Edmundson Fee and Personal Terms Agreed Thursday, 23rd Jan 2025 23:41 Town and Middlesbrough have agreed a fee for the permanent transfer of central defender George Edmundson, who is set to join the Championship side on a two-and-a-half-year deal, TWTD understands.
As previously reported, the 27-year-old was the subject of two failed bids from Boro, where he has been on loan since August with the Blues activating a recall clause earlier in the week.
The two parties continued discussions, however, and a deal has been agreed with the Blues set to receive £600,000 plus further top-ups, some shorter term, then £350,000 if Boro are promoted and a further £500,000 if they then stay up.
We understand Edmundson has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Teessiders, who are managed by Blues boss Kieran McKenna’s close friend Michael Carrick. His signing looks set to be confirmed on Friday.
Edmundson was out of contract with Town at the end of the season when he would have been able to leave on a free transfer. As he had played for both the Blues and Boro this season, he could only have moved to the Riverside during this window.
The ex-Oldham defender joined Town for around £1 million from Rangers in the summer of 2021, signing a four-year deal.
In total, he made 71 starts and four sub appearances while at Portman Road, scoring once, and was a member of the squad which won back-to-back promotions.

I’m surprised we managed to get them to pay more than £500k, in fact I’m surprised we turned down their previous offer. I don’t in anyway mean this as a slight on George as a player, just that with him out of contract we’ve done well. He’s certainly good enough to play at the top end of the championship and possibly prem and wish him and boro all the best.

£500k is a great bit of business for the Teesiders. Big love to Fridge. Played such an important role for us at key times even though he was always in and out of the side.

He obviously wanted to go there so there's no point in keeping an unhappy player.

All the very best for your career Fridge even if it's at another club. I thought you were always solid for us and certainly played your part in helping the club back into the big time. Thank you.

Once a blue ... part of the more positive history of the club. Good deal all round. A fine player going to play for another very decent man in Michael Carrick who is another very promising young British coach.

An excellent defender with pace and strength who didn’t play as many games as he should’ve done. All the very best.

Agree with most posters. Good servant for the club and good luck at Boro, George. Now, I don´t mean this as a negative, but from what Greaves have shown this far I am not sure he is such an upgrade from servants like Edmundson and Burgess...? Time will tell (not saying I am giving up on him yet, in fairness he has been hit by injuries etc).

All the best George! always liked you as a player, a bit strange how you fell out of favour at times.
