Vive la France!

I’m in the industry and I expect big changes this year. Sounds like we’ll hear more soon as government ‘bailout’ of the rail industry concludes in late May. Quite rightly we’re being told to be quite cost driven whilst customer comfort and interior focus is also being vocalised. Will be an interesting year.

Cricket news: No play at Headingley due to snow
at 21:11 10 Apr 2021

Doing the same for Surrey. Membership is £200 for all games and priority for members before full crowds. Used to go down there for county championship on a Tuesday afternoon with a few beers with a mate. Very pleasant in the sunshine.

Essex fan too but 2-3 hours travel to get there.

2021 Masters - Your Bets?
at 12:07 8 Apr 2021

I should add I have a good feeling about Niemann so tempted to back him late.

Spieth, Westwood, JT, DJ seem to be the hyped names going into this but the hype rarely delivers at the Masters (albeit DJ winning last November)

RIP.

He was fantastic in Chernobyl too - a real contrasting role to his FND role which showed his ability as an actor.

Footy Accumulators
at 11:42 29 Mar 2021

It's all a mugs game and the amount of gambling advertising in and around sport (and on social media) is sickening - I can't believe it is still allowed.

That being said, I generally put about £5-10 of accy bets on per week to liven up a midweek or weekend matchday as I see the scores come through.

I see it as paying £5-10 for a buzz of excitement in the build up to the games and to have me shouting at the TV as Salford almost equalise against Barrow. I treat it like paying £10 for a ticket to watch a film - I probably get more excitement from the accumulator sadly.

This is how it starts though.... (although I've been doing it for about 10 years and started with £2 a week so I've only increased a little)

Gorgeous day down here - hoping for a flowing game tomorrow as we seem most unstuck on lumpy pitches and at our best on carpets like the KCOM in Hull.

TWTD Glossary

Is Haribo still ever mentioned or am I wide of the mark with that one?

I only saw it in passing but it seemed quite a key topic at one point.

Mopeds home from northern away days?

Probably going off the topic of glossary now though.

Met police officer arrested in connection with missing Sarah Everard
at 11:44 12 Mar 2021

Yes, and my sister has shared it on social media. It's just further alienating the very people we're trying to have influenced.

And if anything it is just stoking the fire of the 'All lives matter' argument (or all should be free to walk at night, male or female). Which is just a further ignorant distraction from the actual problem.

Going to stick my neck out here and declare frustration at the theme I'm seeing on a lot of instagram stories challenging the 'why was she walking home?' and then subsequent entitled sounding response.

It makes it sound like half of society is asking that question when I've probably seen it on Twitter twice and here once, and it's often someone ignorant that clearly doesn't understand.

This notion going around that everyone (men in particular) are challenging the idea of women walking home at night is not the problem, it shouldn't be the focus. The same points can be made about reclaim the streets without the need to exaggerate the return challenge being vocalised.

The theme of my posts through this topic is we shouldn't be doing anything to alienate men from the problem - the conversation should hone in on the proactive improvements we can all make and influence. Suggesting that men are going around saying 'she shouldn't have walked home at that time' is encouraging response of 'well I don't think that so the rest of their argument is irrelevant to me'.

May be an odd thing for me to get worked up about but I just want to see the problem tackled in the most effective way.

I've re-read and noticed I've not really referenced sexual harrassment specifically which we're looking at in the context of women alone at night but arguably happens during the day too and in other contexts. I think this campaign helps highlight that too and it's slightly different to #MeToo as it's not about the rich and powerful but everyday men.

I think I'll be even more mindful to challenge that behaviour if I witness it.

I agree with what you're saying and understand that but sadly I think many men will think they're not creepy and won't adjust their behaviour from a few social media posts. This feels like the start of Black Lives Matter and we're already getting 'All Lives Matter' responses suggesting that everyone should be made to feel safe.

I think the campaign is a good thing but I also think we need to be careful not to link it to the Sarah Everard case too much as men will distance distance themselves - 'well I'm not like that'.

Therefore for greatest impact I think it's best run as a campaign without the extremes referenced too greatly as it's more likely to engage the necessary audience. I don't mind admitting that I've never proactively thought about my approach when walking at night. I've walked across Clapham Common at night past plenty of individual females and not once changed my behaviour. I've found this week a little eye opening in that regard and it's great that there are things that ALL men can actively to do make women feel more comfortable. All men should relate to those tips rather than the more dismissive of men seeing the social media posts and saying 'well I'm not like that so this is b*ll*cks'.

I do understand your point and agree this is a good debate, I suppose my point is ultimately separating the extremes and focusing on the everyday issues which we can all relate to will have greater impact.

I think the case with Sarah Everard should be separated from the wider sexual harrassment arguments going around at the moment as they're two different things.

One is a 'psychopath' as another member has said and is the complete extreme.

The other is just the general feeling of worry and discomfort that certain men can given women.

I feel like the campaign that is gathering pace this week about women walking alone without fear is a phoenix conversation that has branched out from the Sarah Everard case. As that case was not sexual harrassment, it was far worse and thankfully far more unique.

So in response to your post J2BLUE, I don't think the campaign is stop attacks, it's to allow women to walk with more confidence at night and not fear a creepy look, a brief stalker, a lewd comment etc. It's a campaign for men to help women feel safe through the tips I've previously shared and giving a wide berth etc.

Suspect arrested on suspicion of kidnap, murder and indecent exposure now.

I think it has been a while since we've had a case like this in fairness but as someone that doesn't live too far away it has really shocked me, my partner and local friends.

Yes - same mistakes time and time again.

Piers Morgan is probably hacking Sarah Everard's phone as we speak.
