West Brom Sack Mowbray After Three Months Monday, 21st Apr 2025 19:45 Blues legend Tony Mowbray has been sacked as head coach of West Brom after only three months in charge along with his assistant Mark Venus.
Mowbray rejoined the Baggies in January having been given the all-clear after spending almost a year out of the game to undergo treatment for bowel cancer.
The 61-year-old had been in charge for 18 games, winning five, drawing five and losing eight, including a 3-1 reverse at home to strugglers Derby this afternoon.
A club statement reads: “The club would like to place on record its thanks to Tony and Mark for their efforts – but has made the decision to part company following a series of poor results.
“Tony and Mark will forever be welcome at The Hawthorns and their contributions to the club winning the 2007/08 Sky Bet Championship title will never be forgotten. Everyone at Albion wishes Tony and Mark all the very best in the future.”
Mowbray, who prior to his illness had briefly been in charge at Birmingham, had previously been manager at the Hawthorns between 2006 and 2009, leading them to the Championship title in 2007/08.
Albion, 10th in the Championship, have named James Morrison as boss on an interim basis, assisted by Damia Abella and Boaz Myhill while they search for another permanent head coach.
Mowbray and Venus were key members of the Blues’ 2000 promotion-winning side with the man known as Mogga then joining George Burley’s staff and continuing under Joe Royle before taking his first managerial job at Hibernian in May 2004.
Since then, in addition to his first stint with the Baggies and his time at St Andrew’s, he has had spells at Celtic, Middlesbrough, Coventry, Blackburn and Sunderland.

@Leejames99 Why don't you put in for the vacant West Brom managers job? Considering that you know so much about managing a football club and formations, tactics etc etc. Mckenna in 'your' opinion is unless? Seriously what planet do you live on? Yeah ok he has been naïve at times this season, so what. Most of the team wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for him and his man managing skills etc. Give him time, he will come good.

Really sad after all he's been through even though he will get a nice pay off. Met him a couple of times in a well known store in Ipswich (now closed) where his partner worked great bloke very modest and humble. Don't think he's the man for the Ipswich job though slightest thing go wrong and the vultures on here would be on his back he's out of his depth keeps changing the team and other pathetic quotes.

@alphawhisky You see, it's the same people with the same nonsense, who have no response but to say dont read what the troll says or full of BS but nobody puts their point across on how they believe first of all why Mckenna still has credit when he on 6 mill a year and broke all the wrong records and why he is forgiven for an atrocious season And how is he going to navigate past other Championship clubs also yrying to get to the Prem when he refuses to change tactics or players, and even if he did get us back to Prem which players are coming to be in a relegation battle and how does he compete? Especially as most of you seem to think our signings were awful, whose fault is that then? Basically it's another way of blaming Muric and Phillogene rather than Davis and Morsy or Mckenna. Now you saying but we came up too early, well when ever we went up we were going to spend on ground, training etc. You think all out good players will go because Mckenna was allowed to just spend 150 mill on signings but put 30 mill release clauses and relegation clauses in despite being nailed on favourites for relegation, so you don't think much of the club as a business, who just fritter money on useless talent These signings you say we should of got, who? You say we have no overseas knowledge, had any of you heard of Cajuste? If you going to do your lynch mob tactics on me at least one of you explain just why and how Mckenna is the man to bring stability to Ipswich Town in the Premier League. He is lucky he stayed and very lucky not to be sacked, worst records, every other team sacked their managers some worked some never, but their club came first. Too right fans at Leicester and Southampton walking out. Vardy says we were atrocious but Hirst gives us this togerness and learning nonsense. One of you give me, I don't know who the ringleader is, but just why is Mckenna the man and how do you all propose he is going to establish the team, get another promotion with the same players and the same system?

