Help!! Tournament Advice
at 16:41 7 Jun 2018

Hey,

Looking for some advice.
I am setting up an inter club tournament at my club in pre season. Problem I have got is there are 7 teams and only one pitch available.
What would be the best tournament set up as 7 is an awkward number?

Ideas I have got are:
1. Two groups, one of 3 and one of 4, round robin in the group and then top two from each group go through to semi final and final. Problems with this is - you could potentially have a lot of time standing around. Also if you are the team in the group of 3 and that doesn't make the semi finals you won't get many minutes.
2. Straight knock out competition. One team gets automatic bye to semi final. Problem with this again is, the teams that get knocked out only play one game!
3. One big group of 7 teams. Everyone plays random 3 games, top two go through to a final. Problems - the 3 games you play are completely random and you may play the best three teams or the worst 3 teams.

Any ideas/ suggestions or thoughts on the above would be very helpful!

Yeah that is very true and I do agree that although they may do a good job it probably isn't the right appointment in the current situation for the club. I am just a bit biased at wanting someone that taught me so much about the game could potentially go on to become the manager of the team I support.

I would be very happy though if Mark Warburton was appointed.

They were both my PE teachers all the way through secondary school and not at one point was I coached to play long ball. Their philosophy was always to try and play 'neat and tidy football on the floor', win draw or lose, we were always told to keep trying to play this way. Obviously at school level the results didn't matter so they would always try to coach this method. The point being, this tells me that they are not all about long ball style of play. It is the fact that they can change their style dependant on what they are working with. The best attribute about both of them is there undeniable ability to get the best out of people and drive people far and past what you would expect them to be capable of. I think that has shown at all three clubs they have been at and it is a great attribute to have about you.
I fully believe the reason for them playing a more long ball type of game now is because it is what gets results at that level with the players they have available to them. I didn't watch much of Concord when they were there so I can't comment on that, but when they were at Braintree to start with they tried to play 'neat and tidy, on the floor football', but found that this wasn't as effective in gaining results as when they went more down the long ball path. Is that not just the smart thing to do? To get the best out of what resource is available?
If they come here and they may continue playing more longer ball stuff, but it would only be because they would see that as the best possible way of getting the best out of what is available, but I would be very surprised (if they came) if they did not at least try to play better, more entertaining football.
My view is obviously very biased, but I have also seen them in work at first hand, and I would definitely be happy if we took a risk with them, maybe they should be tried and tested at League One level first, but there aren't many options out there that can almost boast 100% record of over achieving every single season and as I say their ability to drive the best and beyond out of people, will only ever lead to success at any level.
