Blues Legend Whymark Dies
Thursday, 31st Oct 2024 16:53

Legendary Town striker Trevor Whymark died this morning, aged 74.

The Burston-born frontman was with Town from 1967 until 1979, scoring 104 goals in 322 starts and 13 sub appearances, famously netting four times in the 4-0 UEFA Cup thrashing of Lazio at Portman Road in 1973. He also scored four times against West Brom in the 7-0 victory and, again in the UEFA Cup, against Swedish side Landskrona.

Inducted into the Town Hall of Fame in 2012, Whymark, the sixth highest scorer in the club’s history, was a member of Sir Bobby Robson’s team which won the Texaco Cup in 1973 but missed out on the 1978 FA Cup final due to injury, although he did appear at Wembley in the Charity Shield defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Whymark won one full England cap while with the Blues, having previously played at U23 level, in a 2-0 victory in Luxembourg in 1977 in which Paul Mariner scored his first international goal and Kevin Beattie played his final game for the Three Lions.

After his time at Portman Road, Whymark represented the Vancouver Whitecaps, Grimsby, Derby, Southend, Peterborough and Colchester, before returning to local club Diss Town, from whom he had joined the Blues. He later came back to Town to work as an academy coach.

Whymark was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s late in 2019 with the family going public with the news in 2023 when son Craig began fundraising for the Alzheimer's Society.

RIP Trevor, one of our legends, memories of him playing central defence after Beattie went off injured in the semi-final against West Ham at Villa Park. The Lazio match was superb, in the second leg if memory serves me well, he scored in that as well before being chased the length of the pitch by Lazio players!

I had the pleasure of playing alongside Trevor for Wortwell in 1991-92 which was one of his last non league playing years. I was young, fit (in the Army) and thought my word what is this guy still playing for, but from the kick off it was clear how well he knew and read the game. A legend in the field and a great teacher as well as a great man off the pitch RIP Trev

One of my first Town heroes; I hope he knew just how much he still meant to so many people, right up to the end. RIP

My first game my dad took me to that 7-0 thrashing of WBA in November 1976...I was in wonder of Trevor in that game, I wanted to be like him!

Sad day for all fans of ITFC and reminds us all that once upon a time we were a great side!

RIP Trevor and thanks for the memories...

Very sad news.
A wonderful player who quietly and calmly just got on with it.
I very much enjoyed watching Trevor play when I first began watching Town.

Very sad - a great player - Ipswich players of that era all seemed to have charisma - Trevor certainly was one.

How very sad.

Like Len, he was one of my heroes as well.
I remember seeing him close by on the pitch when we're were celebrating after we won the first leg of the Texaco cup against Norwich all those years ago (1972/73).

RIP Trevor, and thanks so much for all of the great memories.

Sad news. I was there when he scored 4 against West Brom in 1976 - one of my favourite memories of Portman Road, and I think he hit the post! Will be missed.

My favourite player of all time, an iconic self-effacing player for Town, deceptively good with his feet and his movement, and with seemingly supernatural abilities in the air. I would have loved to have met him, to tell him what joy he brought to my early years watching Town. RIP.

Sad news ,what a player Trevor was.Watched many games with Trevor involved and he nearly always was a 7/8 out of 10 player.Would certainly be worth a lot of money today.
RIP Trevor .

Sad to hear, but also something of a blessing, as like a few other posters I'm sure, I've seen what Alzheimers can do. Condolences to Trevor's family and friends. 104 goals in 335 appearances for the club, we'd love someone like that now. Thank's for the memories Trevor and RIP.

One of the most under rated players of the 1970’s. He seemed to hang in the air waiting to head the ball.Great player and lovely man. RIP Trevor..

He came to the pro game late, being signed from Diss Town aged 19. Unsurprisingly, he took a few years to develop into a first team player & only became a regular around the time I started watching Town. After his 4 goal heroics against Lazio (the Italians had decided David Johnson was the man to watch) Trevor rather naively accepted a trophy from their great rivals Roma & was a marked man in the second leg. He didn't score, but apparently picked up an iron bar with which to defend himself at the final whistle.

I started going to Portman road in the 1962/63 season so I remember Trevor well his partnerships with David Johnson and Paul Mariner were almost telepathic sadly all three have now left us it's going to be a sad day on Saturday RIP Trevor.
