Garvan Makes First Senior Irish Appearance Tue 20th May 2008 08:57
Midfielder Owen Garvan made his first appearance for the senior Irish side as a sub on Monday evening as Giovanni Trapattoni's men defeated Lagos 3-1 in their second training match in the Algarve. Fellow Blue Alex Bruce was also in the side.

Defender Alex Bruce was in action with Ireland on Sunday in a training game against Portuguese side Portimonese. Bruce played the full 90 minutes of the match which ended 1-1, but fellow Blue Owen Garvan was not involved.

Owen Garvan and Alex Bruce are off to the Algarve today with the senior Irish squad for a training camp. The travelling party assembled in Malahide, Dublin on Wednesday where they held their first training sessions with new coach Giovanni Trapattoni.

Boss Jim Magilton joked that he would have strangled matchwinner Danny Haynes had Norwich City managed an equaliser in Sunday's 2-1 victory over the Canaries at Portman Road. Haynes created the first and scored the second for the Blues, but missed a succession of very good chances after the break.

Town midfielder Owen Garvan has been named in a preliminary Republic of Ireland full international squad of 40 players for a training camp in the Algarve and friendlies with Serbia and Colombia in May.