@Leejames99 Personally, I don't think that the majority of players we currently have would have signed if it wasn't for our manager. They all want to play for him, and most signed because of him and the way he coaches. His coaching is second to none, he is well respected by his players and staff. We don't get to see what goes on behind closed doors. I for one think he will bring stability and build a decent squad to challenge and compete next season. Why do you feel the need to sack him? and if so who is your number one choice to replace and get us promoted again? Yes he has made a few mistakes along the way this season, but who hasn't? Even Pep has. Long term we will be fine. We never expected to get promoted this quick, we didn't quite have the set up, players, scouts and coaches etc. The Mckenna managed to temp Delap to come here, and without him we would have probably been rock bottom. And lastly, we don't have a ringleader, I don't know anyone else on here personally. But you seem to have such one sided views and seem to think that you know football better than anyone else on here. That's not having a pop either, you are entitled to your opinion just as we all are. I just think that you are jumping the gun a little bit with the manager. Give it time. He needs another season in the Championship, as do 90% of our squad. We will be a force next season. Write this season off and give it time.

@alphawhiskey Thankyou, at last a decent response with valid opinions to debate, not difficult it's a forum, I've never said I'm right it's just my opinion as I see it and the stats and facts show. I gave a long post yesterday re Mckenna, is coaching has been good in League 1 and Championship but it doesn't work in Prem as results show, Delap was awesome in Championship 18 assists but he can't play that way in Prem because the athleticism of Prem wingers is to quick so it begs the question why Mckenna kept to that way of playing, is it arrogance, stubborness, I'm not sure if Davis is a defender for this division, I see no reason why Mckenna could not play Davis in front of Townsend so we weren't having to worry about him getting back I think Davis, Phillips and Cajuste could of been a strong mid, he hasn't tried anything. I agree players he signed he convinced to come with Sheeran and Ashton which is why as I said yesterday I do not think there is release or relegation clauses for any of them and why I have a strong feeling/hope Mckenna and Ashton knew exactly what they were doing. I think they accepted the likelihood of relegation so planned for next season in the Championship and planning ahead for the future by using the windfall to get the ground and training facilities Prem ready. I think they bought the proven best in Championship with the most prospects who could be moulded into the next phase and I think the players know it. I think he had to play the journeymen from L1 and Championship and they deserved it but it also puy them in the ship window in the Prem so players like Davis or Hirst that we only paid a million or 2 for would now be worth 10-15 mill good profit for the club. I actually think Delap stays I can't see Man City allowing him to go for 30 mill but I'm not so worried as anything will be pure profit and we will go and get another high prospect striker for 20 mill with Haj Wright my first choice if Coventry not promoted or Adebayo who we know scores in Prem. I also think we will offer good money for Championship midfielders with Finn Azaz I think the most easy to get as he is Republic of Ireland player so many team mates at Town already. Cajuste we have I'm told option to buy if so we will certainly take that im sure. The league one lads contracts either run out this summer or next and that's why I think we will cash in and its actually better for them but we do need a good squad not just first 11, so I could see Hirst, Chaplin, Broadhead staying if they are happy to not be first choice. So we do have all the tools from keeper to striker to ease promotion fron Championshipin 1 go with goals all over but I don't think we can do it with the players of the past some have to go. If our squad stays fit it's a goal machine. I do think loans has to be a few older heads, example Will Huges from Palace is out of contract, a no nonsense midfielder but I think Flynne Downes, Azaz or even Jobe Bellingham could all be possible. I think the next few months we will see the true plan of Mckenna and why they kept him and the above can be the only reason and they cleverly used this season for experience and to get the ground etc ready and buy players that without promotion we would never of got. If Mckenna is not willing to change or adapt and goes then I think we have to get a manager with experience, I don't think we are going to have any issues going forward so that's why I think Dyche would be good, he is down to earth and a good manager but tells it how it is and is an honest manager. Knows how to win Championship etc just my opinion. If Mckenna utilises his signings in their correct positions, sells the ones who have served us well then he has all the talent and foundations he needs but for me the Davis, Burns, Walton, Luongo, Morsy need to go unless Morsy is retiring then another season can't hurt with him. I'm happy to see. We can all agree there will be goals next season I just hope we get business done quick so we can have a great pre season I hope I'm right about Mckenna but I feel he is quite a woke manager, and more of a coach and likes analysing etc, I feel he is too soft to manage in Prem but let's see. I dont see us getting another point this season and Leicester will go above us, unless we can get few injured back

