Hürzeler: Compliments For How They Defended
Sunday, 15th Sep 2024 11:33

Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler was disappointed that his side were unable to take three points from their 0-0 home draw with the Blues but was pleased with the overall performance and had praise for Town’s defensive display.

The Blues claimed their first away point of the season as they frustrated the still-unbeaten Seagulls to a stalemate at the Amex.

“Disappointing,” the US-born German admitted. “I think that my team did everything on the pitch to win the game and we defended good, we had enough chances to score, we were good at counter-pressing.

“We were very dominant and that's why it feels disappointing, but in the end I will never judge my team after results, I will judge them by the performance.

“I think there are still things we can improve, but we try to follow the process, we try to improve every day. It’s still a time where we have to adapt, it’s still a time where we have to integrate the new players and we do it step by step.

“Of course, we’re disappointed [with the result] but with the performance I was happy.”

Hürzeler has previously spoken about his team having a habit of dominating games, especially at home, but without winning.

Quizzed on this given their failure to beat the Blues, he reflected: “We have to create more chances, we have to use the chances that we have.

“But I’m sure long-term if you play with this intensity, if you defend like this, then I’m sure long-term it will be successful.

“You can’t it change [the result] now, you have to work, you have to improve, you have to win the day and that’s the only thing that we can influence now, we can’t change the result.

“That’s what it’s like following the process, following the things that we did in pre-season and already did in the season. Now it’s trying to improve every day.

“We know there will be a tough game, we know that we need to be clean and precise in the final third, then some moments we missed that and therefore we have to use training to improve these things.

“In my opinion, we created enough chances to score and that’s why you can’t create chances in every minute or a big chance in every minute, but we were dominant, we kept the ball in their half.

“We were good at stopping their transition moments. I think they had one transition moment in 90 minutes and that’s a positive thing for us.

“Of course, in the end they defended with 10 men and therefore we need to find solutions.

“In some moments we were getting too wild, we were getting out of our match plan, out of our structure and then it doesn’t work, and that’s a thing we have to learn.

“But again, I think there were enough chances to win this game, so I’d never say it’s our fault not to win this game, but in the end we should just make the goal and then we’d sit here and everyone speaks differently about the game.”

Asked about Japanese international winger Kaoru Mitoma, who played his first full 90 minutes of the season for both club or country, Hürzeler had praise for the man he was up against down Brighton’s left flank, Axel Tuanzebe, and Town’s defensive qualities in general.

“He’s in good condition but today he [was up against] a very, very strong defender,” he said.

“I think one of the fastest opponents he can face, so I think if there will be just a little bit slower defender, then there will be moments where we could even create more chances.

“We didn’t do it, so I have to say compliments for how they defended, with how many players they defended with and the consequence of how they defended. They made it difficult for Mitoma and for my wingers.”

Time will tell in May, but a point at Brighton might yet turn out to be invaluable. We've played three of the top 6 likely finishers and 2 of the top 3. Let be realistic we are learning quickly and grabbing what we can

Speaks well, that could be a KM interview. Seems like a bright young manager and Brighton are in good hands with him.

He’s right of course, they dominated for large parts but that was a great point for us and an excellent performance. The sort of performance and result that can hopefully breed a lot of confidence.

Even Linekar said that given our first four games including two away we did not look out of place in the PL. We know that it takes time to knit a squad together but the goals will come and we may not be far away from our first win. Unlike Burnley and Sheffield United we have looked the part and with new players still settling in there are many reasons to be hopeful and cheerful.

We were superb defensively. But there also a 15 minute spell in the second half, which obviously the bha manager wouldnt mention, where Town were on top. The subs came on, Clarke (brilliant) had two chances, chose to pass on the first and then blazed wildly the second. Hutchinson took on the centre back, ran half the pitch but his shot lacked power. Delap ran the entire length of the pitch, leaving the left back in his wake and hit the post. This was followed by 10 mins of stalemate.

Yes, bha had the first 55 mins, the last 10 mins, and Muric made 3 excellent saves in the first half to keep us in it. But I think this is a more balanced account of the game. Goals change games.....and you didnt score Hurzeler.

COYB!

I don't think he is being very complimentary here at all, with comments like " my team wanted to win" and' they defended with 10 men". Almost sounds bitter about it, truth is our game plan came off and we could've stole it as well!

Brilliant point, next!

Nice to play against some teams with managers who dont whine and complain every time. Good luck to you and your team except when you come to our place Fabian

Yes a great defensive display and once the team gets bedded in we should start being more creative. The right back position has always been a worry for me with no one really being one hundred percent convincing but Axel on Saturday might have solved the problem with a mom display let's hope he can stay fit. The physicality of the Premier league is so much greater than the championship but with O'shea, Greaves and Tuanzebe we are well equipped to cope. Goalkeeper's also come under a lot of physical pressure especially from set pieces this is why we had to sign another keeper. With Hirst being fit again it means Delap can now play for 70 minutes or so knowing we've got an adequate replacement on the bench when he is starting to tire.
