Delap Training With Senior England Squad
Tuesday, 18th Mar 2025 17:12

Blues striker Liam Delap is one of three England U21s players to have joined in training with Thomas Tuchel’s senior squad this afternoon.

Delap’s omission from the party the new boss named on Friday was a surprise to many observers, the 22-year-old instead having been included in the U21s alongside Town teammates Omari Hutchinson and Jaden Philogene.

Now, the FA has revealed that Delap, Southampton’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton have linked up with the full squad for training this afternoon.

Delap is the only one of the trio without a senior cap, Harwood-Bellis and Wharton each having made one full appearance, the central defender bagging a debut goal in the 5-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in November.

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer missed out on training and remains with his club having picked up a knock at the weekend.

This afternoon's session was streamed on the FA's Twitter account.

@wickets Yes your right Kmk has no idea of what Liam Delaps contract is and is preparing blind for next season, dear me.

@Beattiesbavkpocket, sorry but you need to buy a backpocket calculator and it was me who told everyone on here about Phillogene deal and you are right it is same for City with Delap.
So in simple terms, if Ipswich Town want to sell Liam Delap, their asset for 5 years, who next year they don't have to sell, but if they did, simply this is what happens, say Liverpool offer 50 million, Man City do not have to match it, he has a 'buy back clause' which is rumoured to be capped at 40 to 45 million so even if a bid of a 100k came in Man City have an option to buy him back at the agreed fee, so say it is 40 million and we paid 15 for hin then we get our money back and a 25 mill profit.
That means City are then 40 million down, on a player they developed but if they believe his stock was to go up they could then loan him out wait for stock to rise to 60 or 70 mill and make a nice profit. Villa had a matching clause and a sell on clause just as City do for Delap of 20%.
Villa had 30% on Phillogene so sold for 6, Town offered 18, Villa matched it then the 30% deduction was taken off so they paid 13.5 for him then sold him to Town for 20 Mill making a 20 mill profit on a player they developed which for P & L is pure profit, good business all round.

So if Liverpool offered 50 million, Man City can match it minus their 20% sell on so 40 million and Ipswich make 25 million profit, Man City could then loan him or keep him in squad watch his stock rise and sell him on making pure profit again good for their P & L but also he wouldn't be at a rival a mistake they made with Palmer and Morgan Rogers.

If Man City got a transfer embargo and couldn't match and Town wanted to sell and Liverpool bought him for 50k we have to give Man City 20% so that's 10 million so essentially in total Man City would end up with 25 million for a player they developed (15 paid plus 10) Ipswich make 25 mill in one season (15 million paid City plus 25 profit) and Liverpool would get the player.

But at the end of the day Ipswich hold the cards he is an Ipswich Town player signed for 5 years and any fan who thinks we would just sell to make 25 mill this Summer is wrong, I'm not deluded.
Firstly this summer we do not have to sell Delap he is our player under contract.
Is Liam Delap going to score the goals to get us back up, maybe but only scored 8 in 3w in Championship last yearand only 10 so far, including only 2 in 10 games since Christmas but as someone said if he was in a top 6 team with regular service would he score more and the answer we all think is yes. There lies the gamble for Ipswich, do they sell make 15 profit, their 15 mill back they paid and go buy a 20 mill striker and Cajuste say that's 1 option.
2nd option keep him, refuse to sell him in Summer and hope he fires us straight back up to Prem if relegated which is worth mu h more than 25 million to the club.
Or third option do they go with the strike force we have and add maybe another striker or trust in all the goals from them which without Delap based on 2023 is over 100.
If they thought we would have enough without him the best option is to loan him to a Prem club for a fee and they pay his wages with a right to buy at the agreed offer if Town do not get promotion, they could then loan him to any club if Man City did not want the same deal.
It's tricky because 10 goals is not prolific he could fade away, Adebayo scored 10 in Prem last year, this year 5 in 37 in Championship.

So all that in consideration, the best option is tricky. For me I think we keep him. It's only a season and he could be the difference. He is an Ipswich Town player signed for 5 years so it's all up to Ashton.
Right now staying up or getting third bottom is our priority.

It doesn't matter if he scored 100 goals this season he is an Ipswich Town player on a 5 year contract, we do not have to sell him, his contract wasn't written on confetti.
It's up to Ashton, he is an Ipswich player and if Town think he will get the goals to get us back up then he stays, end of, we are building a team to compete and be established in Prem. No different Vardy stayingbat Leicester in Championship.
Why buy a player at 15 million who could go on to be worth 100 million when at the moment we don't need too maybe in Jan or next season if not promoted, we aren't even relegated.

