Walton Signs New Deal
Tuesday, 29th Sep 2026 15:01

Town keeper Christian Walton has signed a new deal which runs to the summer of 2029.

The 30-year-old former England U21 international joined the Blues from Brighton initially on loan in the summer of 2021, making the switch permanent the following January.

The Wadebridge-born number one, who only signed a contract running to the summer of 2028 in January, went on to be a part of the squad which won three promotions in four seasons and in total has now made 136 starts and two sub appearances for Town.

“I am very pleased to have signed a new deal at the club,” Walton said. “As I think all supporters will know, this club and the area means so much to me and I’m incredibly proud of everything we have been able to achieve together over the last few years.

“To win promotion and then represent Ipswich Town in the Premier League once again is one of the highlights of my career so far and I’m excited to have extended my stay here for a further season.”

Manager Gary O’Neil added: “We’re pleased Christian has agreed a new deal with the club.

“He has obviously achieved so much here during his time as an Ipswich player and has showed himself to be a strong member of our goalkeeping group, so we are delighted he will be with us for an extended period.”

Walton, now the longest-serving first-team player, returned to the Blues’ Premier League starting XI at Everton just prior to the international break.

Deserves his new deal. Has never let the team down is probably a little bit underrated.

Good news.
I still feel that it was the one position that we were ok with for the new season. Certainly didn't see the need for the two Dutch guys. Maybe it'll work out well though in that it's fresh competition and drive them to each be that little bit better.
Am happy Walton is staying and his contract has been extended.
I like him as a keeper.
One each of another LB and a RB in January and there will be little excuse for not staying up....it's been an awful long time since Town had as talented a squad as what we have at the moment.

Congrats to CW on the new deal. I don't have a crystal ball, so I don't know how it's all going to work out. I do however know that the goalkeeping position has become something of a poisoned chalice here in recent times. It's far too important a position to keep messing around with. Let's hope we have a genuine PL class keeper and a very reliable back up ASAP, whichever of our keepers fill those roles.

Im not disappointed, just a bit bemused with this. Since getting to the PL 2 years ago we have bought 4 keepers to strengthen this position, a clear sign to me that the football club do not rate CW as OPL first choice.

When VO comes back from loan, Chris will probably be third choice, and if he becomes 1st choice this season i give us little chance of survival. Just look at his distribution at Everton.

As fans, we have to get behind Scherpen and hope his confidence returns. Im sorry, but one position we cannot afford mediocrity is between the sticks. We have spent lavishly elsewhere, I fear we may need to do so again, hence the surprise.

Undoubtedly meant to be.
He’s got every attribute all the other keeper in the PL have.
Fundamentally as good as half the keepers at the top.
