Town Programme Sells For £1,000
Thursday, 7th Dec 2023 10:31

A programme from a game in Town’s first season in the Football League, 1938/39, changed hands for £1,000 at auction earlier this month.

The programme for the Blues’ away game at Brighton & Hove Albion on October 8th 1938 was sold by Sporting Gold for £1,000 at their sale on December 1st, well above the estimate of £110 - £120.

It’s believed only one Town programme has previously fetched more, a single sheet programme from the Blues’ home game with Crystal Palace from the same season having sold for more than £1,100.

Ive been offered 30 pounds for my 1978 fa cup final programme. I said put another zero on the end and i might think about it. I actually purchased two programmes on the day thinking they might become valuable one day.

Funnily enough, I also have two programmes for the '78 FA Cup Final. If anybody wants them I was thinking about £30 plus TWO zeroes! They must be very rare... as far as I know there are only four in circulation!!!

I have my grandad's original matchday programme from our first ever match as a professional team (which is in pretty good nick. Other than the front and back page are separated [but still complete] it looks new!). The match was 29th August 1936 against Tunbridge Wells Rangers & he has marked in pencil "w" on the fixtures page so Ipswich clearly won, I know for sure this is a genuine programme.

ITFC then decided to join the football league and our first home game was against Southend United on 27th August 1938. I have what I assume must be an original programme from that match too, I say assume as it is in mint condition and looks like it has just come off the press!

There are hundreds, even thousands of 78 Cup Final priogrammes around. They have a limted value. £30 seems reasonable to me if you want to sell them.

Careful 1967. From memory the Southend programme was reprinted & inserted in a matchday programme, presumably in 1988 to celebrate 50 years. Would explain the mint condition!

The reproductions of 1938/9 programmes were a different size to the originals and the bottom border was a lot wider, for reference to originals

I have a 1978 FA Cup Final programme signed by the players of both teams. Any idea what that might be worth?

I remember an Ipswich Aldershot programme from the late 1930s selling for £1,350 at Nick Barber Auctions a few years ago - there were two bidders - one in the room and one on the phone - and they just threw prices at each other £500 - £700 - £1,000!!! se20blue - what would you think the 1978 Man U -v- Ipswich programme (match played on 18/11/78) with the incorrect date of 20/11/78 could make? (there are two other runs of it - one with 18.11 (with the 20th blacked out, and another run with just with correct date of 18/11/78
