The Davis Invert
at 10:25 2 Sep 2025

David is forced to play this way in order to accommodate McK’s darlings J Clarke and Philogene although they are pretty much anonymous so far. Pre-season was the time for experimentation not now, how many more games and points are we going to throw away for the sake of McK’s coaching experiments?

More than one Bristol C fan has told me that MA loves to talk big but fails to deliver results. Loves the limelight but goes into hiding when things aren't going well.

Let's see, shall we?

36 apps in the league 4 assists 1 goal scored from the spot.

How much did he cost?

Really. When is he going to drop the useless Philogene and J Clarke?

J Clarke and Philogene are dribblers with no end product. Either they run into a cul de sac, get dispossessed easily or dribble backwards.

What a bloomin' waste of £35 million.

How the f are players such as J Clarke, Philogene, Johnson, Greaves, McAteer, PL quality?

The real PL quality players - Delap and Hutchinson have long been snapped up by PL teams. And even that Hutchinson isn't even Prem ready, more of a sub than a starter at Forest.

At a stretch only Cajuste and O'Shea can cut it in the PL, and just barely.

New signings tbc

Either way, if we (by a miracle) go up, there will again be a massive churn because the bulk of our squad are nowhere near PL quality.

As I was saying on Sat, if our $hit form continues, you'll see the repeat of the scenes at the Valley or the Memorial Stadium during our L1 days in the foreseeable future.

...he would still be down the pecking order because McK would insist to play his new signings. Heck even McAteer will get the nod ahead of him.

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ?
at 17:20 1 Sep 2025

Precisely. For Johnson, PL teams won't want him, not even the newly promoted ones. Championship clubs can't afford him. So we are stuck.

It beggars belief that this is Johnson's first season playing outside the Prem. So far he looks like some lower league signing rather than a Prem stalwart.

J Clarke and Philogene are not new. Not exactly better than who they replaced aren't they?

Is Greaves better than Burgess? Doubtful.

Sunderland signed PL level players from Europe, watch MOTD you'll see the stark difference between their new players and ours.

For is, the problem is the replacements don't seem to be streets better, in fact they are no better or even worse!

McK's obsession with J Clarke and Philogene is baffling.

I have no idea why he continues to stick with these 2 who are consistently underperforming week-in-week-out at the expense of other players.

Glee at the budgies being humiliated and trolled has nothing to do with the discontent and bewilderment of player movements (bar Nunez) over the window.

for us to go up this season....

For all the criticism Cook got as "demolition man"

McK now is no different as "demolition man mk. II"

Getting rid of Chappers, Broady, and signing players like McAteer, why?

And I'd ship Philogene out on loan, hasn't proven himself, how long more do we need?

The stamp on Jens. Can the club bring an action against Travis?
at 22:40 31 Aug 2025

It is

I am not sure but I suspect the courts are reluctant to get too involved in regulation of sport as they see it as the purview of the FA or whatever sporting regulator that sport is under. Boxing is even worse, people have been killed in bouts but you don't see the courts getting involved or any boxer being charged with manslaughter.

What exactly the threshold to make an act on the field criminal is also not easy as it is challenging to use an objective standard due to fan bias. It is very different from say, beating someone up on the street, molest or murder.

Intent is also very difficult to prove in a sporting context most of the time when the foul is committed as part of a tackle - in R v Davies it was clear because the player ran up to his opposite number and punched him in the face before taking a free kick. Remember, Keane was only retrospectively charged after his memoir came out where he (stupidly) admitted his intent to injure Haaland. The ref wouldn't have known his intent in that split second when he committed the foul, much less the police or the CPS.

It is possible, but the threshold is very high in contact sports

Probably needs to fulfil

1. No provocation by victim and
2. Deliberate assault
3. Reach the minimal threshold level to be criminal

The second and third point is hard to prove, especially in competitive sports like football where fouls are committed "in the heat of the moment"

See R v Davies [1991] Crim LR 70

Fractured cheekbone caused by one player punching another while taking a free kick resulted in 6 months imprisonment

Keane's foul on Haaland probably would have met all the criteria and sent him to jail should Haaland have made a police report or taken private action against him. CPS obviously didn't bother to take note. Travis' kick last night, not so clear cut.

If McK wanted him to stay then why the reluctance to play him?

Same as the Broady situation

And it’s not as if their favoured replacements are a class above

If I was Woolfy/Broady I’d be pushing for a move too

How long do we keep going with the ‘new team has to gel’ gimmick?
at 20:00 31 Aug 2025

B0ll0cks.

Have you watched the Sunderland PL games this season? 7-8 new players in their starting XI and look impressive. None of this sideways and backwards aimless tippy tappy to nowhere

Leeds has 5 new players in their starting XI at St James Park. They drew 0-0. We lost 3-0.

You tell me the new Sunlun and Leeds squad have plenty of game time together so far?

"Gelling" is pure bs.

I have a feeling that Nunez could be pushed to play as a 10 if needed. If Chappers or Szmodics have an off day then there's plenty of options now.

Rotation is key, not flogging the same underperforming players week in week out

Sunderland MOTD highlights
at 10:25 31 Aug 2025

Like it or not you have to admit that our recruitment was $hite last season.

Le Bris with his French / European connections has managed to sign much better players for less than what we did.

I don’t see them having a problem with “gelling” as well

If they stay up questions will be asked of McK and MA

They were in L1 just a season before us remember