Always been a massive mowbray fan but just because someone served us well as a player doesn't mean we should get them in as manager. Stick with Keiran thanks, let's not write him off just becasue he got relegated from the premier league (that he took us too where all else failed) in his 3rd full season ever as a manager. @LJ99 - your first post is ridiculous in the extreme, didn't read any of the others, I've used up all my annual leave, so don't have time. @PhilTWTD any chance of putting in a restriction on characters (like twitter, but maybe a bit more). I am really tired of the LeeJames show. It's getting tedious how it's come to dominate these pages. I can't help but wonder which team he supported before this season...He clearly has way too much time on his hands and has delusions of being a better manager than Mckenna. This 'fan' site could do without the relentless negativity pervading the minds of real fans. Its been a tough season and fans need to stick together right now, to avoid a self defeating spiral of doom and gloom that could so easily take us back to the bad old days we all endured.

Leejames99. Omg. So now you think you know how much Mckenna is,earning. Presumably based on the times paper who's say £6m. Yet the Sun say £5m , the express say £3m. So no, u don't know. Just using the maximum to make ur negative point. As for Mowbray. Yes, he has 1 promotion under his belt. Mckenna has 2 in case you hadn't noticed. What else has Mowbray done as a manager? Nothing, failed everywhere he's been. But you think he's the answer here, just bcse he used to play for us. Somehow I knew before I even got to the comments that ud be saying that. Just another of ur vendettas. Sunday it was Davis, now it's Mckenna.

Sad about Mogga. I've not been watching much Championship at all. I have to admit I pretty much watch the Premiership and whatever league Ipswich are in whether that be League One, Championship or Premier League, so really haven't kept abreast of who's good, bad and ugly this season, but we did take Palmer, Townsend off WBA, and maybe they just haven't got their solidity of the past. He'll get another job no problem anyway. He's a seasoned manager. As for our own manager. @Leejames99 I have to disagree on him being woke or not showing enough emotion. I think he's a very level headed and intelligent manager that we're blessed to have, and I think you're forgetting how the season has panned out and where McKenna showed his anger. After us losing to Brentford from a winning position and having Harry Clarke sent off, swiftly followed by leading against Leicester, having a blatant pen on Chappers waved away, and only seconds later Phillips getting sent off. He was livid. He was boiling up and you heard him come out with the 'small team not getting the decisions' comments and Ashton kicking off with the PGMOL. He was fighting for his team and he was Dr David Banner angry. Yes he's not been angry in his interviews when we were pumped 6-0 by Man City or 4-1 by Spurs, but after getting roasted by Doku and Son, did we see Ben Godfrey again? I'd imagine he showed his anger then behind closed doors. He'll have said Godfrey was still not up to form after not playing much for Atalanta, but didn't roast him in front of the media. His actions behind the scenes and in how many games Godfrey has played since, was plain to see. Has McKenna been too loyal to the League One and Championship players that you speak of? I really don't think so. Greaves & Delap were in from the get go against Liverpool opening day, Muric, Ben Johnson and Szmodics joined them against Man City at the Eithad. By Fulham in the third game Phillips and Ogbene had joined them, and Brighton away O'Shea joined the party and has been ever present in the League. I actually thought McKenna was a bit harsh for not giving Chappers more of a run out at the start of the season. He didn't start til that Brentford away game, when Hirst got his first start of the season too. Luongo started against Liverpool on opening day, and has hardly had a look in since, Harness went out to Derby, Clarke to Sheff Utd, Al Hamadi to Stoke and Edmondson to 'Boro. He's had to work with the team that got him double promotion, and rightly rewarded them where deserved, but was equally cutthroat by bringing in new players when he thought they were up to speed. Has he given Leif too much leeway? Yes quite possibly. When trying to hold on to get a result at Stamford Bridge last week he brought off Leif and brought on Townsend. He knows that Townsend has proven himself the better defender, and he knows that Leif hasn't managed to prove himself of premier standard as a defender. Would any of us have started the season with Leif on the bench, after the magic he's showed the past seasons? We all thought he'd be one of our best performers. Heck I even had him in my Fantasy Football team for half the season! Morsy you bang on about alot, but he's still integral to the team, and of course he's not gonna be Premier standard compared to what most of the teams have. He played against £200 million of CM's in Enzo Fernandez and Moses Caicedo last week, and held his own. We thought by bringing in Phillips that he'd be a dream signing and be the starting CM, but it's just not worked out that way whether because of injury, suspension or form. He played Burns more than he wanted to. Burns showed himself not to be up to Prem standard. I'm sure we and McKenna would have loved him to bring the arrogance from past seasons with him, but Burns had an inferiority complex about the step up& McKenna had brought in Ogbene to play on the right wing as well so he could play Omari as his main man through the middle. Should Mckenna have gone straight to playing Omari on the right and rethink his plans? Yeh probably, but McKenna evidently wanted to make Omari our main number 10 and didn't want him out on the right. Bringing in so many players is tricky. Some hit the ground running like Delap, O'Shea, Szmodics, Cajuste, Palmer and Enciso, but equally Muric, Greaves, Godfrey, Johnson, Phillips, Clarke, Philogene, Ogbene (injury) haven't consistently given the performances to warrant starting spots. Have we spent our money well? Similarly that's been hit and miss as well. We don't have the foreign scouting network in place to pick out the treats like Brighton, Brentford and others do. The one player from abroad we brought in Cajuste has been one of our best players. Hopefully that foreign scouting network will come in the future under the new ownership and new money. What we did do was try and buy the cream of the Championship with the hope it might keep us up, but equally it might make us alot stronger if we went down. Only time will tell if that was the right plan, but I for one am looking forward to seeing Jack Clarke grow as a McKenna player, Philogene fit and healthy to have a summer training with the players under his belt and rediscover his form at Hull, Greaves grow in stature alongside Woolfenden and O'Shea, and Omari pulling the strings. We have to remember we wouldn't have been able to buy Omari or Delap if we hadn't gone up. These are players like Clarke, Philogene who should thrive under Mckenna's playing style and regressing to a Shaun Dyche philosophy I'm not buying. We still have the best young British manager out there. Yes he's been stubborn and made some mistakes this year, but he's learning. That's why he's at Ipswich, and that's why we need to hold him tight and build an era of football at our beloved club that will rival Robson, Ramsey & Burley years.