Again Lee James you’re talking about things you know nothing about as the club have not said any rumours just you pal. Villa matched our agreed fee so got first dibs end of. Man City have to match any deal from anyone to get first dibs and that’s that. It’s quite simple you’re making up your own pointless headlines up from supposed rumours same rumours that had McKenna going to Chelsea or Utd at one point i date say! I can’t put emojis on here but I’d definitely put the rolling eyes one as you’re not listening to anyone apart from your own unsubstantiated rumours it’s laughable tbh

Again Lee James the sell on fee is from PROFIT of that sell on fee so if he cost 15 mill and we sell him to Man City at you’re deluded 40 mill that SELL ON PROFIT is against 25 million PROFIT and then the 20% sell on fee IF TRUE would be 5 million we’d either owe city or take off the fee. Again simple math we only owe city 20% of the profit not the WHOLE 40 mill fee

Its a win win for Ipswich whatever happens.

Stay (If we go down) , and he could become a real menace in the championship and help us return.
Sell to a big club for big money, whatever division we are in and we have money to strengthen.
Or maybe even sell to a big club if we go down and then strike a deal to be loaned back to us for a season.

All deals will be beneficial to ITFC.
Things are currently a bit rubbish, but look where we were this time last season. Look at the squad we have now.
We have many new players on 4/5 year contracts.
We are building for the future, this season is a minor blip.

Reuser2000 Delap probably will be 20 goals a season striker in the prem one day,atm he could go to one of the top sides and warm the bench, I don’t think any of the newly promoted sides will want to pay his fee and he might not get game time at a big club. Best for his career to be playing, look what not playing did to Phillips career.

Dissboy, I'm sure Mr Ashton doesn't read these articles (prob to busy counting all his money) so you don't need to keep sucking up to him. Are you wishing for him to whisk you off to Norwich for a fancy dinner in the Q8.

Firstly you just keep contradicting yourself, if I'm guessing according to you then how come what your saying is right (it isnt!) The bit your missing is we have already paid 15 million so by what your saying if we sold Delap as Man City didnt want to match a bid and we got 50 million we deduct 15 mill paid leaving 35 million and we only give Man City 20% of that which is 7 million and we get our 15 mill back and 28 k profit so 42k for a player Man City developed lol are you daft?
Yes Man City have to match any bid minus 20% sell on fee so if we got a bid of 50 Man City would have to pay 40 because 20% less as that's what we would pay them if we sold him not just 20% on profit, what a dumb deal for City that would be that they hand us 28k profit on a player they developed.
Phillogene bought by Hull 6, 20 mill bid recieved, matched by Villa minus their sell on so got back for 12, Hull double money. Villa then have Phillogene they then sell him for the 20 mill making 20 profit on a player they developed instead of 6
Ipswich buy Delap, Liverpool offer 50, minus their sell on 20%, Town get 40 mill so 25k profit, Man City then sell him for 50 mill and make 50 mill profit on player they developed. Jeez simple maths as if Man City said yeah take him if you get 100 mill in 2 seasons knock of 20 mill you spent with add ons keep that well done, and just give us 20% of your 80 million profit 16 mill that gives us 36 million for player we developed and congrats you got fee back and 64 mill profit lol can you see how ridiculous that is, be worse deal in history, only way they get 20% only is if they got transfer embargoed which is still the same as Man City already had a fee Ipswich don't take the money back paid and then give 20% off profit lol.

So if I sell you a prized possession like say an Antique to you for £50 that I inherited but need the money but do say if value increases and you want to sell for £500 I get first refusal to buy back for £450 because I already gave you £50, so the buyer still gets £500 the seller gets £500 so both get £450 profit and the buyer who paid 500 gets the antique whose value could go up to 1k

Anyway, it's boring now, Delap is a Town player on a 5 year contract so the definate fact is we do not need to sell next season, if he is tipped for the top like everyone says then why would we sell him, it tough luck on City we could keep him whatever league while he continues to develop and value goes up, especially if he tipped to be next Harry Kane, he is an Ipswich Town player not a Man City player, we don't need to sell so it's just a question of stick or twist, which is why the best option if relegated is to loan him to Prem club if we think we have enough to get us back up because we could put clauses in so we could loan to say Liverpool with option to buy for minimum 50 mill after one season if Town were not promoted but also a clause on goals for example for every 10 goals after 10 his fee goes up 20 mill so potentially he scores 20 goals his fee is now 70 mill Man City can match it less 20% or we sell and they get 20%.
Or they could cash in this season but that would be bad business unless his value plummeted and he only scores 4 which if only benched is possible too.
It is highly likely they keep in Championship he scores tons value goes up further we go up again and take from there, let's face it Delap is not going to drop in ability, we hold the cards he is our player

Hard to believe that McKenna "is not sure" about the buy-back clause. He's our manager!
Yes, I do understand why he's obfuscating.

