I would say we have a big problem on the right-hand side. Perhaps Ogbene will come back as the player he was before but even then I've never had him down as someone who would rip up the league, more a system player like Burns. As for Wes, we won't see him for a while yet and he'll be 31, we have to accept we've likely seen the best of him. Philogene can operate out there but jury is out on whether he can do so in the way we or he want. Johnson should be fine in the Champ at RB or a more conservative wing role but not further forwards. It's an utterly crucial part of our attack for which we don't currently have a good answer.

Need to get at least four or five more excellent players in before we can even think of another senior pro leaving.

I need to see that whoever we bring in really moves the dial, that's for sure. There are 10-12 teams in the Championship who can drop £8m on a nice player or two. We have lost a lot of what got us up the first time, both tangibles and crucial intangibles, and while evolution is natural it will take a humungous effort from McKenna to create something similarly formidable. I'm not saying he can't do it and reserve the right to be in full p7ss the league mode a month from now but I think we are in a for a bigger scrap than most people are quite ready for.

It's a lot. We have a mountain to climb and I think we can scale it but there is tonnes to do in very short order before I can put us among the automatic promotion contenders. People need to be ready for some difficulties ahead.

Offer in for Marcel Ruiz…
at 16:06 15 Jul 2025

The biggest risk for me would be the amount of football he's already played this year – a full Championship season on top of all that isn't viable, we'd need another top option in there too.

Hayden Hackney then...

This is all true but then there are intangibles nobody can ever predict. Who in their right mind could have thought two and a half years ago that Morsy and Luongo would form a midfield pair that steamroller the Championship? Not one person on the planet. Morsy was very interesting in what appears to have been his final presser – talking about the unseen stuff Luongo did, his timing and sheer intelligence, how those played to his own strengths. I'm not saying that we can't or won't replicate that in the year ahead but for me it's up in the air whoever we bring in.

Devastating blow, so gutted to lose Sam (n/t)

I agree. Half the Champ can sign a nice £8m midfielder or two. We have lost a lot of what dragged us over the line last time – Morsy, Luongo, Axel, Burgess, maybe Burns depending on the condition he eventually returns in. There is no evidence yet that the rest of our squad is able to do that. We will be ok eventually but I sense we are in for a rocky start.

Understand why this is happened but this is one hell of a high wire act from us now ahead of a season that will be relentless.

The thing is we'd need two very good players for that left side. I'm feeling very cautious re Ruiz because we are quite possibly a stalking horse for other suitors – but it's worth considering that the boy has not had a break since December and our supporters would be expecting him to come in and boss a full Championship season. Not gonna happen, he'd need immense care and meticulously managed minutes. He's already played 43 times this calendar year!

Dara O'Shea would more than happily have joined other clubs before us but presumably you'll be fine with him skippering us this season?

"On Monday" .. "On Tuesday" suggests today, although clarity isn't always the Athletic's strong point.

It's very standard practice to include them, the real question is when it expires and what the precise terms of that are.

Plenty of square pegs in round holes, yes, unless we get Ogbene and – later, because he is still months away – Burns back to Championship-winning levels of sharpness. We can't make do, I think we need another.

Yes, but it is likely to begin the process of publicly attempting to get Omari out.

Burns is 30 and coming back – not for some time yet, probably around his 31st birthday – from a big injury. We have a problem on that right hand side.

I agree with your overarching point – we've not seen a lot, so far, to confirm that these players can gel but we *do* know Omari is basically a cheat code to get out of the division. Lose him, which will very probably happen, and we badly need to find a bit of magic.

28 senior players now - so need to shift 3 to name the 25 man squad
at 09:32 14 Jul 2025

Which realistically means we'll be losing at least double that number by the end of the summer to get all the faces we want in, and I imagine that's a conservative estimate. Morsy, Broadhead and Hutchinson the obvious old favourites to go, which would remove a huge chunk of quality and experience.

Great to get a few signings done
at 22:20 13 Jul 2025

We really need to get the midfield right and I'm a little anxious about it, but on paper Matusiwa seems about as good an addition we could get in this particular role. Appears a good character too. High hopes. I expect we are going to need two more midfielders at least; let's hope some more additions come in soon.
