New Waterfront Bar Named in Tribute to Legend Mariner
Wednesday, 2nd Jul 2025 20:24

New Ipswich Waterfront bar Marinero Lounge is named in tribute to Blues legend Paul Mariner.

England international striker Mariner, a member of Sir Bobby Robson’s FA Cup and UEFA Cup-winning sides, died in July 2021 aged 68 from brain cancer.

Marinero, which opened today, is in the former Burtons building, part of the Port of Ipswich back in the day.

“There are two reasons behind this lounge’s name,” its website explains. “Marinero means sailor/mariner in Spanish, but is also a nod to Paul Mariner, an Ipswich Town legend, who passed away in 2021.

“Alex Reilley, one of our founders, is a big Ipswich Town fan, so we thought it seemed fitting!”

Councillor Neil MacDonald, leader of Ipswich Borough Council, is pleased that the premises have a new purpose.

“We are delighted to see this important waterfront building open to the public as a vibrant, new café and bar for both residents and visitors to enjoy,” he said.

“This redevelopment forms a key part of the regeneration of Ipswich Waterfront and it reflects the Council’s strong commitment to breathing new life into vacant buildings and ensuring they serve a positive purpose in our community once again.

“By bringing spaces like this back into use, we’re helping to create a more dynamic, welcoming, and connected town that everyone can take pride in.”

The word "legend" is used too often in football circles but it's genuinely appropriate here

I used to walk past this building collapsed every day on my way to college. Burton's jam factory with a sickly sweet smell. Well done to Alex Reilly & his partners & the council who seem to work very closely with ITFC. Can only be good for the town.

A nice touch to name the cafe/bar after our legend Paul Mariner. Without doubt our best number 9 in history.

Very nice and apt naming! I was just about old enough to watch Ray Crawford while he was here in the earlyish to mid 1960's or so. I'd find it difficult to seperate the two. Very different strikers, but top dollar in their own ways.

Was at the 7-0 WBA win and saw Mariners debut goal…….after that he was my favourite player……and still is for me…..Legend

Google that match and see if you can pick the best goal of the game……

armchaircritic59 I am with you there, Ray was a great player not to take anything away from Paul Mariner. Then of course there was Ted Phillips - people would not believe it today what he was capable of.

Tedray Ted Phillips was a local Suffolk lad and was my boyhood hero. My Grandad used to take me down to watch him practice shooting against a wall marked out with squares. Unbelievable power.

My all time favourite Ipswich player.

My mum made a number '9' out of an old white bed sheet and sewed it on the back of my Ipswich shirt in the late 70's

No name and number shirt printing in those day... Long sleeved shirts too.
What a lovely touch and a great looking bar.

"Id walk a million miles for one of your goals, Paul Mariner"
RIP Legend.

Hmm, if it was a genuine nod/tribute, why add the extra 'o' on the end then? Surely 'Mariner Lounge' looks and sounds the part?

Adding the 'o' on the ends remind me of a Subway footlong for some reason. Or was the whole tribute thing an after thought?

Anyway, on the note of thought - I'm overthinking this haha!

Shefki - sadly my first thoughts too.

Mariner was his name, however, the weather has been scorchio lately.

We’ll find out soon enough if they’re serious about the Mariner connection as opposed to being opportunist Marketeers. If they are serious then we’ll see a few subtle touches of Paul Mariner memorabilia. I hope that’s the case. Either way it’s a crowded waterfront and new outlets need to differentiate - and so Marinero cleverly hits multiple marks - Mariner, Marine, waterside, Spain and hints of tapas, seafood all in one go. Will be interesting to see how it fares…
