Ex-Town manager George Burley has confirmed that he is leaving Derby County. The Scot cited an "an ongoing issue" which could not be settled amicably as the reason for his decision to resign.

Burley released a statement this morning announcing his departure from Pride Park after just over two years in charge: "It is with great regret I wish to announce my decision not to continue as manager of Derby County Football Club.

"It has been an honour and a privilege to work for this great club and to have enjoyed a memorable relationship with such special fans.

"However, as a result of an ongoing issue which has proved impossible to resolve, my position has become increasingly untenable.

"I hope that the club can continue to build upon the considerable progress which the team has achieved over the last two seasons, and I wish the club every success in the future."

The Derby board brought in director of football Murdo Mackay last summer and sold Tom Huddlestone to Spurs in January, both against Burley's wishes, and the manager admitted recently he was unhappy with a number of aspects of life with the Rams.

The recent speculation regarding Burley's future has seen him linked with a number of clubs currently without managers, including Millwall and Hearts.

Intriguingly, Sir Bobby Robson has been in talks with the Scottish Premier League side, with suggestions that he may become their director of football with a younger man coming in as manager.
