Swans Recall Whittaker From Plymouth
Tuesday, 3rd Jan 2023 18:46

Swansea have confirmed the recall of forward Morgan Whittaker from his loan at League One leaders Plymouth Argyle.

The move had been widely expected following Swans manager Russell Martin’s comments regarding on-loan Whittaker last night.
"
Argyle director of football Neil Dewsnip told his club’s website: “We are obviously disappointed that Morgan’s loan has been cut short.

“He was enjoying his football tremendously and we felt we were providing the best possible environment for him to develop and contribute.

""“We did everything we could to retain Morgan for the duration of the loan as initially agreed, but it was not to be.

“Morgan loved his football here, which is a testament to [manager] Steven Schumacher and the club as a whole for our approach to player care and we hope he can continue to build on the promise he has shown here.

""“The recruitment department at the club plans for any eventuality and we are already well under way with our January operations, as is clear by the additions of Ben Waine and Saxon Earley.

""“Argyle is an exciting club to play for right now and a brilliant place for talented young players to come and improve, as Morgan has evidenced.

“We are confident that, thanks to the backing of the board, our additions in January will ensure that we are not knocked off course by the disappointing loss of Morgan.”

Whittaker appears unlikely to play for Swansea from Martin's comments yesterday when he said it was the club's owners who had instigated the recall with a permanent switch away from South Wales on the cards.

In November, TWTD revealed that the 21-year-old was among those on Town's list of potential January recruits. Whether the Blues' interest ultimately comes to fruition remains to be seen, while other clubs, including some in the Championship, are understood to be keen.

Elsewhere, it's expected that summer Town target George Hirst's loan from Leicester to Blackburn will be cut short in January with the Foxes then set to send the 23-year-old out elsewhere.

The striker has made only three starts and eight sub appearances for the Ewood Park club.

Coming to us probably wide of mark but a significant blow to a promotion rival is a bonus

It's not as though you can take manager or club statements as fact in these circumstances, but unless we are signing him permanently and a deal has been agreed I very much doubt we'll be getting him. I don't want a lad coming our way on loan who'd rather be elsewhere any way. As is usual though we don't know the in's and outs… just the public utterances.

Think the main benefit is the knock to Plymouth. Everyone is knocking Ladapo, but Whittaker has scored 9 goals this season - only 2 more than Ladapo (who has started a lot less games than him, and has an established reputation as a goal scorer at this level).

Ringwoodblue. Not sure why ud want scarlett? He's scored 3 goals in 20 games at Pompey.

Pay the odds we can afford it!!

Doesn't look like Whittaker is happy about his loan being ended. Why would he want to come here?

Just for the record, Whittaker-played31, 9 goals, Ladapo-played 29, 10 goals & cost nothing but is 8 years older.

blues1 - that comment about Scarlett was a bit tongue-in-cheek tbh. I don't think Spurs would want to sell and they are probably happy where he is.

Whittaker hasn't scored since 31st October, is that right?

Plymouth knew that it was likely they'd lose him anyway (which is probably why they signed Ben Waine). Didn't realise they had also signed Saxon Earley from Norwich. They are definitely trying to strengthen for their promotion push, but I feel Whittaker will be a huge loss to them. Outstanding player at this level and should (for sure) be playing at a higher level.

Swansea have no doubt agreed a fee for Whittaker from another, as yet, unnamed Club !
I doubt they've recalled him to play - he's done a Fantastic job of putting himself in the Shop Window at Plymouth.
We ( ITFC ) should be making more of what we have at our disposal - signing more won't necessarily correct our failings, it's more than just that.

If you look at Wikipedia

He is on as signing for Ipswich Town on loan from the 3rd of Jan.

If true it must be with a view of a permanent deal, I am guessing with in a few weeks

Whittaker is say he is devastated to leave Plymouth not good for us if he signs

Karlos, Wikipedia is sometimes (often) inaccurate!

16 goals in 88 Pro appearances. Despite being a very talented lad, is he what we are looking for right now? Not saying I'd turn him away, just a thought!

Agree so not putting my house on it. I will be surprised if we do sign him as he saying how devastated he is being recalled.

But if Town are offering him a permanent deal with a good wage it might happen. I am guessing the loan (if it happens) will be to give both sides time to sort a deal out.

Noticed that they didn't say thanks to Whittaker. Suggests he had something to do with it?

I really dont know if hes coming or not but the guff i see i ask you, people saying he loves it there and is hurt at leaving, its football speak all players say those thing, anyone remember another young lad called back from a loan and was hurt after doing so well to be sold to huddesfield a certain simpson, not heard a word about swindon since smiley photos at his new club.

It no longer says that on his Wikipedia.

We have a forward who can tire defences (Jackson), one who can hold the ball up and tap them in (Ladapo), one who lacks any ball control (Jules-John), but none who are natural goalscorers. We need one of those.

Great player but suspect we are just going to have to settle for the damage it will do to Plymouth's hopes should they not sign a decent replacement. I still think we need to strengthen the defence and midfield before a striker as we still top scorers so goals are there, just need to make the backline watertight for me.
