![]() Wednesday, 30th Jun 2004 11:35 Released Manchester City central defender Gerard Wiekens is once again being linked with a move to Portman Road. Wiekens was highly rated by Town boss Joe Royle during his spell as manager at City with his name often mentioned in connection with the Blues over the last couple of years. Wigan are also reported to be interested in the 31-year-old Dutchman who was brought to Manchester City by Frank Clarke in 1997 and also played under Royle and Kevin Keegan. Wiekens was a key member of Royle's side which went from Division Two to the Premiership in successive seasons before relegation back to Division One. Wiekens, primarily a central defender but also a holding midfielder, was popular with City fans but less so with Kevin Keegan who has not offered him a new deal. Hailing from Oude Pekela, Wiekens previously spent seven years with Dutch side Veendam.