It's just when a player comes from a teams academy now because that is 100% profit so really good for their P & L.
So it's like if we sold Woolfenden to West Ham and we are in Prem too and his value goes up, called up to England etc we could do the same thing, it's good business around really these days, it protects the buying club and selling club.
He is still our player of course and ultimately at the moment we don't need to sell for at least a season so better to keep or loan him so he remains our asset his value can only increase you would think and if not and he was dire in Championship then we only paid 15 mill for him.
Not good business for us to let him go yet, if Man City are relegated though and we stay up and they get a transfer embargo even better for us, need get third bottom at least and have to beat Leicester and Wolves, they will drop points and we need to just try keep in touching distance but in reality we need them to lose 4 of nine and us to win 3 and draw 1 and then match their results. We be on track, hopefully West Ham could be really pivotal team for Ipswich, if they beat Wolves and then we beat them at Portman Road the momentum goes in our favour even if Wolves win but a point for us at Bournemouth be handy. We beat Wolves they then have Man Utd and Tottenham, we have Chelsea, Arsenal so really points should be as they were, we then play Newcastle where we would accept a loss and they have Leicester so that would put us as we are now with 4 games each. They need to lose all 4 we need to win 3 draw 1. They play Man City away, Brighton home, Palace away, Brentford home, all four of them tricky games with 4 losses defo possible
We got Everton, Brentford, Leicester and West Ham if we can win 2 draw Brentford it would go down to last day of the season vs West Ham at home. So is possible, hard but possible or Man City relegated and that changes everything the fight is them with Leicester only.
For me the key to getting points now is Davis being dropped for Townsend, Broadhead going in 10 and using Enciso as an impact sub like Sarrimento, playing Hutchinson on favoured right and J Clarke/Phillogene on left and if we go 1-0 up go 4-4-2 take Broadhead off Hirst on, Davis on for left winger and Keep Hutch on right and go 4-4-2 defend and get balls up to the front 2 he has nothing to lose.
I think Bournemouth game is a good game to try it. I still think Muric might be better to go back in but with Townsend on Palmer should do fine as there will be no gaps.
I'd start J Clarke as Phillogene can play either side.
Line up I'd like to see
Palmer
Tunazabe
O'Shea C
Burgess
Townsend
Phillips
Cajuste
Hutchinson
Broadhead
J Clarke
Delap

Hopefully be exciting end to season

@Leejames.......Sorry but forget all the various permutations, we've only won 3 all season, so we're not suddenly going to reel off 3 or 4 wins in succession.
We are down ! And our only hope is a miracle via Man City.
On another note, the current bottom 3 (us included) are the worst in premier league history, at this this stage of the season. The combined points total for the 3 clubs is just 43 the worst ever !

@gforce
It is unlikely, I totally agree but is possible, I genuinely think the club knew that it was a season too soon and used money to buy best in Championship and get the ground and training facilities Prem ready. If Man City relegated then there is that chance and that is possible as is catching Wolves but with only 3 wins as you say a very tough ask and we would definately have to beat Wolves and Leicester.
If we go down, i dont think many new signings come in at all, i think Tunazabe and Burgess get deal extensions, i think we will take up the option to sign Cajuste if he is up for the challenge and another midfielder with experience like a Flynne Downes or Ben Sheaf and maybe a left back like Cresswell because I think Davis has to go unfortunately.
I do think Delap will stay or go on loan for next season.
H Clarke back, Humphries back, Baggott may all get chance in Championship and then I think we will see Burns, Luongo, Morsy, Davis, Chaplin Harness depart as none will be first choice and can't improve the team aside Davis but he just hasn't worked with new signings, but that's on Mckenna, I do think another manager would play him in front of Townsend.
You are right it's in lap of gods, we need to hope West Ham beat Wolves then we do and go from there, I really agree aside I do think if Davis was dropped we could play everyone in correct positions and get a run going, get a goal and shut shop and keep the points.

The points total really does show the gulf now over last 3 or 4 seasons, with same teams up and down, we have been unlucky but Kmck has to shoulder some blame picking Davis non stop but it's done now.
We do have the players to romp the Championship but the gulf in that league is going to get bigger and the teams that yo yo up and down will just continue to do so, unfortunately Forest cheated to stay up in their first season and I think if Sunderland had gone up instead when Luton did or Middlesborough Forest may not have survived last year and now look at them.
We have to hope, and I think they will, that the Prem make an example of Man City and deduct 60 to 100 hundred points and it looks very likely they will and that will stop other clubs breaking rules for success. We have to really go for it and pull ahead of Leicester because if there is the chance it happens we have to be in that third spot and that is very much in our hands, if Leicester beat us to third by a point 2 points that would be what that ref gifted them so maybe the dream will continue and all these mistakes and fine margins in the end Karma saves us.
For me now it's simple drop Davis,Greaves,Ensciso and play Burges, Broadhead and Townsend and if Tunazabe fit the drop Woolfeden for him to go to right back.
