Town Linked With Free Agent Cathcart
Sunday, 2nd Jul 2023 18:56

Town are reported to be interested in free agent former Watford centre-half Craig Cathcart.

According to the Daily Mirror’s Darren Witcoop, the Blues and League One Reading are among a number of teams interested in the 34-year-old 72-times-capped Northern Ireland international.

While Town look set to be in the market for another central defender this summer, and most likely an experienced one to take on the role vacated by Richard Keogh following his release in May, we understand the story is nothing more than a rumour at this stage.

Belfast-born Cathcart started his English career with Manchester United’s academy but left Old Trafford before making a senior appearance.

The 6ft 2in tall defender spent time on loan at Royal Antwerp, Plymouth and Watford while with the Red Devils before joining Blackpool on a permanent basis in August 2010 ahead of their only Premier League season.

After four years at Bloomfield Road, Cathcart returned to the Hornets on a full-time basis in June 2014, where he stayed until his release this summer.

Over his two spells, in which he featured in six Premier League seasons, Cathcart made 243 starts and 19 sub appearances, scoring eight times.

We might as well have Keogh a years contract
For me would like to see a young central Defended who is better than Woolfenden or at least as good so that there is competition for that spot

Hope I'm wrong but I thought something was up with Burguess yesterday at Felixstowe he seemed aloof and uninterested in interacting with the fans as he walked around the pitch before kickoff.
If we are interested in this guy I hope it's as an experienced defender in the role that Keogh played as a direct replacement for him.

No thanks, we should be looking to the future rather than a 34 year old.

A centre back who knows the division and has experience
that's seems like a good idea -
Having Keogh was not a failure last season -
I'd be up for this

Generally good comments about him from the Watford forum-

Might be the experienced defender we need at the back.

He's quality, and a leader. Remains vital for Northern Ireland. Slowing down but can still fill in and be a big training ground and dressing room presence. I wouldn't say no to him, especially with our other centre halfs still young.

Quality player and would do a good job in the Championship. Is still playing at International level and has played against some of the worlds best strikers. Ideal signing I'd say.

He played 28 Championship games last season, for a side who have money, have no problem signing new players & had expectations of promotion to the Premier League. He is also still a regular starter for Northern Ireland in the Euro qualifiers.
So he is no mug, past it, just looking for a pay day.
I can see us being interested in him, for the same reasons we brought in Keogh last season; the Championship is a step up, played at a different tempo & with greater concentration needed - he'd bring experience that Woolfenden, for one, would certainly benefit from.
Plus, he is from the same part of the world as McKenna, who probably knows him already, which would be an additional draw. I think there could well be something in the 'link'.
If we were to end up bringing in those most strongly linked - Cathcart, new keeper for Hladky, Rak-Sakyi & 2 from Hirst, Surridge & Simms (especially Hirst), I think we'd be in a good enough position to take on this league. Of course we'll, no doubt, sign at least 1 new player completely out of left field too, & I expect we'll have a couple of these signings in the door this week, ahead of the trip to Austria.
- I'm still hopeful on Hirst, as he hasn't been ruled out & Leicester will have to sort out their incomings before letting him leave.

I don't get this signing players because they are good around the dressing room might as well sign Terry Butcher. I think if the truth be known we made a mistake with Keogh who was a bit passed his best so we made up a role for him as a good man to have around the dressing room. We need to be signing players that can come in and make a difference . Don't know much about Cathcart but 34 seems a bit too old. And people knocking Wolfenden saying he needs experience beside him have short memories he made his debut in the championship and done well and even by Ipswich standards he's no longer a up and coming youngster.

Linkboy, I think it's slightly different to what you say in this case. I'm with you in general on signing a player to have around the dressing room - just have someone around the dressing room, without taking up a place in the squad - but Cathcart offers more than that. His recent record is good & 34 isn't over the hill for a centre half.
My point re: Woolfenden is not that he is young & inexperienced per se, but he does (still) have a tendency at times to be a bit casual & lose concentration. Having someone like Cathcart alongside him would definitely help him & giving him the kick up the ass he might need in certain games.

There is a clear strategy to have a young squad with a senior mentor in attack, midfield and defence who can also play a few games but mainly add value to the younger players they are helping develop. Last year it was Keogh, Massimo/Morsey and Aluko. There will be someone to shepherd the defenders, im not sure how much better is available.

Really dont get some of our fans. We cannot go with just young players, and/or players with little or no championship experience. If you look at our defence, wooĺfenden. No experience , burgess, very little, Clarke, a bit, Davies, none. We need an experienced head. And someone like Cathcart, who played 28 games in championship last season., would fit that bill. Still got a few years in him as yet, so why not.

The love of wisdom. Really?. We need an experienced defender to help out a defence with little or no championship experience, and you think we should use Baggott? Who's had minimal experience at lge1 level, let alone the championship?

If McKenna wants him in the squad that's good enough for me.

No problem with it, you could see Keough was a huge influence last season in the changing room and I would see this as replacing him.
