Stansfield on Town's January List
Wednesday, 20th Dec 2023 09:42

Fulham striker Jay Stansfield, who is currently on loan at Birmingham City, is among the frontmen the Blues are eyeing ahead of the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old is a player who has been of interest to Town manager Kieran McKenna for some while, TWTD having reported that the Blues made an approach regarding potentially taking him on loan in the summer of 2022 before eventually opting to bring in Tyreece John-Jules from Arsenal.

Stansfield eventually moved to Exeter, the club where his late father Adam played, and netted nine times in League One last season.

The Tiverton-born striker, an England U18, U20 and U21 international, joined Birmingham on loan in the summer and has scored five times so far this season, including one in the 2-2 draw with the Blues at St Andrew’s in November.

Another central striker is an obvious priority for Town in January and Stansfield is on the list of potential recruits with the Blues understood to have made an enquiry to the Cottagers, where head of analysis Charlie Turnbull worked prior to moving to Portman Road.

Quizzed on Town's previous interest in Stansfield in November 2022 ahead of the Blues’ game at St James Park, McKenna said: “We looked at lots of players, know lots of players. We know Jay for different reasons, one of them being that Charlie Turnbull worked with him at Fulham, so he’s one of so many talented young players that we know and it’s good to see him having a good start at Exeter.”

A report at the weekend claimed Town have £3 million and up to £15,000-a-week in wages available for a new frontman, however, it’s believed the Blues have greater scope than that while still staying within Financial Fair Play limits.

TWTD understands Town made an enquiry to the Cottagers regarding Stansfield more than a month ago and remain interested.

The striker signed a new contract which runs to the summer of 2027 in the summer with the Premier League side having an option for a further year.

I wouldn't be surprised if 3 or 4 will be leaving the club in january.
So at least one new striker, most probably two imo.

I am assuming Ladapo will be on his way out, and this is an incredible replacement. Has similarities to Hirst, and arguably better in front of goal. Would be an immense replacement for Ladapo and bring brilliant competition for Hirst up top - although, GH is vital is how we press/play!

An excellent young player with bags of potential but with three and a half years to run on a Premiership deal, he would be massively expensive. I'd love Town to get this player, but I just can't see it given the costs involved (fee and wages).

I can see Freddie leaving and a few others as we are going to need a centre back if we are loosing burgess and Baggott and maybe Morsy

It’ll be an interesting period where a number of changes are very likely ,both in and out .Whatever does occur , we can be certain it’ll be the result of meticulous planning and a great deal of forethought !
KM has planned out the system ,style and general makeup of the ITFC first team squad ,and set the tone for future recruitment and development ,
We shall not see any ‘panic’ buying ;near ,short term and longer term considerations are the metier !

We need Prem quality. Whilst this lad may be very promising, he has never played in the Prem.

We've been around the world and couldn't find anyone I guess

I don't really have an opinion on these kinds of players (I'd never heard of Hirst and his past record was quite poor), I'll just trust KM's judgment.

@WhoisJimmyJuan you beat me to it!!
Seriously though, if there's a couple of players out there for us that can strengthen without imbalancing, then we need to get it done. Without adding to the squad I think we'd achieve more than most of us thought back in June/July, but now we're 2nd we don't want a repeat of 2014-15...

I wonder how many players are on our radar. One thing we’ve learned is that if it’s out in the public domain, it’s not likely to happen. Jack Taylor was the exception but even then MacAnthony had to issue a retraction and denial before the deal was done.

He was good at St Andrews, high energy, aggressive with back up from the Brum midfield we struggled. Hirst has improved a lot this year but needs back up.
Ladapo has shown he does not have the same energy so probably doesn't fit into the ITFC style of play V23/24 good too get a new forward in

In an earlier article KMcK spoke about how our time spent in League One wasn’t the right time to look at widening our recruitment net into Europe and beyond. I wonder if that process is now something the club are looking at. I’m not reading too much into this as we tend to do our business in a lot more professional manner. I’m just so glad the days of “journey men” is a thing of the past!

Fits the model, Young, Hungry Technically good and a good athlete, get him in.

On Barrystedmunds' post, i doubt it fella, I was at the forum and Luke Werhun, Tom Ball and Mark Ashton all talked about the cultural challenges of bringing in younger players straight into a UK culture. I sensed, very strongly, they had been bitten at Bristol City trying to do this vey thing and they will stick with their UK based 4 criteria model for now.

If and when we hit thePL and IF we start looking at one or two older players then we might gamble on the cultural piece, especially with foreign players who are already in the PL. For now, expect those 4 criteria to dominate exclusively

Ipswichbusiness, if you're looking at premier league strikers for £3m can you suggest even one? We need the future, not some has-been journeyman, the likes of whom Naaaaridge signed in Ashley Barnes.

Joshua zirkzee from bologna is banging them in for the serial A side! Reckon the club could sign him for a mere £12-£15 million lol!!

I think that Freddie can still do a job at this level, albeit as back up. His goals to minutes ratio is probably as good as anyone's. I would rather see Jackson moved on.

1) we need to be ambitious. That means looking up the pyramid for players, not sideways or down.

2) we have very little Premiership experience in our side.

3) if we want to not only arrive in the Premiership but to survive and prosper as well then we need that quality of player.

4) yes, I know that finding anyone on our budget will be difficult, but we managed it with Tuanzabe and Williams.
