McKenna: We Don't Expect Azón to Join the Club This Window
Sunday, 17th Aug 2025 14:53

Town boss Kieran McKenna says the Blues’ attempt to sign Como striker Iván Azón on loan has not progressed and he doesn’t anticipate the former Spain U21 international to join the club during the transfer window.

Azón travelled to Suffolk on Thursday to undergo a medical with the terms of a loan switch having been agreed with the Serie A side.

However, McKenna says the move won’t be going through: “The deal hasn’t progressed, so I won’t say anything other than that, really, out of respect to all parties. He’s not a player we expect to join the club in this window.”

The 22-year-old previously expressed a preference for a return home to Valencia but with the La Liga side not having made an acceptable offer to Como.

Last night, it was reported that Town had made a €20 million (£17.2 million) offer to Danish club FC Nordsjælland for 19-year-old Norwegian international forward Sindre Walle Egeli.

“Nothing to answer,” McKenna said when quizzed on the interest. “He’s a player not from our club. Of course, that’s a position that we’ve just sold a really, really good player, so we’re going to be linked with lots of players in that area.

“It’s an area that we want to strengthen, so there will be different links, but hopefully we’ll bring in the right player as soon as possible.”

Some of our fans really are clueless . How is it the clubs fault this guy isn't signing? All terms, agreed for the loan, and hes travelled over for his medical. So clearly either hes failed his medical, or he himself has, for whatever reason, decided he doesnt want to make the move. So come on, u so called experts . Enlighten me as to what thd clu could do about it? Not happy unless u have something or some1 to slag off.

Striker drought continues, it beggars belief that we can't sign one when other teams can. Kyogo for example, did we not look at him before Birmingham swooped in?

blue1 the club has had 3 months to sign a striker and still we don't have one apart from a very unfit akpom so what's the reason we haven't signed anyone we all knew from January that delap wouldn't be here so had like 8 months to look over strikers and still we have to wait and score no goals

Obviously something with the medical but not ruled out for another window. That’s how I read it. Why make a story from nothing.

Itfc2024. What are you on about? Akpom nowhere near fit. He'll be available pretty soon. Likely next saturday id expect. Why are u blaming the club that he not gonna sign? Club have done all they could over this deal. Clearly its down to the players himself thst it not going ahead. Whether that be his personal choice or he's failed his medical.

Absolutely ridiculous going into the third game of the season with one striker.

We seem to have wasted a lot of time this windows on players not anting to join. AAH May be injured, but equally nowhere near good enough.

Time for Ashton to stop selling and start buying.

Blooos hexis, but theres reasons for both. Neither have anything to do with the club. Terms agreedzm with both, medical taken. Hackney, i believe, his agent has likely told him to hold off on the move, for potential pl interest. Either this guy has failed his medical of has his own reasons forcnot coming.

I agree we need to stop selling players before a replacement is signed cos numbers are short in certain areas but is OK for some fans cos the club is trying unfortunately not trying hard enough

Itfc2024. Clearlycyou haven't followed the transfer window very well this summer if teams like arsenal and utd, to name but 2, have struggled to get strikers in until very recently, why do you think it should be,easy for us, in the championship?

ITFC2024. If he fails the medical, how can he sign?
Some of the nonsense on here baffles belief.
"Won't be signing this window" means he has an injury
Chuba can play up top and there will be others.
And sorry, no we can't sign all our players in June, we aren't Real Madrid!

Blues1, spot on re Hackney. That deal has been on the table and agreed between the clubs since June but info was always going to go to the end of the window, so Yes, if PL club comes in, he won't come. Otherwise, Boro have agreed fee.....Im surprised it broke when it did. Northern press......

Why is it that when we sign players they need several weeks to reach full fitness and then more time to get used to the way we play? Sunderland had 8 new signings in the team yesterday and they beat West Ham 3 nil!

sickparrot that's cos their medical team is good and up to speed unlike ours and I think with Sunderland alot probably didn't have a full pre season anyway but their manager plays them and look what happened a dream start

Don't know reasons he not coming, but we move on. But with 12 days to go that's plenty of time for players to become available. Judge our transfer window after then.

And he's a winger....

I hate all the negativity on here. This might not have happened for a couple of reasons. Firstly he might have failed a medical (this one is more likely since he came over). Also could have been due to international clearance/work permit. I'm sure McKenna and co wouldn't be targeting players from abroad if they didn't think they would gain permits to come over here. But what some people don't realise is that is part of the reason these deals are taking longer. Even more so thanks to Brexit, but anyone that is a national from outside the UK/Ireland will need to acquire a work permit to be able to come over here and if it gets denied then it has to go to an appeal stage which takes even more time. If the player hasn't played much then it's less likely they would get a permit to play over here. Hopefully McKenna and Ashton have a plan B for this situation as I don't want to have to rely on AAH as the 3rd choice as well as getting the lad from Norway in too

People seem to forget that Szmodics scored a lot of goals when he last played in the Champ... and he nearly scored today. I know patience is not a virtue of footie fans but I always say give it 10 games, then you are in a better position to criticise. Up here Boro fans were slagging off their team and manager before the season had even started, now its a case of ' we're going to win the league.' Calm down everybody !

Guthrum you are exactly right. I have obviously never run a football club, but any organisation like this it is going to be complicated and there are a lot of things outside of Ashton et al's control - including the players themselves. If it was that easy the club would have done it
