I get what you're saying and you're probably right. But at the same time if he'd just announced the recognition now, what would it achieved? If he can get something out of it, or at least make a point about the Israeli govt's behavior then isn't there more value in that? |

Interesting that Corbyn and Davy are both pissed off with the recognising of statehood being used as a bargaining chip. I'm not sure what else it could have ever been, given we don't run the world anymore. Maybe I'm taking pragmatism too far, but why not try to leverage what little power you have? |

The posts on this short thread already show the bind Starmer's in. I don't see how this rewards Hamas and they're already dug in, but equally, the deliberate starvation of 2m people can't go unchallenged. If you want to blame someone for this, blame the Isreali govt. |

You may be doing me too much justice with "semi-literate" - I'd say "vaguely interested now, after completely failing to understand economics at Uni 30 years ago". Thanks for the link - I will go and have a read in a moment, but could you put this argument (which I've seen you make too) into lay terms if poss please? It seems like you and thebooks think that there's no real limit to govt spending? Is that unfair? I'm glad your here on this thread, but please be gentle! Edit: i've started reading the link, but its a challenging read, which willt ake me time!) [Post edited 25 Jul 13:14]

"This is austerity logic, and based on a profound misunderstanding of how government finances work." Any chance of fleshing that out please? |

Has anyone got a figure for what meeting rhe drs'demands would cost? I seem to remember it being £1b, but that seems high. What ever it is, I wonder how much it would be to give porters, cleaners, admin and nurses the same increase? With an (extremely) limited governmental pot, I'd sooner see the less well off staff bumped up first. |

They probably should hold elections, given their principles - maybe they will even? Part of me welcomes this, even if it might let Reform in: the internal Labour bickering is too much to ignore now - perhaps it time to give (some) people what they want. |

Driving home from football, I caught the end of a long debate between the two candidates on iain Dale's LBC show. Apparently, there's no love lost between the two camps - seems like quite a choice the members have there. |

It would be interesting to know what the Israeli demands for a peace deal / surrender are and whether they're actually meetable (other than the release of the remaining hostages). |

Images like the one in your link seem to be more powerful than words. |
 | Forum Reply | Labour....ever feel like you've been cheated? at 11:56 23 Jul 2025
It may not be great, but I'd pay attention - a lot of people seem to feel this way. I do feel for Labour: they get it from the right for increased business taxes and apparent pressure that causes on jobs and growth. And then they get it from the left for trying to get a handle on ballooning spending commitments. I think this speaks of the state we find ourselves in , more than anything. |
