Town Confirm Scarlett Loan Signing
Thursday, 31st Aug 2023 15:06

Town have confirmed the signing of Dane Scarlett on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

TWTD revealed in March that Scarlett was among the players the Blues had been keen on in the January transfer window and the move comes as little surprise.

In October last year, following Town's 3-2 victory over Scarlett's previous loan club Portsmouth, Blues boss Kieran McKenna revealed how highly he rated the 19-year-old.

“One of the only players they have who doesn’t have Championship experience is one of the best young strikers in world football, in my opinion, in Dane Scarlett,” he said.

Although not on target in that game, Scarlett, who has also signed a new four-year deal with Spurs, scored at Portman Road in Pompey's 2-0 victory over the Blues in the Papa Johns Trophy in November.

“I’m really excited to get started here,” Scarlett told TownTV. “I found out I was officially moving yesterday but the move has been in the works for a few weeks.

“I remember playing against Ipswich last season and it was a good game. I liked the way the team played so I’m really looking forward to being part of that.“

McKenna, who has been aware of Scarlett since his time coaching at Tottenham’s academy, added: “Dane is a very exciting young forward who the staff and I have known about for a long time.

“He is an explosive finisher with both feet and someone who has good movement in the final third. He is also someone who works very well for the team out of possession.

“Dane is ready for his second loan spell having gained a year’s worth of experience with Portsmouth last season, and we feel that puts him in a good position to step up to this level and be an important member of the squad. We’re excited to have him here.”

Scarlett spent last season on loan at Fratton Park, scoring six goals in 24 starts and 16 sub appearances.

For his parent club, the 5ft 11in tall frontman has made three senior starts - all in the Europa Conference League - and seven sub appearances, two in the Premier League without finding the net.

Hillingdon-born Scarlett has won England caps at U15, U16, U19 and U20 levels and in 2022 was a member of the squad which won the UEFA European U19 Championship.

Scarlett, who will wear the number 24 shirt while with the Blues, is Town's sixth signing of the summer.

Will he.be playing just behind a front two ? Or be used as a sub to come on ?

Andy32Cracknell: I certainly wouldn't object to a proven Championship striker, but the key point is, where is he to be found? And would we be able to compete with the likes of Leeds, Leicester, etc. if he was? So, I think we have found the best solution in our currrent circumstances.

Another example of our manager's excellent connections within the game and the benefits it can bring.

This and the other two loans speak volumes of the high regard these clubs have for KMcK. Looking at the video, I can see why Dane might not have been too popular with some Portsmouth fans. Fancy putting world class balls into areas where the carp Pompey players wouldn’t even imagine getting on the end of them. Hirst, Chappers and co can fill their boots. COYB

I had forgotten all about Scarlett because of Colby Bishop, but remember he was a handful against us. Quick and skilful. Have no doubt McKenna will get the best out of him and can see him blending in well with our other front players.
Be interesting to see if there are any more new arrivals tomorrow?
Lets hope so!!

Correct me if im wrong but he's not proven in the championship that's way above the standard of league one. It's plainly obvious Gamechanger are not prepared to spend championship money on players and the lack of experience in the squad worries me a bit especially at the back where it matters most.

When he shoots wide or over, he will be Miss Scarlet, in the dining room with the lead piping.

Coat, gone

Some comments regarding loans I partially agree with, but we obviously won't be able to sign the lad as Spurs probably rate him. To get a twenty goal striker alongside whoever plays up front would cost many millions. Fair play rules maybe mean if we intend bringing in another one or two and there are fees involved then we would be pretty close to our limit. Getting players in obviously hasn't been as easy as it was in League One as the players we need are one's able to step up to the Premier League.

An exciting signing that works well for all. We get a highly promising young player, Spurs know that we will develop him.

I understand the disappointment of those who want a proven Championship grade striker. However, one of those would cost a huge amount of money and may put us in trouble with financial fair play.

I admit that I knew nothing of this guy. Looking at the videos it wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't equally played at 10 as well as 9 he is a very different type of number ten to those we have, and it will be like two up top when he plays at 10 too ... he looks exciting and let's hope it is a very successful loan year for club (s) and player alike :-)

Happy with this, he's a real talent. So waa John Jules but injury put paid to him. Just hope Scarlett stays fit.

Old fart 71: spot on mate. I also share the loan concern but its a dilemma. We can't afford to buy in permanently some if the quality we need, as was the case in L1. So KMcK will have to box clever between loans, youth development and bargain young ish players to develop on (such as Hirst, Davis, Broadhead). Also share the views that we do need that quality central defender as not convinced that what we have in central defence will be enough quality at this level.

I’m afraid this talented guy is a year or two from a great scorer. We need them now right ?

What don't you all realise we didn't get sod all money for last year's promotion relegated teams get millions getting relegated from premiership then sell their best who were not good enough to keep them up then spend stupid money on wannabes better to do what KMcK is doing spend good money on committed players and supplement with loanees so keeping in FFP rules all hungry players who want to play and prove a point. Premier here we come.

Mourinho, Conte and McKenna say the lads quality that’ll do me!
Looks like Louis Marsh is a possibility according to some reports not shocked after he scored a hatrick against us recently in the U21’s

Btw: Sheffield Utd had three loan players last season. It didn’t seem to do them too much harm.

Some have already commented on this but worth repeating

FFP rules mean that our current maximum bid is about £3m and that's pushing it.
Frustrating because ITFC can afford to pay more but can't

The only clubs spending huge amounts are the related and those like Coventry who have sold for a huge amount, thus increasing turnover

Want to sell Davis?

Good signing will improve here and score goals

trncbluearmy - exactly. Nobody should comment on here (some hope!) without familiarising themselves with FFP. Hence, going forward, the need for player trading. If we sign a player for £10 million it is our guarantee of League 1.
