People that don't rate Holy
at 11:45 29 Jul 2020

It was touched upon above in the comments, but I think it's ultimately down to his poor distribution. Lambert's game-plan last season, from what we could make of it, ultimately came down to direct football - particularly against the better sides in the division. Holy's kicking was pretty abject. If you look at the kicking from other goalkeepers in the top 8/9 last season, they were generally a lot more consistent.

I think Holy is a decent, solid goalkeeper at this level. As you say, he has a commanding presence and is good in the air. He does make mistakes, more than what a top keeper in this division should arguably be making. The question is whether you can get promoted at this level with him as your first team starter. Due to deficiencies elsewhere in the team, and the fact the club is pleading poverty, I don't think we can afford to sign a ready-made, reliable replacement. Other areas in the team (such as left-back, centre-back, and out wide) require reinforcements. The fact Lambert and the team are trying to identify a second-choice keeper, that can provide competition for the second season running, suggests to me that they're not completely sure Holy is the right fit.

Any decision that negatively factored into our administration, such as redeveloping the North Stand, is as good as answer as any.

Knowing what we know about Tony Mowbray's managerial nous and record, I'd be tempted to go back in time and give him the permanent job after Burley's sacking. Tue, we would've missed out on two enjoyable campaigns under Royle, but arguably our longer-term health would be better. Imagine giving Mowbray several years to sort us out and potentially be the next Burley.

I mean, we could go back and stop the likes of Keane and Jewell being hired. Somebody other than Hurst being hired as well - although by that time the decline was well and truly underway.

I think there will be a bit of churn at the back this summer. Garbutt gone, Earl likely gone, and then both Wilson and Chambers are the wrong side of 30. Wolfenden is at risk of leaving, as you say, although I think we need to show a bit of ambition next season and retain one of Downes or Wolfenden. I’d argue Downes is the more complete player and due a move up a level. We also have options in midfield, whereas in central defence — Wolfenden is really the only first-team ready player we’ve got who can play in a more attacking, ball-on-the-floor system.

Midfield is tricky to get right. As you say, we need a holding player and that’s a position where we’ll need improvement as per my preferred formation. In my opinion, if we can get a decent fee for Dozzell, we should look to cash in. Someone a little more readymade would be preferable if we’re doubling down on the likes of Dobra, McGavin (great shout for cover), and Lankester elsewhere in the team. Bishop is a gamble, but I’d like to think Judge could still do a job at 10, with more attacking players around him and an emphasis on keeping the ball on the floor. Our tendency to boot balls long in recent months hasn’t made many of our midfielders look good, and I think Judge has been affected the most from this.

I’ve got no real issues around the need to get a physical target man in the squad, as a plan B would be good - and we don’t have anyone in the squad that fits a direct style. I would prefer us to bring in a quick striker with more composure in front of goal. A more clinical Jackson — in effect. Easier said than done though.

The most consistent players this season have been Wolfenden, KVY (in the few games he’s played), Garbutt, and Downes. You could argue that the likes of Holy, Chambers, Huws, Jackson, and Norwood have had decent seasons. Although the strike force has come in for justified criticism in recent weeks. We will likely be without Garbutt, Earl, and Downes next season. Possibly Wolfenden, but we should try and get another year out of him at this level, if the owner resists the urge to cash in.

If we want to play an exciting style of football, then we’d need to phase out the likes of Wilson, Chambers, and Skuse. Therefore, my team for next season (assuming we sell Downes and retain Wolfenden) would be:

Holy
KVY — Wolfenden — New signing — New signing
Huws — New signing
Lankester — Bishop — Dobra
Norwood

A new left back and a new centre back would are key. We need to cut down on squad numbers, especially with SCMP restrictions next season. I’d offload Norris, Chambers, Donacien, Earl, Garbutt (no choice), Skuse, Downes (deserves another chance in the Championship), Dozzell, Rowe, Nydam, Drinan, and Keane. We’d use the academy to give opportunities to fringe squad players and then use what money we’ve got to identify a first team centre-back, left-back, defensive midfielder, winger, and pacey striker.

Where to live in the UK?

For Stowmarket in Suffolk:

Spacious: 7 (new houses being added all the time, but you get good value on the housing market compared to most of Suffolk)
Modern feel: 2 (recently got a McDonalds)
Vibrant: 4 (approximately 15 pubs. Some — Gladstone’s, Walnut, Little Wellie, Crown in Stowupland — are better than others — Queens, Oak, Willow. Terrible clubbing nightlife)
Safe: 8 (as long as you don’t deal drugs or stare at some of the locals for too long, you’re fine)
Culture: 3 (Museum of East Anglian life and a couple of churches. Good leisure centre and the football and rugby teams are doing well)
Nice Views: 2 (if you like traffic congestion and Big John vomiting outside a Domino’s, boost to a 5)
Easy access to different types of environments: 7 (great train links, admittedly. Bury St Edmunds is nice)

Total score: 26
