Villa Winger Linked With Blues But Looks Set to Join Hull City
Monday, 21st Aug 2023 16:13

The Blues are reported to be among the clubs rivalling Hull City for Aston Villa winger Jaden Philogene.

Over the weekend, it emerged that the Tigers were closing in on signing the 21-year-old in a deal worth around £5 million.

And this morning, The Athletic, reported that Town and Stoke have also shown interest.

However, according to the Hull Daily Mail, the Tigers are now “on the cusp” of signing Philogene and one-time Town trialist Keinan Davis in a £6 million deal.

Despite manager Unai Emery being keen to keep Philogene as part of his squad, the Londoner is keen to move on to play more regular first-team football and Villa are said to be willing to allow him to move on for the right price.

Former England U19 and U20 international Philogene, who has two years left on his Villa contract, joined the Birmingham club’s academy from the Pro:Direct Academy and has spent spells on loan with Stoke and last season with Cardiff City, making 27 starts and 12 sub appearances, scoring five times.

For Villa, he has made one senior cup start and five sub appearances, including an 87th-minute appearance in the opening-day 5-1 defeat at Newcastle.

Another forward may well be on manager Kieran McKenna's list before the transfer window closes on September 1st with Kyle Edwards having been made available for either loan or permanent transfer.

Another centre forward and a centre-back are almost certainly top of McKenna's wishlist before the window shuts.

Meanwhile, a number of Oxford United sources are linking the U’s with Blues left-back Greg Leigh.

The 28-year-old Jamaica international joined Town in the summer of 2022 after leaving Morecambe and has been an important member of the squad, although with his league starts limited to only four due to the form of Leif Davis.

In addition to those four League One starts, Leigh has made 12 sub appearances and six cup starts, scoring one goal.

Town would be very reluctant to part with Leigh without having brought in a replacement of a similar quality.

I can hear and see Jim Bowen saying "look what you could have won ...." then drawing back the curtains to reveal a speedboat for someone who lives in the Midlands.

We need to be moving to get a couple in. Linked to lots but all seem to be going elsewhere. The project is proving hard to sell it appears. Other clubs ambitions are as forward thinking as our and seem to be a better selling point at the moment. We need to widen that small pool of players MA keeps talking about. Do we even look abroad?!

We don't hear anything about players Ashton wants to sign until they turn up at Portman Road for a medical.

Our needs appear well recognised ,by supporters AND ITFC management ; but it’d be a real surprise if we compromised on standards and character ( OR over paid ,either in fees or wages ) .
Patience is often hard to exercise ,and impatience hard to contain !
Let’s remain ‘ cool ‘ and believe — as we DO !

@naylorsrightboot we are 3rd favourites for the title behind only Leicester and Southampton so surely any player looking us must think there is a half a chance they might be playing prem footy next season with all the financial benefits that will bring. I don't see many other clubs outside the prem with a better story to tell than us

Would be a great shame to see Greg Leigh move on -

Never let us down and was outstanding at
Derby last season.

It will come down to a combination of realistic wage demands, age and being bought into the project. MA and KMcK will be VERY particular and rightly so. Hirst's wages were a massive leap but he was 100% committed. They won't publicise anything so we just have to wait. Agony though it is.

Still believe a cheeky bid for that Armstrong boy would be advantageous. That boy is scary quick and I can see him linking well with either Broadhead or Hirst.

Third favourites based on three games... the pendulum will swing if (heaven forbid) our results wane. Current betting odds doesn't mean much.

I believe we're not as well equipped to pay high wages as some might think. Some clubs are more willing to gamble and pay the premium to get themselves promoted - Town won't compromise on that. Plus I think we have a higher bar on personality assessment of the player which probably vets out plenty of options - which I prefer.

As the All Blacks say about their teams 'no d**kheads allowed'.

The club have made it very clear that we have precise requirements for players coming here and if they are not desperate to come then we move on. The club have also made it clear that we will not pay over the odds for any player and we will only do deals that are good for our club. Personally I like the fact that we are so very choosey and I'm sure that the club will succeed in bringing a couple more in but if they don't then it's for the right reasons. This is a great club and it's being run in the right way.

For the first time since new ownership and money came in, we are not the dominant Team in the transfer sagas going on. We will now find out what planning and skills Ashton and his team have as regards getting the right players in rather than (if suggestions/TWTD are correct) focusing in on players as they become available and entering bidding war situations. Would still like to think this is not a serious move on our part and that we have our targets and are just waiting for circumstances to align and to be able to bring them in on loan or permanent. Time will tell but in Ashton we (have to) trust.

PortmanTerrorist if there is one person I truly trust in business terms it's Mark Ashton, he is a committed professional and against all odds brought us Hirst. I think maybe a couple more will come in and maybe a couple depart, but like others I'm not interested in gossip or a bidding war, where only the agents win.

We will all have to wait and see, our club hasn't been in such a good position for many years, enjoy the ride and the suspense!!!!

It was a good result Saturday but it did reveal some weaknesses. Burgess is an ok stopper but not much of a footballer and our forwards struggled- out wide and Hirst. The bright spot is Chaplin, not just for goals. He is the one player who can do the unexpected. Hutchinson has been brought in for that but QPR just bullied him.

Think we should keep Leigh - always been reliable whenever needed.

Would us like to add another striker and more competition for Burns - maybe Rak-Sakyi on loan, but noticed he's been on the Palace bench recently so may not be an option. Other than that not sure we need to do much else until January when we can take stock of where we are.

Greg leigh is a qaulity player! If he leaves we should expect a decent transfer fee

I like Leigh, and will be sad to see him depart.

Unless of course we have a PA Masterclass in the offing...

I’m sure Greg would love to stay if he was playing first team football but he isn’t and he’s 28 and beginning to run out of time if he doesn’t get first team soccer now. And he’s too old to be developed. My guess is we have to accept he wants to leave for the fair reasons so need find a replacement (young Williams of ManU would fit the bill) and wish Greg well

One in - One out ? is not what we need.
We need adding to the Squad - play around, drag your feet in the Championship - and it will punish us …. !!!
