Little Boats
at 14:36 23 Apr 2024

3 and a half years ago, and I think about those boats regularly. I hope they are prospering, living a peaceful happy life.

Search and Rescue by NewcyBlue 30 Sep 2020 17:21
At 1630GMT we received a call from a search and rescue aircraft, they had sighted small craft heading North towards the Canary Islands.

At the time I was 54m above sea level changing signal lights on the signal mast.

I was radioed and informed that I was needed on the bridge. The radars were started, which were turned off as I was up the signal mast.

After we were given the position of the boats we proceeded at full speed.

Approximately 36 minutes later we were in sight of two small boats. We called Las Palmas Marine Rescue Coordination Centre and informed them of what we had found. They told us that we should escort the boats North to the safety of a Spanish search and rescue vessel.

We were told that if necessary we may be required to rescue the persons on the boats.

As medical Officer I had preparations to make.

- The hospital was prepared
- First aid bag and oxygen was prepared
- Covid precautions for my crew was prepared
- A camera and notepad and pen was prepared.

I’m also in charge of life saving appliances such as life rafts and boats. I then proceeded to prepare

- The rescue boat, including inflatable life jackets for the rescue boat crew
- lifebuoys were stood by
- transponders for search and rescue that show up on the radar.
- Portable VHF radio for the rescue boat crew
- Additional lines that may be needed for towing the craft

After preparing this, I took two of my crew to lock the accommodation down, followed by all other accessible spaces on board.

The place was that we would keep the migrants in one place, we have to ensure the safety of the crew as well as the migrants. We also have to ensure the security of the vessel.

After doing a couple of meal reliefs to ensure other officers had some dinner, I went for some rest. There was nothing more that I could do.

We got the migrant boats to safety, in all there were four boats.

At 7 knots, and she’s drawing a draft of 12.2m, again my experience of these sized ships will give us about 75000 tonnes for something like that I reckon.

That’s a hell of force. 7 knots is about 8mph.

Heading up the Delaware river last month, one of the bridges was having strengthening and padding put round it.

Ships are getting bigger and bigger. Many countries have deep water ports closer to the coast, eg Felixstowe in the U.K., Yangshan in China.

Yes, although that’s mostly robberies. With the odd small tug or barge hijacked.

That’s always an interesting website.

Here is what happens when the lights go out…

Pandemonium - alarms going off all over the bridge. Every single piece of equipment sounds its own alarm.

If you panic at this moment, and start to try to quieten stuff down, you’re not going to notice that the rudder isn’t responding. We have a system called Non Follow Up that we can engage immediately to bring the rudder under control. The alarms are still going.

The pilots will be panicking, they know that if the crew don’t respond well that this is going to be a disaster. They will be making their own noise, adding to the aforementioned alarms. They may even get on the VHF radio and start asking for tugs to assist. The alarms are still going.

The Captain may even be calling the engine room on the phone. The alarms are still going, the engineers may be down in the belly of the beast trying to sort it out. But the phone is going, they have to run to the nearest phone now. It’s dark. The alarms are still going.

The emergency generator should have cut in.

The crew on the foc’sle will be seeing the dangers up ahead. They will use the UHF radio to contact the bridge to tell them. This will add to the noise. The alarms are still going.

Let’s say you acknowledge the alarms. The power is still off. The alarms come back.

The “black smoke” may not be black smoke. Certainly it could be from the generators on board rather than the main engine, or it may be from exhaust gas scrubbers if fitted.

Having seen AIS data, it appears the ship was doing 7 knots when it hit the bridge. My experience is that ships of that size don’t lose steering until 3 or 4 knots. My experience of that area is that there isn’t a massive tidal rate there either.

A friend of mine was on a container ship attacked by the Houthi after Christmas. What he said, and what was reported in the media was slightly different. He came to realise that he’s just a number, and his safety comes way down in the priority list compared to profits.

I’m going over to the private sector and have a job on a super yacht. I’ll be more of a skivvy, but it’s damned well paid and I won’t be a number to a multi billion dollar company.

