Delap Scores But Hutchinson Sent Off as England U21s Beaten in France Friday, 21st Mar 2025 22:00 Liam Delap netted his third England U21s goal but Omari Hutchinson was sent off seven minutes after coming off the bench in a topsy-turvy 5-3 friendly defeat to France at the Stade du Moustoir, Yves Allainmat, while Jaden Philogene hit the post in the first half.
Delap and Philogene, winning their 11th and eighth U21s caps respectively, started and were involved in a goal after only 90 seconds, the striker heading a corner from the right towards the far post, the ball hitting the wideman and falling to Manchester City’s James McAtee, who smashed into the roof of the net.
However, France hit back twice quickly and were in front by the seventh minute, before Philogene cut in from the left and hit a 15th-minute shot which French keeper palmed away, then two minutes later struck the far post with a strike from a similar area.
Chances continued to come in great number at both ends and France made it 3-1 on 34, then England pulled one back four minutes later, Philogene’s blocked shot subsequently crossed to the far post from where McAtee nodded back to Harvey Elliott, who stabbed home.
Hugo Ekitike completed his hat-trick to make it 4-2 to France in the 54th minute, before Delap netted on 61, nodding into the net from close range after McAtee’s chip had hit the far post and bounced down inside the six-yard box.
Elliott blazed a penalty well over four minutes later before France made it 5-3 in the 76th minute, Delap and Philogene making way as VAR gave the goal the once-over and Hutchinson coming on to win his third U21s cap.
The former Chelsea man’s time on the field was abruptly curtailed on 85 when he was shown a straight red card for sliding in and catching Thierno Barry on the shin with a raised boot, although he had appeared to be trying to pull his boot out of the way and subsequently apologised to the French player.
England's U21s are in action again on Monday when they host Portugal in another friendly at the Hawthorns.

Omari will be cheesed off with that. Was a bit careless

Starting to think Hutchinson maybe needs a bit on bench with Davis and Enciso. Play Phillogene Right J Clarke left and Broadhead in the 10 behind Delap Confidence seems low in Omari but again maybe that's because he keeps being played put of position to accomodate Davis.

If Delap is on the pitch why is Elliott taking a penalty?
Leejames99 added 23:35 - Mar 21
@ramrob I thought that, had a look, last one was Morgan Rogers, before that Gibbs-White took a couple and Rhian Brewster and Nketiah. Looks like Elliot in front of Delap for a pen for now but after that miss I think Delap or Mcatee be on next one. Lots good players in that team.

Shame about Omari s red, but young and will learn, can’t see there being any malice in it. Are there no subjects you can’t twist into a dig against Davis? Give it a rest !

Leejames99. What has happened with you lately? U we're always one of the most sensible and reasoned posters on here. All of a sudden, u appear to have a vendetta against Davis. While i agree to a certain degree that he is a big reason why we concede so many goals in open play, it's not all his fault. It's partly the role he's being asked to play. And yes, personally I'd prefer Townsend to play as hes better defensively. As for Davis affecting Hutchinsons ability to play on the left? He isn't any good on the left. Has only played there once for us and was totally ineffective. Much better on the right. Oh, and as for ur post suggesting Muric should be back in goal? Really? While I've been some1 whos defended him against some of the vile diatribe aimed his way by some, whyvwould u drop Palmer, who has not been at fault for even 1 goal that we've conceded since he arrived, for Muric, whos cost us 8 points through errors. Makes no sense whatsoever. And yes, he's saved us points too in a few games as well, but we cant afford to have any more keeper errors, if we to have any chance of pulling off the miracle needed to stay up. And I say miracle, purely bcse of who we have left to play between now and the end of the season.

@blues1 @dissboyboyitfc I just think Muric was outstanding Thursday night and is the better shot stopper, Palmer hasn't been at fault for goals but he has still let alot in, aside 3 thumpings one in his first game, West Ham and Newcastle, we conceeded very few and were picking up points, so I think he should be given another chance. What games did he cost us 8 points? One mistake vs Man City in which we got thumped, 1 against Brentford but we were playing with 10 men and it was 4-3 and Delap hit post One vs Bournemouth to equalise but we still didn't shut shop for a point and their winner who was at fault...yep Davis just watched goals back and Southampton Muric got blame but shot should never of got through and 2nd goal he made a point blank save and it went to a Southampton player, it happens but that's 3 point. I never said Hutchinson plays on left, his better position is right of course but when Davis plays we have to play him in a 10. Look at last week 3 players in our front 3 out of position Enciso left, Hutchinson 10 and Phillogene in 9 and why because Phillogene they want to cover right back when defense moves over and Hutch in 10 to go right if Philligene goes back and Enciso to go 10 when Hutch moves right and why is all this to accomodate Leif Davis, it worked in Championship it doesn't in Prem he is not fast enough, we shouldn't even have to debate our forwards defending because a defender has forgot how to defend. If Townsend plays then Hutchinson is right, Phillogene or J Clarke on left Broadhead or Ensico in 10 and Delap or Hirst up top that's a very good forward line with subs. If you get a moment go back to the games and look at all the goals conceeded because of fouls or gaps left by Davis it's nearly every game. Palmer made one mistake kicking ball against Cajuste for Forest corner which led to their first goal but you can't blame him as they both were covering the huge gap left by Davis who was down in Forest half. It's not all on Davis as its Mckenna fault keep picking him, surely as a top coach he sees Davis runs don't work with only 2 assists, and why buy Jack Clarke and Phillogene if he wants to play Davis. He has to have a favourite in it was Burns now its Davis. The only 2 maybe 3 who should be starting gamed imo is Burgess, Broadhead and Woolfenden. Think Muric, fans had it in for him since Man City blunder and seen the one last year vs Everton but hindsight is a wonderful thing when you look at all the goals we shipped since Walton and Palmer and I don't blame him for Southampton he was getting abuse off home fans. I just want Town to a least try in these 9 games and that means we need to shut shop but score goals and for me without Davis we have the best chance of that, Muric or Palmer I don't mind with Townsend but I do think Muric better shot stopper and he might just have something to prove, just think he deserves a chance, I'd play him at Bournemouth away and see because they will bombard us and if we lose play Palmer, I just have a feeling Muric might do well. Only my opinion based on stats and facts, Sanchez, Onana, Ramsdale all still in goal.

