Former Blues Boss McCarthy Leaves Blackpool
Saturday, 8th Apr 2023 11:46

Former Blues boss Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor have left their roles with Blackpool after less than three months.

McCarthy, 64, was handed the reins at Bloomfield Road on January 19th following Michael Appleton’s sacking but has failed to improve the Tangerines’ fortunes, winning two, drawing three and losing nine of his 14 games in charge.

The Seasiders sit second bottom of the Championship, seven points from safety with six games left to play.

A statement on the Lancastrians’ official website reads: “Blackpool Football Club can confirm Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor have both left the club by mutual consent.

“With results on the pitch not improving in recent weeks, the decision has been agreed by both parties that a change is needed.

“The club would like to thank both Mick and Terry for their efforts and wish them well for the future.”

McCarthy added: “After recent performances and results, I have thought long and hard and feel this is the best decision for everyone concerned with the football club.

“I've loved my time here and thank everyone for their support. I wish everyone well going forward.”

U23s coach Stephen Dobbie will take charge for the rest of the season, assisted by Matt Blinkhorn and Steve Banks.

I feel sorry for Mick and Terry–two good men. And I really don't see what Blackpool hope to achieve by this–the mania for sacking managers is getting sillier by the week.

Perhaps blackpool want a more entertaining brand of football to entice fans to watch. Clearly hasnt worked for firefighter mick who will probably just retire along with his exciting style of play

londontractorboy will be crying over this...haven't seen him on here since our upturn of results!

Mick's days are over at managing at a reasonable level.

I'm sorry but this made me laugh. Yes it is of interest to me as an Ipswich fan because MM's football was an integral part of the demise of our club. Yes Evans bears 90% of the blame, but falling gates (19k average falling to 16k average in his four seasons) wont have helped Evans' enthusiasm for rebuilding. Contrast that with Gamechanger and Kiaran's football, a division lower we've gone from 19k in Evans last season to 22k last year, almost 26k this year and with only 500 average away fans that's within 2000 of selling out.
Football fans want to be entertained, McCarthy's football, by our own songs at Norwich in 2018, was sh*t.

As you once said about leaving ITFC “That didn't work out too well did it”

Martin587 it may be of no interest to you but for other town fans it is. Like or loathe them, MM and TC played an integral part in our recent history.

Surley there must be a role for Mick and Terry at the club.

Perhaps wearing the Bluey and Crazee outfits on the occasional Saturday?

I remain a total believer in MM whose character and ethics had much to commend : a man of honesty and integrity he was ,as we all recognise , ill served by the Evans reign . Though Town were undoubtedly rescued by the injection of his money , never at any stage did he attempt to become involved in the development of ITFC stadium , facilities OR come up with anything other than extremely limited support ( financial or otherwise) for the playing squad .
We can , however, plainly now see just what can and is being done , but of course only because of the new external and enthusiastic backing !
Even with the benefit of hindsight there's nothing positive to be said about continuing to curse MM : at Blackpool he faced pretty insurmountable challenges and again with little but hope and good wishes to sustain and back a struggling entity !
Let's hope there's a ray of sunshine for him , spreading from a now successful ITFC who he served to the best of ability in very straightened circumstances !

Nicely put Suffolkboy.
I won't abuse MM & TC, perhaps they are behind in the modern managerial game, but he was our manager, he didn't do too bad especially with the woeful financial backing from Evans.
Articulate guy is MM, just wish h8m the best & move on politely, there's enough bad feeling in the world at present.

MM did very well with the hand he had at Town. Fans wrath should never have been directed at him but at an underinvesting, harmful owner who set us back years. If it had been and he had sold sooner we probably wouldn't be in division 3 now

Wow Suffolkboy you've seen the light! And the reality that Evans was a disaster for ITFC

Abujablue…Split decision there I think but I wish him no ill.A football managers job is always short lived and result based.Unfortunately he failed there.

I'd sack it if I were him, stick to punditry if he's thoughts and contributions are still relevant in this digital age ‘cause let's face it, he's still in dial up!

Mcarthys standing as a man is and never has been the issue... It was the terrible tactically inept style of football he served us year in year out...
But those dark clouds have parted and the light that is KM is shinning bright.

I've little time for McCarthy now. I recall not that long ago that he commented something like “ I hope they're ( us Town fans) are enjoying their sexy football in league one. Basically taking the p155 out of us now we're in league one. So you T055a, yes thanks , I'm REALLY enjoying our sexy football. I bet the Blackpool fans are glad to see the back of you (they only had to endure 14 games of your utter tripe, we had 5-6yrs of it)!

I have no sympathy for MM, I still see his foul mouthed abuse against are fans at Norwich. Remember the phrase ‘careful what you wish for' followed by the delight from MM that we went down. Quite frankly even if we fail to gain promotion this season, I would rather be under the management of Game Changer with KM in charge. Never under the MM/Evans era was Portman Road bouncing as it was yesterday. ‘Careful what you wish for?' We thé fans were careful and got you Mick and Evans out!,

For those still singing MM's praises (for what ?) at Ipswich Town - just check his success Record since he left, at each Club he's been at.
Abject Failure, as he was with us - other than a Flurry !!
Who in the Game is likely to give him another Managers position ? - extremely unlikely is my guess.
MickMa' has had his Game, and Added Time … !!
