January transfer window = improving the squad or improving the first eleven?

which part of 'you could make a case for him doing a lot more than just tinkering with the squad' was difficult to understand?

GIven that KMcK brought in Championship ready players in the last January window and that the performance against Leeds (and Fulham) show that we are nowhere near being good enough for the Prem then you could make a case for him doing a lot more than just tinkering with the squad.

It will certainly be needed in the summer if we do go up.

Innocent until proven guilty? Not anymore according to the Republicans
at 15:47 14 Dec 2023

It doesn't matter what one thinks of the Democrats at this particular juncture as their last two goes at impeaching Trump certainly seemed to be evidence based whereas there does not appear to be any evidence for what the Republicans are doing now.

Your comments are 'whataboutism' of the first order.

Why do we insist
at 20:15 25 Nov 2023

Yes, the system has been providing results so far but we do not seem to have a plan B for when other teams suss us out and boy, did West Brom suss us today. Much has been made of McKenna's in-game changes but Broadhead and Chaplin were anonymous in the first half (for that read 'well marked by WBA' not that they were poor) and thus could have, should have been substituted earlier just to change something. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.

The performance is more concerning than the result
at 20:05 25 Nov 2023

Unfortunately teams will look at this performance and go 'so that's how to do it' when they play us and the teams with the better players and better coaching will be able to repeat just what WBA have just done. Unfortunately there are quite a few that fit that category that we haven't played at their place yet.

Cue the downvotes.

Can't decide whether to give clarke a 4 or an 8

that would only happen if he was into ladies older than Wayne Rooney's preferences.

So that means one can only post a 'negative thread' when we've lost 4 on the bounce and the manager's head is on the block?

John F Kennedy said 'The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining' and I would suggest that pointing out deficiencies can be done at any time. There has been many threads recently about which players will do well when we get to the PL, unfortunately Clarke is currently not on that list.

I would beg to differ in Clarke's case as there were howls of outrage (and 100 downvotes which implied I hit raw nerves) when I started a thread entitled "Harry Clarke is not the answer - discuss" after the final match at Fleetwood. All of the points raised to support him were along the lines of:

- one of our own
- only 22
- McKenna sees something in him
- he does a fist pump (and therefore must be a good old boy)

The original OP was about whether he deserved a 4 or an 8 and some on here have correctly gone with 4 for defence and 8 for attack but others seem to still have blinkers on about his defensive capabilities.

The problem is that he has bags of potential but is not very good at defending at this point in time (and last season, watch him ball watching for the second goal against Fleetwood) but unfortunately we are not allowed to say that because he is:

- one of our own
- only 22
- McKenna obviously sees something in him
- does a fist pump

There would appear to be no room for those with vaild points of view to go against the orthodoxy of the ultra-Clarkeites.

Shh! You are not allowed to criticize one of our own! I said something similar a few weeks back and got 100 down-votes.

PS i'm not sure Brandon Williams is much better defensively either.

£75m - £100m! Not a chance unless we've been in the PL for years and years. Every time we have spent money on stands it ends in disaster.

I have to say I'm glad to have got to the 100 points mark as it does show what passion you all seem to have for someone I don't rate.

I'm a bit surprised that my lack of posting for 4 years makes my opinion invalid but then who in their right mind would post on here to get dog's abuse?

Yes, Clarke has the opportunity to be improved (note the passive use of 'improved') by the coaching staff but in IMHO (to which I am entitled but seem to be in a minority) he will be found out defensively next season by teams with better players and better coaches. As a result he will not be able to get forward as much and thus whatever service he provides for Burns (or his replacement) will be limited.

This will also reduce the 'fear' you all seem to think he engenders in opposing defences by running at them. I too was impressed on his debut by his athleticism, the fact that he plays with his head up, his desire to get forward etc. but his end product is lacking with too many misplaced passes both in the attacking third and out of defence.

I have nothing against the lad, I just don't get the hype.

PS I am not a budgie.

PPS I have no intention of posting 'I told you so' if / when he get replaced.

Well that went well!

i thought I would wait for the 'one of our own' storm to die out before commenting again.

Just so you know I have been supporting ITFC since the mid 60's and have seen a number of the 'one of our own' brigade fade and die with great regularity. Probably the first I recall being 'bigged' up was Robin Turner in 1975 ... whatever happened to him?

For those who don't know it the definition of a discussion is: talk or write about (a topic) in detail, taking into account different issues or ideas. It is not to lob gratuitous insults but then when have the members of this board ever been able to resist gratuitous insults.

Yes, Harry Clarke is athletic but that is a far as it goes for me. His positioning is suspect and he is unaware of what he is supposed to be doing (look at him ball-watching for Fleetwood's 2nd). I live abroad so watch most matches on Ifollow and the expression "an over-hit pass from Clarke" should be on repeat for the commentators. I am surprised that he has 75.9% passing accuracy according to The Athletic but is behind Burgess and Edmundson on that metric and they couldn't hit a barn door at the start of the season.

My biggest complaint is the lack of end product: he has precisely 1 assist for the season. He's a show pony, pure and simple.

Get over yourselves.

Defending: suspect.
Final pass: appalling.
Too impetuous.

Yes, he's one-of-our-own and likes a fist pump but that does not excuse his lack of quality.

PS JD wasn't much better.

Squad building for next season
at 17:02 3 May 2023

So, for instance if ITFC were to be offered £10m for a striker who has scored 29 goals (and counting) this year, do we think that Ashton is going to say 'No'? If we are looking at players who have added to their sales value over the course of the last 12 months then Chaplin is the most obvious.

Cue meltdown on here if that happens.
