Gallagher Move Stalls
Tuesday, 16th Jan 2024 19:23

Town’s move for Blackburn Rovers striker Sam Gallagher has stalled.

News emerged at the end of last week that the Blues had been in discussions with Rovers regarding the addition of the 28-year-old.

Town are widely reported to have had a number of offers in excess of £1 million rebuffed and TWTD understands the move has made no progress over the last few days.

Quizzed on Town’s interest in Gallagher on Friday, manager Kieran McKenna kept his cards close to his chest.

According to the Daily Express, the Lancastrians have now decided they want to keep the former Southampton frontman, who is reported to be keen on the switch to the Blues.

If that’s the case, it remains to be seen whether that’s part of an ongoing negotiation process as Blackburn seek to push up the fee.

The ex-England U19 and U20 international is out of contract in the summer but with Rovers having an option for a further season, however, they are believed to be less than keen to take that additional year with Gallagher understood to be their highest earner.

Gallagher, who has also been linked with Sunderland this month, made his first appearance since September as Rovers were beaten 4-1 at West Brom at the weekend, the striker, who had been out with a calf injury, having come on as a sub in the 62nd minute.

Town are targeting two strikers before the January transfer window ends with George Hirst set to miss most of the rest of the season having undergone hamstring surgery, while Dane Scarlett returned to parent club Spurs at the end of last month.

No surprise, Blackburn know we need a striker or Two so they’ll rightly squeeze every drop from a deal.

We definitely need better than what we have, but personally I'm not going to lose any sleep if we don't get Gallagher.

Maybe we will turn our attention elsewhere. Perhaps to Mileta Rajovic. And I wonder if Macaulay Langstaff could step up to the Championship?

Sam Gallagher playing record (according to Wikipedia):
Years Team Apps (Goals)
2013–2019 Southampton 22 (1)
2015–2016 → Milton Keynes Dons (loan) 13 (0)
2016–2017 → Blackburn Rovers (loan) 43 (11)
2017–2018 → Birmingham City (loan) 33 (6)
2019– Blackburn Rovers 157 (32)

So he's scoring on average in slightly less than 1 appearance in 5. Although McKenna must see something in him to be fair. His career stats look a fair way off compared to the quality that Leeds, Leicester, and Southampton have up front. Although they all have the luxury of parachute payments that we don't.

McKenna to his credit, does seem to be able to get the most out of players, though, so who knows?

We've given Kyle Edwards away (which was the right thing for the club to do) so are not scraping about for spare change. We could pay the £1.7 M for him... But we need to ensure his wages don't upset the rest of the team. I'd prefer we paid him less and gave him bigger bonuses for each goal scored.
We shouldn't however panic but and it sounds like we won't. The boss seems to prefer Jackson, so should we sell Freddie anyway if he'd rather be playing each week somewhere else.

Not better than what we currently have in terms of strikers

Sussex, tractor I'm sure he is better than what we have fit at the moment nobody is going to pay 1.5 million for Jackson or Ladapo so that sort of tells you.

The January window is a sellers market.

Wherever we go we are going to have to pay through the nose, it’s as simple as that. Not sure I’d be pushing the boat out for this guy though.

The question is will this be a case of 2015 all over again, or will we really turn back the clock and pull another Marcus Stewart put of the bag? (Though there's only one.... )

Could coby bishop do a job for us? Is he good enough for a promotion chasing championship club? He’s big tall & athletic put himself about & shouldn’t cost as much money & Gallagher if deal doesn’t go through. There is always the foreign league!!

Do we scout in Europe at all? Surely to God there must be some candidates over there.

midastouch Look at Hirst's scoring record even with us. The role in the team is not about scoring a lot.

We need to look at Ramón Mierez playing for NK Osijek in the top tier of Croatia.
Target man with high work rate 184cm 78kg
Honestly could be quality for us. 7 goals and 4 assists in 19 games so far this season.

We need to look elsewhere to compete with the likes of Leicester, Southampton and Leeds. Look at Brighton transfer model. We have to look elsewhere and not get caught paying over the odds for a player.

Ramón Mierez keep an eye out for him.

Any player from outside England will need time to settle and acclimatise to the pace and frenetic physicality of the Championship. Time we have in July but not January.

It seems a minority on here don’t see how we play formation wise. Same people who are also forgetting Hirsts goal scoring record before joining us especially at blackburn where he scored zero goals in the championship. We play a very different style to Blackburn and as such may suit us better. Hirsts role isn’t just about goals it’s about pressuring the back four bringing other players into the game. We have 14 different league goal scorers this season due to the way we play and how Hirst plays. I’ll trust the manager not the minority of FIFA managers on here.

Some of the comments of colby bishop etc are laughable or foreign players. The latters great pre season so they can bed in before the season starts not in jan when we need players to be up and running. And colby bishop and players people chat on about the fella at Bolton Dion Charles is being priced up at 8 million bishop would be in the region of 5 or 6 easily I’ve even heard someone mention sczhmodics at one point who is being priced at 9 million having just signed a new contract. Where do people think this money or risk is worth it with ffp? If we risk it and get promoted brilliant if we don’t then what points deductions?? Get a grip people

I don't know the ins and outs of striking a deal in the transfer market and in all honesty I very much doubt any of our TWTD posters do either! I am however quite sure it's not as easy as "he's scoring goals, let's buy him"!

I agree with Midastouch that Longstaff at Notts County has to be worth a punt. He is a prolific goal scorer as well team player and so lets get him before he goes to Swansea and his old manager. Also get Stansfield now before his price goes up further having added a few more £'s by scoring tonight.

Just a bit disappointed (had to happen at some point) that despite the rhetoric in the Summer and since about planning for this window, knowing we were already light up top, that we had not targets locked down and are now scratching around the Championship for players who can do a job.....but not much more....certainly not the acquisition level we were promised i.e. players who would improve the 1st Team.

I do believe that Ashton has learned from the mistakes made in the transfer market from his time at Bristol, and maybe that is leading to some caution. But in its own way this window is as potentially pivotal as when we were last around the top of the Championship and we did not invest in January under Evans/MM. The League is so tough this year but consider Leeds not getting promoted and an Everton coming down. This could be THE year or we could face another extended period in the Championship. Not a time to blindly gamble, but def not a time to be over-cautious. Here is hoping Ashton has got a plan, the players are lined up, and I can look back on this post as an expression of unnecessary nervousness.
