Burley and Holland Discuss New Book on Former Manager's Time at Town
Monday, 30th Sep 2024 17:02

Former Blues boss George Burley and his captain Matt Holland have been discussing All to Play For, the new book covering the club legend’s time as manager at Portman Road.

With a combined total of 913 matches as player and manager, Burley has been involved in more matches than anyone else in Ipswich Town’s proud history.

In All to Play For, the former Scotland international full-back and manager provides comprehensive insight on his time in charge of the club he loves so much.

Holland and Burley talk about the book and their time working together during a golden era at Portman Road.

The book comes in two editions. The standard edition, a high-quality, hardback book consisting of 240 full colour pages packed with evocative images and behind the scenes insight, costs £35.

And the collector’s edition, costing £50, limited to 913 copies, representing the number of Town games Burley was involved in as a player and manager.

George Burley, a name we hold dear,
Led Ipswich with passion, year after year.
From highs in the league to European nights,
He gave the fans countless moments of delight.
With pride and with heart, he stood by our crest,
At Portman Road, he gave us his best.
A legend forever, his story will stay,
For the joy he gave, in every single way.

Long live George Burley, a true ITFC legend in every sense.

Think I prefer your shorter version, but ChatGPT doesn’t do a bad job :) I do like the line “A legend in both boot and suit.” And the last line coincidentally very poignant. Beat the cancer George, we’re with you.

In '78, the crowd did roar,
As Burley marched to Wembley’s door,
An FA Cup in Ipswich hands,
A triumph felt across the lands.

As player first, he made his mark,
A full-back’s grit, a lion’s heart,
But more would come from Suffolk’s son,
His finest work had just begun.

For as a manager, he’d rise,
To guide the Town with watchful eyes,
Through tactics sharp, with vision clear,
He shaped a side both bold and dear.

The First Division's lofty heights,
Promotion dreams in hopeful nights,
Burley’s Ipswich played with grace,
Their rise a thrilling, soaring chase.

European hopes once more revived,
In George's hands, the team would thrive.
Through every match, with steady hand,
He brought them glory, made them stand.

A legend both in boot and suit,
With heart of steel and mind astute.
In blue and white, his name will stay,
Ipswich’s light, come what may.

The best town manager in my time and the best moments! An absolute legend!
To young to remember Robson and before!
John lyall and Mckenna on that same trajectory!
Keep us up and a campaign in Europe he will then become a legend along with the others
