Walle Egeli Admits Frustration
Wednesday, 30th Sep 2026 16:47

Blues forward Sindre Walle Egeli admits it’s been frustrating to be left out of the Town side during the early weeks of the season.

The 20-year-old, signed from FC Nordsjaelland for £17.5 million in the summer of 2025, then a record fee paid by a Championship club, made 18 league starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring four times, in his first season at the club.

But this term, 10 minutes off the bench on the opening day against Sunderland has been his only involvement in the Premier League and he has been left out of the 20 for the last three matches.

He did, however, start and score in the 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Leicester City and came on as a sub in the 4-2 defeat to Arsenal in the subsequent round.

The attacker, who netted a hat-trick playing as a number nine for Norway’s U21s in a 6-1 thrashing of Bosnia & Herzegovina yesterday, says he knew that securing a place in the team wouldn’t be easy this year.

“It was an amazing feeling to win promotion, but you don't go into a Premier League season without having to fight for your spot. I knew there would be stiff competition,” he told Nettavisen.

But he admits it’s been tough that he hasn’t been involved at all in the league since the opening week.

“It’s been frustrating that it happened so suddenly, he continued. “I’ve essentially been completely out of the picture since then.”

He says in England it’s not always explained why a player is left out but he has spoken to the Town management.

“I wouldn't say it’s a colder environment [than in Norwegian football], but you have to deal with it yourself; you don't get told - you have to go and ask the coach yourself,” he added.

“I’ve had a chat with the coaching staff. You just have to go and talk to them if you feel things are a bit unfair. They were very honest and open with me when we spoke.

“They explain that it’s about more than just who has performed best in training or matches; it’s about how they anticipate the game unfolding, player profiles and the opponent.”

He added: “But it’s a competitive situation, so you just have to keep working and prove you’re good enough.

“You have to do the work yourself. I want to give it my all in training, put in some extra finishing practice and keep the intensity high.

“I didn't want to arrive at the national team camp in poor form. You just have to keep working, because things change quickly in football.”

Despite his lack of involvement, he says the once-capped full international has no thoughts of looking to leave the club.

“Absolutely not,” he said, speaking to NRK TV. “I signed a five-year contract there and I’m still really enjoying it. The day-to-day training is fantastic and I play alongside so many great players, so that’s not on the cards for me.”

Walle Egeli, the all-time top scorer for Norwegian youth teams having netted eight goals in seven games so far in their successful European Championship qualification campaign, more than anyone else in the competition, with one match still to play, revealed an aspect he’s been looking to address.

“Body language is something I’ve tried to work on for many years now,” he said. “Sometimes I might show a bit too clearly that I’m annoyed off the pitch, but on the pitch, I tend to give that little bit extra. I think most people can tell if I’m not exactly happy.

“People point it out, from agents to family and those who know me well. In England, they place great importance on contributing to the group and not being bad for team morale, even if you aren't in the line-up.”

Reflecting on developments at Town since the end of last season, he added: “There is a huge difference in the entire club compared to the summer. It’s almost like arriving at a new club — new manager, new teammates and, really, everything is new.”

Norway U21s complete their qualification fixtures when they host Israel in Stavanger next Tuesday.

Looked handy pre season, would be good to see him off the bench a bit more

Needs to be more aggressive. Has a lot of talent but haven't seen much fight from him.

He is still young. The arrogance is good.
It shows confidence.
But he has to learn patience and application.
He can do it I am sure. If you are good enough you will succeed.
I look forward to him blooming eventually. He has so much potential.

I feel for him I really do, he is obviously a real talent with a bright future, I know squad rotation is part of the modern game, but I would have expected to see him get more game time and be tried where Denmark play him at No9, not stuck out on the wing, he s not winger. I hope he gets a run in the side soon, which will help his confidence.

Umm, he plays for Norway, not Denmark!

Unfortunately you havent warrent being in the team tbh . Performing well in friendlies dont give you a right to be in the team .
When he was in the team yes out of position but still in the team . He looked lost . And got confused when he needed to run at a man .

He needs a few loans and he may be there then . But hes a long way off prem quality as of yet
Just being truthful

Wasn’t up to it to be a regular Championship starter and I doubt things have changed since we got promotion.
A good squad player though.

Just keep working Sindre, the club must have seen something fairly special to splash out the money they did at the time. Just make sure that when the chance comes, you are ready to grab it.

He has seen the standard required for the Premiership; he just has to prove himself in training to GON then the door will open. His time will arrive.

Definitely has talent but does anyone know what his best position is? It says he scored a hat trick for Norway playing as a 9 but I haven’t seen him play there for Town. RW definitely doesn’t suit him.

What ever position he plays he needs to show far more work rate . Managers don't like players with half hearted attitudes.

How will we know if he’s the next Erling Haaland (as he’s been called) if he doesn’t play? Surely with Fatawu banned, Sindre should at least get on the bench.

Ouattara is a far better prospect not been at the club long and already looks Premier league quality.

The truth is he was barely good enough for the Championship (let alone the Premiership), so was expecting and hoping that he'd go on loan to get some minutes and confidence. As is, he is our biggest bust of a signing if you'd exclude McAteer.

I will admit I found Egile frustrating last season,
cant see a lot of Championship clubs breaking down the door down to sign him on loan at Christmas

Keep plugging away Sindre, your time will surely come, and we will enjoy your talents when it does.

Was very poor last season and certainly doesn't warrant a place in the starting eleven. I'd really have no idea as to what his best position would be.....definitely not wide right, where hes been very ineffectual and lightweight.

Lad could definitely benefit from a loan somewhere really.

still a young lad. The best left foot in the squad. Need to work on his fitness and hes there. He will get his chances soon.

Slightly concerned about GON and his coaching team's people management, if it's true that they never proactively took him to one side to explain why he had been omitted from the matchday squads

Maybe i need to go to specsavers but i see a player that is not putting in the required effort to warrant a place in the team.

So he is on his second Ipswich manager and been unable to nail down a starting place in the Championship let alone the Premier. But he is young and it is incumbent on is to develop the lad. Whether he or the Club runs out of patience first remains to be seen, but pre season was encouraging, so have my fingers crossed as he could be a weapon....do feel good issues are mental more than physical so a little more maturity could help.

He doesn't have the physical attributes that we require to be a striker in the Premiership unfortunately.

I think a loan is needed personally, but as he is a squad freebie due to age and doesn't need registering, I am guessing he is there for squad cover.

McKenna played him on the right
He is left footed he was always going to cut in and defenders knew it
He was played out of position
He said he was a 10
Played in midfield in the friendlies and did well
He played at no 9 for Norway u21 so I hope Gary O’Neil (notice I have the time to spell it correctly:)
Is at least considering these options because so far our 9s haven’t set the world alight
They are giving 100% but not scoring as we would like
Keep the faith there is a great footballer in there waiting to come out
