Ipswich Town are currently facing one of the most challenging periods in the clubs 143 year history. Not only are they facing a global pandemic that has provided businesses all around the world with enormous challenges; Ipswich also sit in 11th position in the third tier of English football, the joint lowest place the club has been in since 1953. A combination of the two has created:
1) A dejected fanbase who feel helpless to impact the current situation as they have nowhere to go to vent their frustrations.
2) A negative atmosphere surrounding the club, which has attracted attention from the national media (The Guardian and TalkSport being two examples).
After 20 years of steady decline any fanbase would struggle to find ways to be optimistic. However, Since the 2010-2011 season Ipswich have still managed an average home attendance of 18,156. That is an enormously impressive number considering throughout this period Ipswich fans have experienced no promotions and suffered relegation, showing the remarkable loyalty of Ipswich supporters. To further demonstrate the devotion of Ipswich fans, they sang their hearts out immediately after relegation was confirmed in 2019, with lyrics such as “we support the Ipswich if we're down or if we're up” ringing around the stands. Most clubs supporters after their teams have been relegated would be giving their players a barrage of abuse, not Ipswich fans. However, the long standing patience from Ipswich supporters is being pushed to the limit.
Excellent efforts were made by Paul Lambert to fix a fractured fanbase that had lost the desire to support their team, after a torrid spell with Paul Hurst. Lambert, managed to galvanize a large number of the fans together and bring them back inside Portman Road due to admirable PR. However, all that work he did when he first came in has now well and truly been reversed, due to a number of different factors:
1) Consistent denial of poor performances from his side.
2) Banning one of the most liked Ipswich journalists Phil Ham (TWTD) from press conferences, for something that was entirely out of Mr Ham’s control.
3) Refusing to talk to the press, which is one of the most crucial parts of a manager’s job to interact with the fans. Especially at a time like this when we need that communication most.
4) The most important factor of all, the poor results which have left us in our joint lowest position since 1953.
A significant number of supporters gave Lambert another chance this season after his two prior seasons in charge had seen us relegated from the Championship and finish 11th in League One. Still, the same issues we have seen throughout his tenure are showing themselves again. For example, the inability to create chances. We have 16th lowest expected goals in the division, surely after over 2 years at a club you would be able to improve that. Again, Ipswich are unable to beat sides around them, losing 9 out of the 9 matches they have played against the top 7; after having the same problem last season. You have to be able to beat the sides around you to achieve promotion, which is an absolutely must for Ipswich Town.
It is blindly obvious that things can not continue as they are, even if by a miracle Lambert managed to turn results around, the relationship with the supporters is utterly shattered due to his churlish behaviour. The management team is treating supporters like fools, who in their right mind could claim we deserved to draw against Peterborough on Tuesday, or when we lost 1-0 at home to them and Lambert claimed “we were really good”, if that was really good then there is no hope for this football club under him.
Paul Lambert is not the man to take Ipswich Town FC forward, as he has created an untenable relationship between him and the supporters, it is time for him to depart the club. However, there is still time left in the season for our fortunes to change. If Ipswich appoint a new manager now we can still achieve promotion as the squad we have ought to be capable of fighting for the top two in this division. If this change is not made quickly, it will be League one for Ipswich Town again next season …. It is that obvious.
