Quite an interesting poll regarding support for the royal family/ monarchy.
at 18:23 18 Sep 2025

I’m in the ‘republic’ camp but realise that at the moment, I’m in the minority.

I would limit the royal family and tax all of their assets like a non-royal. I would also like to see their finances being accountable to the last penny. But for privacy I would allow a personal allowance of £150k which is theirs.

The poll in question is a few days old but it makes for interesting reading - support for the royal family seems to be declining. I’m not expecting the country to become a republic within the next ten years (actually can’t see it happening within the next fifty years) but once the older generation dies out support for that particular institution might well fall sharply.

My hairbrain idea would be for all of the CEOs of the various NHS Trusts to get together and be responsible for the NHS budget with no political pressure or influence from MPs. As well as this, they’ll be responsible for health policy and priorities in England. Obviously those CEOs will be accountable to their own doctors and nurses etc.

I would try and do the same with other departments as I’m not sure that a lot of MPs and Ministers are best for long termism.

Probably not feasible at all.

Rock paper scissors tactics.
at 10:11 18 Sep 2025

At my eldest football, instead of throwing a coin to determine who kickoffs etc, both captains had one round of rock, paper, scissors.

The opposition went with paper and won.

So, if the professional game introduced this and you were the captain, would you go with rock or paper or scissors?

I used to work in a NHS complaints team - to be fair the patients and the people complaining were in the main friendly. The doctors and nurses were the difficult ones - some seemed to think that admin staff were beneath them. But this was over twenty years ago whilst at uni so hopefully it’s a bit different there now.

A lot of the posts on this thread are said in jest - just hope that the ones being serious never called Mick a dinosaur because they seem to be stuck in the late 80s.

You’re trying far too hard - trolling should be casual effective art form. But this is far too clumsy.

I’ve never really paid that much attention to the Greens but after their new leader got ejected I had a look at their manifesto. Have to admit I do like their policies - if they are able to get their message across they could well win a lot more seats in Parliament.

Be interesting to see whether they are afforded the same exposure as hate preacher Farage has enjoyed from the BBC, ITV and Sky.

Could well be open to some form of gamesmanship- a team is under tremendous pressure with just one review left and not long on the clock. Stick a random incident up for review to break up play for a minute and use it to regroup.

Salary caps only work where that particular league had no real competition- for example the NFL or possibly the Rugby Union Premiership where it’s them or France. A salary cap in the PL will just see a lot of players go to other European leagues, the MLS or Saudi.

I’d imagine that football is quite a small world to move in with managers and players etc knowing quite a lot of other people in that community. Bit of a non-story really.

Off the pitch, I’ll abolish the 15:00 Saturday blackout and allow clubs to broadcast all of their home matches if they decide to do so. If a match is sold-out then fans in the immediate can watch on telly, but if it’s not sold out then only those over 50 miles away can watch. Not sure if this is possible.

On the pitch - stop the clock when the ball is out of play or when a player goes down injured. We might well have twenty mins of added time but so be it.

I’ll get rid of VAR but if a player is retrospectively punished for diving, violent conduct etc then that player can be liable to be banned for extra matches. If a player feigns injury and results in an opposition player being sent off for violent conduct, the red card is rescinded with the ban going to the other.

You’ve made-up the content in your second paragraph. If someone attends in support of a far right event, organised by a far right sympathiser, and with far right speakers then that person is a racist.