I am not a Davis hater, far from it but I do believe that until McKenna realizes that we need to defend first we are not going anywhere in the PL. I'm all for attractive attacking football but Town should have adapted, at least at home and gone with 3 CB with two proper full backs to stop the opposition. Davis is only doing as he is asked so you can't blame him.

It is on Mckenna the Davis situation. Need go flat back 4 with an actual right back, Johnson, Godfrey or Tunazabe and Townsend at left, Phillips & Cajuste protecting, J Clarke left, Hutchinson Right, Broadhead in 10 and Delap up top. I think Enciso and Phillogene better as subs as Phillogene plays either side or Hutch ad sub either or. If we take lead I would take off Hutchinson, J Clarke and Broadhead and go 4-4-2 by bringing on Phillogene, Davis and Hirst. Davis in front of Townsend and Phillogene on right as they are better defensively but quick on break , nothing to lose. On another note I wouldn't be surprised to see Hirst start vs Bournemouth so Delap avoids card and doesn't miss Wolves game and I also wouldn't be shocked to see Delap get a yellow vs Wolves and miss the next 2 which are games on paper we lose but beat Wolves and we will have momentum. I see no reason why Davis can't be in front of Townsend in a 4-4-2 Going to need some heroes in last 9 games

Just because Delap takes penalties for Ipswich dosent mean he automatically takes them for England. Anyone can be wise after the event when someone misses no skill in that.
Leejames99 added 20:19 - Mar 22
Linkboy13 Don't think anybody was trying to be wise, nobody said Delap should be taking them for England!

All somewhat irrelevant now anyway - back to Ground Zero in August, and some Big Changes I suspect ! A few shocks for some too, more than possible.

@blieboy1981 As if the club are back to square 1 after being relegated (if it happens) from Premiership which we didn't expect to be in yet and we're favourites to be relegated from. If anything it's set us up perfectly to make an assault on the Prem for stability, we now have a Prem ready stadium, new training facilities, signings who are the proven to be the best in the Championship, a te of internationals, who are young and assetts and all on long term contracts and parachute payments for 2 seasons with no debt. I would suggest we are in a much superior position to most and the club have invested money wisely as favourites for relegation. While we still can catch Wolves we keep going and if Man City go down we may stay up but if we do go down there won't be many changes aside most of league 1 lads going and a few new signings, Mckenna and Delap are on long term contracts and can't just leave, if he was going he would of been sacked by now and as a manager with a family he is better with job stability right now. Delap won't be going unless on loan to Prem or a stupid amount offered and we can add to the squad with his sale. There is definately other strikers at 20 million mark but he will most likely be with us don't need to sell him and his goals could fire us back up and the money from going up is worth way more than his sale. I do think we have good enough front line to add another striker and loan Delap to Prem club like West Ham to keep his stock rising, but don't think he will go top 6 club, won't go to a newly promoted, he just likes playing football, his mates are at Town and he under contract. If anyone thinks there are relegation clauses they are wrong, no club who are favourites for relegation are putting relegation clauses in contracts.

Muric had an excellent game for Kosovo the other night so he has the ability. I believe the incessant criticism by so called supporters is a big part of his lack of confidence. Many are still in love with Walton who to me is League 1/Championship level, I expect him to move on in the summer. Watching the France match revealed to me just how much more advanced their players are technically especially Cherki who hardly seemed to break sweat, an outstanding talent. Makes me wonder where the future England players are going to found because on this evidence we aren't going to compete.
Leejames99 added 15:40 - Mar 23
@cadiar I agree re Muric 100% Re England also France were great, I think as always with England we have talented players in abundance but it's getting them to gel. Senior squad picking Henderson, Rashford etc is hardly progression, I think alot of senior squad will go back in 21s for the Euros this Summer.
