get it on your Xmas list, you can't go wrong.

Good to hear. There are some procedures that can help clear the biliary tree, however from the initial diagnosis it seems there weren't practical. I had a cholecystectomy, and a 'flush' of the bile ducts a few months ago - amazing how one procedure can so dramatically reduce pain (albeit with some longer-term complications). The pain experiences from biliary colic and cholecystitis are severe enough, hate to think what KD has been going through. Hope the improvements continue!