Fair assessment, in general, Mariner1974, few bits that I wouldn't necessarily agree with but hey, opinions differ and that's life/football right. It's fair to say a lot of the recruitment hasn't worked this year - Muric, no explanation required, the step up for the championship 'starlets' has been vast I.E Greaves/Clarke/Philogene, all way off it, and those already here have struggled, Omari just isn't a 10, and the Davis calls for England's LB answer were bizarre at the time but would be rightly ridiculed now, as defensively, he isn't at Prem level, not yet anyway. I get we had to take a punt, and we'll be markedly stronger squad depth wise as we head into the Champ, but a few lessons will be learnt, fingers certainly burnt there and here's hoping the club looks to utilise the European transfer market next year, rather than being held bang to rights and paying inflated fees I.E adopting a Brentford,Brighton or Bournemouth recruitment stance, buy low, sell high, on the basis that we can source a few gems out there. With Delap likely to go, recruitment needs to focus on: Central Midfield - absolute priority, two new CM's is paramount; Luongo will go, Morsy i expect to start to be used a little more sparingly, Taylor is hit/miss and not someone we're going to build a promotion push on, and obviously the two loan lads will go back to their respective clubs. I like the Humphreys option as a squad player, but don't feel that he's strong enough to start. Striker - either a starter or cover for Hirst, but please, no more Richard Kone shouts or 'we have Ali coming back' etc, we have clout now, we need to think bigger and bolder. Everywhere else, we're fairly well equipped, in the 10 I'd use Szmodics/Chappers, wingers wise we're over subscribed if anything, CB's I expect a Greaves/O'Shea combination to be used with Woolfy supporting.. O'Shea is pivotol and captain in Morsy's absence, both short and long term. Unsure on the RB stance if Axel leaves but we'll see what happens there I guess. Anyway, roll on next season now - it's been a tough year, morale is down, but a good start next year and it'll return I'm sure.

@LeeJames. Check your maths. If Sheff U don't get promoted then it's highly possible there will be FOUR teams with Parachute Payments as Luton are on a real rescue mission to stay in the Championship with Bloomfield that it looks increasingly like they'll win. I doubt they'll be down there again next season if they do stay up even if Top 2 may be beyond them.