Everyone talks about Somali pirates, the Captain Phillips film certainly brought attention of the issue to the world. It also wasn’t entirely accurate.

Nigerian pirates are worse than their Somali counterparts.

But the worst out there are the companies gambling profits on our lives.

Then we have this Baltimore incident. I dread to think what the loss of life will be, and I think it’s lucky that it happened at 0128hrs when traffic was certainly lighter.

Yes and no.

Losing engines whilst making a good speed isn’t so much of a problem IF you are quick enough to engage hand steering and keep her under control.

If you aren’t, you’re done for. The maritime community being a vast community is also rather small when it comes to incidents such as these.

Already there is chatter of a series of blackouts.

Having been in a situation of suffering a series of blackouts, I can tell you that it’s much nicer to happen when you have plenty of sea room.

In confined waters you need to take every available step to limit the damage to an inevitable situation.

Let’s not forget that in those waters it is also customary to employ the use of tugs.

This is another incident that shines a light on the maritime world, and I’m fairly certain that any root cause analysis will focus on the ship. Unfortunately there is a lot that goes on in the background ashore that causes issues on board.

It’s one of the reasons that I am soon to be changing from commercial shipping to another area in the sector.

Boro Roll Call
at 08:34 9 Dec 2023

How old is he now?

There’s loads of stuff around Newcastle. Discovery museum is good fun for the bairns, there’s something call Northumberlandia which is north, and is a good walk and a look out over a quarry.

The Metro Centre has a Lego shop which always goes down well with Seb.

North East Land Sea and Air Museum outside Sunderland is a decent couple of hours and they’ve got plenty to look at.

Town to win 4-0, having resolutely defended a 3-0 lead and scoring the 4th in the 93rd minute. Away end rocking.

Middlesbrough parking
at 17:43 4 Dec 2023

I was in Boro earlier, Zetland car park by the train station is £2.30 all day, including match days. This is just a couple of minutes from the A66.

Most car parks in Boro can be paid for using the RingGo app.

If going up by train, there are works to the train station going on, with one of the entrance/exits closed.

If coming up by car my advice is to take A1/M18/M62/A1/A19 there are major roadworks from Barnsdale Bar that cause a fair bit of delays!

Racked up a load of fines on a PCN and had no idea - any chance of an appeal?
at 17:41 3 Dec 2023

You can be fined up to £1000 for not updating name and address details on your logbook when they change.

Realistically you’ve probably got little chance. As someone else said earlier, a friendly worded letter apologising may be the best approach.

Good luck.

Migrant Breakfast Benefits

You think the boat thing isn’t a problem because you’ve been on a spacious ferry that will never sail over capacity. This barge is over capacity. It’s a safety issue.

It’s flagged under a flag of convenience. They could probably have trebled the capacity and the flag wouldn’t have been fussed.

Comparing a passenger ferry to a barge is ridiculous.

When you go from Harwich to Hook you do so on a vessel that has a very specific capacity for survival craft. Passenger numbers can NEVER exceed this number. Ever. It would be a massive problem if they did that.

It’s completely different from a barge that was built for a certain occupancy but then doubled overnight.

I see the barge is flagged under what is known as a flag of convenience.

When’s the new Metro going to be out and about?

We take the bairns for a walk via Tyne Dock metro most afternoons. They sometimes get a wave or a toot of the horn from the drivers.

Sunderland Roll Call…

If you’re taking the bairn Sitters, just down the road from the Premier Inn on Wessington Way is the North East Land Sea and Air Museum. It’s the classic car day on 6th August so a lot to see there. Well worth a visit.

South Shields has some of the best curry houses in the country. Particularly recommend Delhi 6.

House of Zen at Seaburn has decent scran too.

Sunday morning wor lass and the twins will be doing their weekly shop round the big Tesco near SoL. I’ll be heading across the Pacific from Los Angeles to Sydney.

New training kit on order, had to really!
