football might be a business, with little loyalty, but it's also part of the game to get attached to players. they give us memories we can treasure (or wish to forget) which is why we all spend so much time on here talking about them. besides, nobody, whatever job they do, should be just be seen an employee. that's not human.
i liked darren currie - possibly the first town player to kiss the badge - but for me he summed up the joe royle era. good, entertaining but just not good enough to secure promotion. he had a wand of a left foot, and if he had an extra yard of pace (or any pace) he'd have been magnificent.
haha, fair play. van persie? no, but to stay on the arsenal front, timber is a good signing.
shopping in the eredivisie is risky, not just for the premiership. real madrid tried it a while back with sneijder, huntelaar, drenthe, robben and van der vaart, none of whom really succeeded there - but obviously robben and sneijder ripped it up elsewhere. spurs did better when prising eriksen, vertonghen and alderweireld, but i think it's noteworthy that none of the great ajax team from a while back (ziyech, de ligt, de jong, van der beek, onana) have ever really gone to greater things. maybe it's the system that makes the most of their talent? who knows.
as he just missed out on his 50th goal for us, i checked out his first goal for us against wednesday (the one where bonne nicked it from the keeper in injury time). i know it's been said a lot, but we've come so far in such a short time. the fact that so many of the same team are performing in the premier league is such a credit to mckenna and the players. proud.
yeah, i'll never forget that. his swing (and miss) seemed to take forever, as did the ball rolling into the net.
the pitch invasions for all their goals (and ours, to be fair) were also mental. the atmosphere was probably the most hostile i've been to. maybe it was spurred by all the 'free drinks if blues win' posters i spotted on the pubs near the ground...
was it really almost postponed? i remember our players from the time complaining in interviews that the pitch had been watered all day long before the game to make it hard for us to play on, but had no idea it was almost called off.
the only thing i 'enjoyed' about the incident, was martijn reuser saying in an interview after the game that after the dive he wished he could have taken back his vote for van nistelrooy as pfa player player of the year.
For all Liverpool and Barca's claims that it matters more, and they're 'more than a club', when you're raking in that much cash you're as corporate as they come. If they lowered ticket prices, or gave replica shirts away, then it might be a different matter...
