Well what was that?! I cannot remember a more bizarre game at Portman Road.

A fantastic evening for football, a lovely temperature, and after a few pints in town it truly felt like the summer close season was approaching as we arrived at the ground with the flood lights still unlit.

The pitch was looking hugely improved, with more grass and the barren patches of late less prominent.

I was pleased to see JET and Nouble starting, the Keek boys potential to combine is something to look forward to next season. I assumed Murphy up front and JET on the right. But soon JET was to be called into the middle again to help Hyam.

Palace had brought a good following of over 1000, and the Eagles started as they meant to go on. Excellent passing, movement off the ball, options and close control. Yes Delaney had some errors but overall his control and body shape was unbelievable - he looked a different player to the one we had seen at Portman Road. I had been keen on Holloway as a manager at Town, and really they dominated the game in terms of skill and finesse - but as with the second half of their season, Palace failed to be effective. We were woeful in possession, I cannot remember any real passages of passing, few corners, aimless long ball was common and our ability to hand over possession was incredible. But we took our chances.

Edwards, NDaw, Murphy (although good at defending set plays) were quite poor at times. Murphy and Edwards pace really letting them down. NDaw just cant pass at the moment.

But do you know what! there was something to behold and potentially to get excited about beyond the 3 goals (2 terrible errors from Palace and one wunderstrike from Cresswell) - POWER and ENERGY from Ipswich. Palace could not handle our physicality and closing at times. And if only we could combine with a little more control and passing, we could build something good under Mick. There are 4 things I will take from the game:

1. DEFENCE - they were sensational tonight, Stearman came a close second to Hyam for MoM (the naivety of voting for Nouble - sigh). Stearman had one of the star players in this low quality league in his pocket. Smith was so cultured and dominant, and his blocks with Chambers meant that for all the possession and intricate play from Palace they never really threatened. Loach had for me one of his best Town performances. Good punching, good saves and better distribution (and some nice banter with the North Stand).
2. POWER - Nouble, Stearman, Hyam were just too strong at times, and Palace panicked and destroyed themselves, if only we had been better in possession we cold have made this difference count even further. We never pressed home further this advantage, indeed 2 goals came from moments when someone took a deep breath and found a pass. WE NEED MORE COMPOSURE.
3. YOUTH - Smith, Cresswell, JET, Nouble and MOM Hyam, were key to getting something from a game where Town were outplayed. Hyam's workrate was sensational. Smith is class, Cresswell's goal was sublime but he also defended sharply. JET although forced into more holding and closing than usual still was the only player to actually take a touch - we need him to have a good season next term. Nouble has now scored 2 which is fantastic. He still messed up a few touches and missed a golden chance to release Murphy - but he took his goals very well and was composed.
4. MIDFIELD - we are desperately in need of change in this department, NDaw, Edwards, are not good enough and with Hyam sitting deep, we are holding the ball and passing to any great effect. Thanks god for our great defence. I had heard bad things about Wordsworth, and he looked weak in the appearances I had seen, but at least when he came on he showed some finesse and made time on the ball.

So still a great night at PR, and surely we are safe, albeit Mick will continue to grind results until 100% sure. But as Mick Mills said we've rode quite a lot of luck, have so often been outplayed (yet another example tonight) and our midfield needs an overhaul.

But avoiding relegation was the mission, and we are close to achieving this goal: its just not been very pretty, but it HAS been very determined - if Mick can combine the power with some passing, then we could have something to look forward to next term.
