Anyone thinking of doing rhe Ashes?
at 08:40 16 Jun 2025

Did pencil it in this year but for similar reasons and a few heavy costs in my life of late we’ve decided to go another time.

Currently planning the far cheaper Sri Lanka white ball tour next January as a fortnight holiday.

Agreed and said the same to my wife at the time when watching it. Hounded him with repetitive questions. How the editor allowed that whole interview to be shown is beyond me too. I suspect they’ll be received a significant number of complaints for that.

Funnily enough - I contacted him after my last Pompeii trip to update him on a few changes at Pompeii train station and he thanked me and made the edits. So I suspect he relies on the millions of travellers that use his website.

I follow him on social media too and he's out and about quite a fair bit - interesting to follow.

Really weird qualifying fixtures
at 11:16 10 Jun 2025

I think its Nations League impact. And some play-off malarkey back in Spring. It meant that those teams with other fixtures to play were placed in smaller groups, whilst the larger groups played qualifiers in Spring.

European train travel

A few years ago I went all over Italy by train with my wife - wonderful way of seeing the country.

Part of our tour was Florence to Sorrento via Rome, Naples & Pompeii so I can vouch for it. The fast Frecciarossa trains are very comfortable and quick but you do pay a premium, not sure on OAP rates etc. I think there are slower, cheaper options like in the UK but would advise of trying to book onto a Frecciarossa if you can.

Rome to Naples is direct, regular and easy. From Naples it's a short walk to the station for the Circumvesuviana train - this is the most battered, graffiti hit little train you'll ever travel on but it runs a pretty route from Naples via Pompeii to Sorrento.

I've been to Pompeii twice and half a day was enough for me but others prefer visiting the area for a few days. We left Florence around 0800 and got to Pompeii around lunchtime from memory - spent 4/5 hours there then hopped back on the train onwards to Sorrento where we spent a fantastic few days. Highly recommend Sorrento if you've not been before - we also did a day trip to Capri. If you do opt to do something like this, Pompeii train station has luggage storage facilities upstairs that was handy.

Recommend checking it all out in more detail here if you need any insights: https://www.seat61.com/

Fans who clapped Vardy’s goal & clapped him off
at 10:39 19 May 2025

I clapped Chris Gayle when he scored his 10,000th run for the West Indies against England in a demolition. As did every others England cricket fan there that day. I appreciate there’s a slight difference in importance of a run vs a goal but I just don’t have any issues with recognising sporting achievements of others whilst still supporting my team.

I suppose I’m not a true fan though

Fully agree. Couldn't believe how unwilling he was to dish out any cards and you could see it meant Leicester players were taking more and more chances with their tackles. Could have been quite dangerous on another day.

And even the timewasting their side didn't get any real management.

I'm all for letting the game flow and keeping card volumes down but you've still got to keep players in check.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and own that I clapped his pitch departure and clapped when the 200 goals screen was up after his goal.

Each to their own and I respect everyone's opinion on this. I was as disappointed in the performance/outcome as anyone yesterday but in any other sport but football you'd likely clap those achievements. He has had a remarkable career at Leicester and I really rate his arrogance and gobby chav nature - its a dying breed of footballer and it adds to the game.

I said to my mate when I clapped along with a minority of others 'we'll be tarnished as the woke brigade for this' but I didn't want to let that affect my personal view on the matter. Each to their own but I try not to get too embroiled in the depth of feeling and anger in football if I can help it.

My family were also sat a row in front of his last summer on a flight to Bodrum and him and Rebekah couldn't have been nicer and more engaging with my 6 month old son when they could have just ignored us and put their headphones in. So I have personal reason to rate him is a bloke too.

Down votes incoming.

Does this Citeh fan have a valid point?

Yes this is my point. If we had to go to Villa Park or even the West Ham stadium for our first semi final in years and 10,000 Town fans missed out on tickets that could have gone if it was Wembley then I suspect we'd soon be hearing the other side of the argument from these people.

Haven't really got a strong view on this but do agree that many other big northern clubs who have experienced Wembley plenty like Liverpool and United would never leave a seat spare, I think it just sums up the Emptihad gags and having been there last year for their game v Villa there were tonnes of empty seats and half the fans were tourists with half and half scarves.

The bigger question for me is around the location of these semi finals. I keep seeing this discussion around them needing to be elsewhere in the country. But these matches take a lot of planning so I'm not sure how easy it would be to decide the location based upon the semi-final draw.

London is also the most accessible city for the majority - you can get one direct train there from most major football club towns/cities. There's the accommodation available too for fans. I know it can be expensive but I'm not sure it would have been much cheaper for Palace fans to travel to Old Trafford on Saturday.

The only thing I partly agree with is that an alternative London venue could be used for the semis to preserve Wembley for the final - such as Emirates, Spurs Stadium or Twickenham. But all of those would mean fewer tickets to fans and I am sure Forest, Palace and Villa fans weren't complaining about going to Wembley on the weekend.

Agreed. I hate sci fi but loved Last of Us season 1.

Episode 3 is one of my favourite episodes of TV I’ve seen in my life - the Nick Offerman episode which was effectively a standalone film separate to the main storyline. Stunning television.

I’m not sure but I do see lots of videos of the European away fans taking over The Old Wellington which has a sizeable outdoor space down by Exchange Square behind the Arndale Centre. So would be good to takeover somewhere like that - and they do a decent Guinness

Everyone's "non-league" team
at 16:21 24 Feb 2025

Made the decision around ten years to start following Leiston more closely when I noticed they played away games near me in London. They did really well to get to the play offs before losing to Dulwich Hamlet away in Tooting - 1-0 loss to a free kick despite holding their own against a side with far more resource.

They then moved to the Southern Central Premier and I follow their results and news every week but struggle to attend more than a couple of games a season as rarely back in Suffolk these days and so target the away games nearer to London such as Berkhamsted, Kings Langley etc.

Looking to get up to Biggleswade in a few weeks as we're flying recently and have shot from relegation fodder to the play-offs following a few months of ridiculous form. Brought back down to earth on Saturday with a loss at the well developed AFC Telford but still looking like we'll finish strong and have every chance of play-offs again, where we have been in and around in recent seasons.

All that being said, Needham have proved how tricky it is to go up to Conf North and Lowestoft have struggled up there too before, I believe.

Went back in 2018 and had a great boys trip.

We watched Ice Hockey on the Friday night (Stoczniowiec Gdańsk) and it was good fun, although if you have a sports fixture booked already you may not need that.

We also went to Sopot twice actually - once at night and it had a good nightlife. We also went during the day and the beach and pier there is lovely - we were fortunate that it was around 16 degrees in early October. I'd definitely suggest making sure you spend some sort of time in Sopot whatever you do.

Lowestoft Town FC 25/26 kit vote
at 09:33 24 Feb 2025

Leiston are my second team, but good to see both sides are blue home kit. Shame Leiston sport a yellow away kit.

Not sure of the balance at Leiston, I think the majority are anti both Ipswich & Norwich tbh! But a balance of Norwich & Ipswich links in the staff. Supporting them at a time when Darren Eadie was manager and the Jarvis brothers were playing was tricky....!

We take on Ipswich loanees though and took on Chris Casement recently.
